I don't know if this is just people playing multiplayer specifically... Doesn't Xbox Live count the time when you're signed in even if you're just playing a single player game or watching netflix or whatever?

You mean actually talking to people?

Thats a whole lot of time performing actions that have no relevance in the real world.

Still whatever gets you through the day, if it wasn't Xbox it would be TV, alcohol, gambling, we all have something.

Actually I think playing Call Of Duty makes me a better person.

Interestingly enough I do all of those things you listed. I also read, bike ride, work full time taking care of people with mental disorders, and have a decent social life. Funny, how I can manage all of that.

I think that "4 billion hours" is a little dubious. It would take 30 million people playing 24/7 over 15 years to get there.

edit - ah, my bad - I was using the (proper) British billion in my calculations. Using the (ugh) American version makes it a little more believable.

More like four billion hours of wasted time. Four billion hours' worth of reading, exercise, outdoor activity, or actual human interaction would be an achievement.

People have been doing that for thousands of years. Quit living in the past.

Life is about achieving happiness. If you're happy when you're getting entertained playing Xbox then it's not wasted time.

Or 4 billion hours of research into worthwhile sciences... that would benefit humanity a LOT.

Exactly

You act like the people playing xbox aren't doing those things.

I mean, you do understand that playing Xbox is entertainment, just like watching a movie or reading a book. And I'd assume, for most people, comes second to an actual life; work/school, social engagements, etc...

It's not wasted time, it's spare time or free time.

So how much have they earn't through selling xbox live?

Well if you take it for $50 for a year of live being 24hrs x 365 days and then divide 4,000,000,000 by that number, its $22,831,050.22 worth of live, but thats not a definite way to calculate it.
