First Modern Warfare 3 gameplay trailer released

As promised earlier today, Activision has now released the first gameplay trailer for Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3. The latest game in the modern military first person shooter series is officially due to be released on November 8, according to the end of the trailer. It also confirms that the game is a collaboration between developers Infinity Ward, the Southern California studio who created the series, and Sledgehammer Games, the newest Activision in-house development studio based in Northern California.

The trailer which you can check out after the jump, shows a ton of spectacular action set pieces with locations like London, Paris, an unnamed city in Germany and New York City. That latter city in the game looks like it has been hit by a number of explosions that have reshaped the familiar Manhattan skyline.

Modern Warfare 3 certainly has a lot to live up to, at least in terms of the game's sales. The last game in the series, 2010's Call of Duty Black Ops (set mostly in the 1960s and developed by Treyarch) has now become the single best selling video-PC game of all time in the US with over 20 million copies sold. Modern Warfare 3 will also be the first Infinity Ward-developed game in the series that won't have the input of the studio's co-founders who were fired from their posts by Activision in March 2010. They and others from Infinity Ward have since regrouped and formed Respawn Entertainment and are working on their first game for publisher Electronic Arts.

Love how there are two companies behind it now. Guess Activision are admitting the Infinity Ward situation hit home more than they had liked.

Just get both, or neither! Either way no one cares about which is the best except children who think it's the end of the world if someone else doesn't like their favourite game. Grow up.

I personally think the game looks great and I have enjoyed all of the Call of Duty games, graphics are not everything and MW2 and Black Ops both look great IMO. Mind you BF3 looks amazing as well but I think it's just the look of CoD and there is no need to build/use a whole new engine when the current one look good IMO. I will be getting the game and I am sure 95% of the people here who are complaining about the game will too, same thing happened with BO and I think that game is better than MW2. Plus they still have 5 months before release, I'm sure there is still a bit of tweaking to do graphically...

Of course they have to try and compete with BF3, but this looks pretty decent to me.

I enjoyed MW1+2 and I'm currently playing Black Ops, so I await this games release as well.

this game makes the other games (like duke nukem, portal 2 and bink) looks like ****. Even with that old engine still rocking.

The game is not even finished and people already b!tch!ng about graphics, you should be happy activision keep sh!7ing out games for us every year.

No cover system = don't care. I finally got tired of the series with Black Ops. I couldn't even get through the first mission

Modern Warfare was awesome! Modern Warfare 2 was about the same level of awesomeness but a bit to samey. This looks like the Original and 2 mashed together (1 + 2 = 3) which seems to me the exact equation they did to make this third instalment and you just know the MP will be the same, 5 new maps and 10 rehashed old ones yay!

I did enjoy the first two modern warfare games and I will probably enjoy this one but something a bit different would be VERY much welcome!

Is the trend in MW3 to invade only countries that have an "e" in them, just so they can change it to a "3"? If that's the case, Audioboxer's safe up in Scotland.

I, on the other hand, in jolly old 3ngland, am f**ked.

Hating Call of Duty is the new way to be hip... "Oh I'm not mainstream... Bobby Kotick is Lame... Activision is Lame... <insert lame FPS Name> is soooo much better than COD"
No one cares, don't like it... Don't buy it. Millions of others still will, and I'll be on xbox live to shoot them all up

Some people don't like CoD, I know its hard to understand that because so many people do (for some reason) but a few people get annoyed when a company rehashes the same old stuff for £40 ..... again!

Whatever... I don't like a bunch of games, but I don't make it my Duty to go on every topic where they talk about those games to buzzkill ! My room mates get soooo pumped for the Fifa and Pro-Evolution Soccer series ! I just let them do them (as long as they don't play my COD to **** up my stats )

Plus what's £40, people seem to forget that gaming is a luxury... Can't pay ? Don't play... Or wait and get it on Ebay !

I'm not entirely impressed but I'll admit, the trailer showed a lot of action. It sort of reminds me of the Call of Duty 4 campaign. Unfortunately, it looks like they're using the Modern Warfare 2 engine.

Anyway, I sold the X360 version of Black Ops after getting over 30k kills and reaching a K/D ratio of 1.96. I hope I won't have to do the same with Modern Warfare 3. I'll definitely buy it if the multiplayer is well-balanced. After all, I'll need a game to play on the X360.

Fashionable to bash COD now. BF3 maybe better but I,ll still get COD. Seriously people why cant we appreciate each games strengths and weakness , and just enjoy them.

Omg no D10/11/12/13 whatever, just enjoy the storys and dare I say it gameplay.

The story??? Not sure what magically COD games that you are talking about but the story in these games is complete garbage.

As for no updated DX. That is a HUGE issues for PC gamers. Activision is stuck in console mode and refuses to update their crap to take advantage of even entry level video cards. It's pathetic that the lemmings keep rewarding them with millions of dollars in sales.

Even with a bad story, I'm down for an entertaining singleplayer. What I DON'T like is beating the game in 5 hours. Seriously, at $60, that's all they could make? Pfffft...

Why are these megacities only in Europe and North America? Is the rest of the world too boring or exotic for MW? It looks nice, but I'm tired of the same old general locales.

Looks like a POOR copy of BF3.....The graphics look crap IMO

Won't be getting for our PC's, PS3 or Xbox.....

BF3 > ALL COD's now and into the future

I might get it on the X360. As for PC, well... let's just say I'm building a new PC for a certain first-person shooter with big, open battlefields.

And that game would be? I'm curious.

Hopefully MW3 gets a more better story than the last one. The first MW had a good story and the SP campaign was really great with all those locations and the sniper "flashback" was awesome.

Battlefield 3.

Not a fan of the MW series (after the uber crappy MW2) , but i feel that in spite of all its shortcomings this game will again break all records.

Talk about good luck (Activision seems to have loads of it)

Oh, BTW I think the SP in this game is gonna suck (as much as MW2).

Wow so this is like the 5th same game in a row for Activision, yet people will STILL go and and buy this rubbish. I'm not falling for their trap again.

MW1, 2, BO = same engine & gameplay.

It's just like WoW with more expansions to it.

BF:BC2 still beating MW2 or BO, there is no need for EA to release another game to compete with BO/

BF3 vs MW3 (maybe BO 2 in 2012's November?) = BF3 wins

What I've gathered from this nonsense is that you think CoD aren't the top games right now.

Xbox 360 Top LIVE Titles (based on UU's)
1 Call of Duty: Black Ops
2 Modern Warfare 2
...
8 Call of Duty 4
9 Battlefield: Bad Co. 2

Honestly, the plastic feel to everything in BC2 killed it for me. Controls were stiff and movement was clunky. I loved the destructible environments, realistic weapon physics, and large maps, but that was really it. MW2 looks and feels clean while playing, even with small maps and uneven game play. BF3 however looks promising in all areas mentioned. Dice really stepped it up a notch on graphics, and I can only hope the movement/looking controls are more sensitive or mappable.

Not only were the controls horrible but the gameplay in MP was just so effing slow

Crysis 1 is very playable on today's rigs. Well worth the time and it's very nicely sale priced these days.

Story? It has been confusing and annoying rubbish for every Modern Warfare game. And the gameplay isn't much better with the constant bloody screen and shooting requiring little aiming skills.

Digitalx said,
gameplay story graphics everything is meh and average. nothing new nothing different. pass.

It takes years to make a new engine, look at how long we've had to wait just to get Frostbite 2 in BF3. Look how long it took to make the new Doom engine, or now with Rage and ID Tech5. Games that come out each year won't be getting a new engine anytime soon, that's just the simple fact of it. You need more time to do something of that scale, which often means starting from scratch. I think, though I could be wrong, that Frostbite 2 doesn't have much incommon with frostbite 1, code wise that is.

The best a game series like this can give you for now is minor touchups, but that's it.

Just saw the trailer on TV during the Boston Bruins vs Tampa Bay Lightning game. Was surprised to see this trailer on TV. I guess Activision & Infinity Ward are going all out to market this game. Looks pretty sweet I gotta say. I loved the single player of MW and MW2.

This game couldn't look any more dated.

It looks the same, and I'm positive it'll play the same as every single Call of Duty game before it since Modern Warfare 1.

Which COD hasn't had in quite some time... Also, its not like this trailer really even showed off any gameplay.

They are equally important to me. And CoD has lacked both in the last two games.

SCRISP said,

+1 Its all about gameplay. I guess they're seriously involved in gameplay/story design which left out the graphic aspect lol.

Well, if that's the case, I'm not expecting much in gameplay. Incessant SP spawning of enemies = turn off

Well hasn't that been there since the start of CoD? It's not like it's new. Though I agree, I hate how it'll just keep pumping them out until you move up to the next checkpoint or something.

Well, the infinite spawns aren't everywhere, just at points where it makes sense. Ya know, the people charging up the hill in Vietnam during Black Ops, or the guys streaming after you at the Estate in MW2... (never really understood how all the people shooting at you just suddenly disappeared once you reached Shepard)

The campaign for all Call of Duty games have always been great. The graphics have always remained the same, though. This right here, looks identical to Modern Warfare 2...

I thought the campaigns were good, but the only thing is.. I don't want to play the same exact game over and over and over and over and over again. Are they actually adjusting any of the gameplay or tweaking it or ANYTHING? I can't keep continuously playing these games. I'm not going to purchase another COD ever again if all they can do is rehash + add more explosions.

I remember the jump from COD1 to 2 and loved it, and I felt the same when they hit MW, but then they just kept giving us the same exact game so I probably won't ever feel that again.

Dude its Activision. Since when do they improve games before pumping them out yearly?

CoD4 was THE game of the series, where it practically changed the norm on FPS games entirely. Everything since then has been a rehash of CoD4, with minor improvements.

The engine does not look updated not one bit. Even though I remember reading they left the previous engine.

I wish they would have fixed the problems with Black Ops. The sound lag issue, the performance issues, just crazy.

I can play MW2 on highest settings, highest resolution, with an insane frame rate. But BlackOps chugs with less that 60fps no matter what settings you change and what resolution you drop down to, with the same uber rig.

Just the weakest of sauce...

Explore said,

You won't see a updated engine for CoD games till the next generation of consoles, that's their bigger market now compared to PC, we just have to live with that fact.

So how long can they get away with making the same game? Looks like there's some nice cinematic moments in the campaign, but overall looks like they are rehashing the same game again.

As long as people don't get tired of running around shooting things it'll never end. The thing is that most are just fine with new maps as far as MP goes, they just want to go online a kill people.

rrode74 said,
Wow correct me if I am wrong, but Battlefield 3 which announced first with the same basic plot.....seriously WTF?

I didn't think we had been told what the "story" was for BF3? I know it has MP maps across the same countries though.

And it doesn't matter which was announced first, they don't suddenly create a whole game around a similar plot over night just to copy BF3, everything going on was somewhat laid out in the previous instalments of the MW line of games, "WW3" as it were is always something most modern shooters either delve into or take place afterwards.

zeta_immersion said,
I played the first 2 but never understood the story line

CoD4: Secret task force of soldiers try to counter some terrorists that aim to blow up the world. Kill the leader at the end, happy days.
MW2: In killing that last guy, you opened up a position for some new ******* to step in. Decides to blow up the world, by pitting USA vs. Russia. You become a scapegoat for your leader as a means to use nukes on Russia. You kill your own boss, going rogue with the truth that the U.S. never did start everything off by killing civilians like the Russians think.
MW3: Well, the world is in a jolly old state right now, what with Russia having invaded the US, and the US all ****ed at Russia. I'm guessing now everybody else gets dragged into this, and it's just another World War, where you get to save the world from being completely destroyed. I do anticipate some nuking though.

Yeah... the BF3 gameplay video blew me away constantly, some parts I didn't even believe were gameplay. This is ... quite disappointing.
