Former Groupon CEO making a “business music album”

Is this what Andrew Mason looked like while recording?

There’s no question that former Groupon CEO Andrew Mason knows a thing or two about business. He built up the hugely popular “deal of the day” site from a concept to a multi-billion dollar company before being ousted earlier this year. So what’s Mason going to do now?

According to his personal blog, he’s going to record an album. Unlike a traditional music album, this one is going to focus on giving business advice to the younger generation. While working at Groupon he realized that the new hires had practically no understanding of how business worked and weren’t interested in reading books on the subject. Mason says there is a “real need to present business wisdom in a format that is more accessible to the younger generation.”

We can’t help but wonder if this is a good idea or whether it’s another example of the dumbing down of the world. While high level concepts can probably be explored, how much useful information can you pack into seven songs?

The album, entitled Hardly Workin’ is expected to be available on iTunes in the next few weeks.
