First Grand Theft Auto V gameplay trailer released

Grand Theft Auto V may be the most anticipated video game release of 2013 and today publisher Rockstar Games finally gave the public its first glimpse of actual gameplay from the open-world action game sequel with a new trailer.

The video, as posted on YouTube, shows how the game will interweave the three playable characters (Franklin, Trevor and Michael) into its single player mode. One of the sequences in the trailer shows Michael rappelling from a helicopter flown by Trevor. Michael is placed next to a high rise building and shoots out a window. At one point, the gameplay switches to the player controlling Franklin who shoots out some enemies from a sniper position in a nearby building.

The clip shows that the main focus of the single player game, in terms of missions, will be robberies, as the trio of characters team up to execute their plans. There's also tons of other things to do in GTA V, as the trailer shows that players can hunt wild animals, ride bicycles, play golf or tennis, go for a scuba dive, or even invest in stocks and real estate.

As expected, the gameplay world is vast and players will have the entire world to explore out of the box when they are not on missions. The trailer also offered up a brief preview of Grand Theft Online, the multiplayer portion of the game. GTA V is due out on September 17th for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

This footage is running on PS3 which is supposedly the lead platform. Sony seem to have worked out a lot of exclusive content with Rockstar so I think I may end up getting this version now.

Wow, that's the first time I've seen a video that says "Real in-game footage" that is actually real, in-game footage, not real, in-super-gaming-developer-pc footage.

Incredible. I think this is going to sell very well - and kudos to Rockstar for just having the vision to produce an open world title as incredible as this.

Some observations from watching the trailer:

When selecting Michael on the kidnapping helicopter scene, they show his stat bars for: Special, Stamina, Shooting, Stealth, Flying, Driving, Lung Capacity. ... Also note his picture on the selector shows "83 days".

After the bike ride with his son, the stat bars are shown, but this time they are in orange. Could this mean that the bike ride increased some of his stats?

The license plates say "San Andreas" on them.

The car shop in this clip is called "Los Santos Customs"

The car is showing stats levels too. Top Speed, Acceleration, Braking, Traction. And since it's showing up in the car customizer then I would assume you can tune out your car with the different parts so they arent cosmetic only.

The weapon select wheel shows 2 possible selections of the "Carbine Rifle", the second of which is chosen and it's listing "Extended Clip" and "Grip" which sounds like gun customizations as well. And you can carry more than one type of load out for a single weapon type.

The random ppl you hire for jobs are categorized and scored. Expertises shown are Driver, Gunman, and Hacker. They each have skill ratings as well for: Driving Skill, Composure, Vehicle Choice for the driver. Max Health, Accuracy, Shoot Rate, Weapon Choice for the Gunman and Sys Knowledge, Decryption Skill, Access Speed for the Hacker.

10 player dots were on the multi-player map.

yep, all this stuff has been detailed before though.

The License plate saying "San Andreas" is because Los Santos is a city in San Andreas state. The other two cities from GTA: San Andreas won't be in this game.

looks fun as hell as always, can't wait to stunt fly planes over the dam wall, under bridges and between buildings,it takes skills you know!

It look awesome ...lot more things to do , like the fact you can custom your car etc...but can you custom you house/unit/trailer ?

I'll buy it when there is a 'cook your own dinner' DLC pack, and not a moment sooner! If it has a spin off game of 'marinade madness' then hell, I'm buying two!

The only thing I'm left thinking after watching this.... Even with it being so DAMN good looking... is, I feel like they could have done SO much more with it being built for next gen systems.... Perhaps they should have just waited and made this a launch title for PS4 + Xbox 1....

They should have waited for next gen. I'm so burnt on this gen I can;t get myself to be excited for this especially when so many interesting next gen games are going to be released in Nov.

I was thinking the same thing... Its been delayed and talked about for so long... Could you imagine this being a launch day title for PS4 + Xbox 1 .... I feel like they could have done SO much more with it being built for next gen systems.

Same here, it looks stunning but the simple facts are the next gen consoles are capable of far more and potential has been wasted. A game like this with its huge openness is a real candidate for xbox ones cloud offloading shinanagins (someone call buzzword quick, I said cloud).

Still looks good though.

Here's a PC sale waiting...waiting

Perhaps you should do a fundraiser/kickstarter for them. The biggest problem with PC games is that they aren't profitable enough. Sure most of the time there is a profit but then the publisher points out that the same time could have been invested in making a new console game or DLC that would have given them a higher ROI.

I seriously can't fault any of it... just like the Last of Us, this is a serious contender for Game of the Year.

The Last Of Us is really good, but also overrated. It's a good shooter. Period.

We've had a lot of great games come out lately, between Naughty Dog knocking out home runs, Bioshock Infinite, Farcry 3 and now this...

It's a good time to be a gamer!

The Last of Us is far more than another generic shooter.

Best game I've played in years.

I actually wasn't a big fan of GTA IV, but this looks like a massive leap forward -- looking forward to it Kinda surprised they're not going to launch on next-gen consoles as well as the PS3 and 360.

Im willing to bet they will actually, sometime around February/March 2014. If you look closely theres no way current-gen consoles can produce the level of detail as seen in them trailers. Id say that gameplay footage was captured on a PS4 dev kit. Why do I say that? The video played in 1080p, and the game on the xbox and ps3 for GTA4 were 720p and something silly like 640p.
Anyway I guess we will see Either way, pre-ordered!

The video is in 720p...

It would be pretty terrible of Rockstar to capture & show the game from a next-gen system when they haven't even announced any kind of port.

But it looks pretty current-gen to me... really good current gen.

I concur. I'd be incredibly surprised if that was rendered in real-time on current generation consoles.

The footage is from the PS3 version of the game. If you play Max Payne 3, you will see the same flaws and graphics style. I'm sure that Rockstar will make a different GTA for next-gen...

Actually, if you squint your eyes it's in 4K.

LOL if you close your eyes does that make it the next thing after 4K?

Confirmed by Rockstar (First Comment) the video footage was from the PS3 version.

Thanks for that, though I remain sceptical based on previous pre-release footage put out by Rockstar. The most obvious point to make is that most of the footage is filmed cinematically, rather than using the in-game HUD. It's very different rendering a few scripted sequences to rendering the entire game world, particularly with an open world game like GTA5. A video like this also won't capture performance issues like framerate drops, object / texture pop-in, etc.

I much prefer it when developers show people actually playing the game rather than these heavily produced trailers. Rockstar has so far been unwilling to show off the gameplay, which to me is a warning sign.
