PlayStation 2 nears broadband phase

A story on Asia Biz Tech today suggests that Sony's Playstation 2 shipped nearly five million units in Q3 of 2001, and certainly more than five million in Q4.
And it also suggests that Sony is well on the way to building broadband access into the boxes, giving it a lead over Microsoft's X-Box and the Nintendo Gamecube.

At the end of last year, the piece says, Sony made some strong alliances with broadband players and to us this suggests a recent visit to Asia by a senior Microsoft suit means that firm is scrabbling round to compete on that level.

Sony's SCE subsidiary has deals with Sun, Macromedia, Realnetworks and a number of other players too, the article says.

Linux is a popular Unix derivative developed in 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Like Windows, Linux runs on Intel-based PCs, but uses a different licensing mechanism. While Microsoft controls the source code to Windows and charges a fee for every copy sold on PCs, Linux uses an "open source" model, where companies also have the right to install as many copies of the operating system as they wish.

On the surface, competing with Microsoft in the operating system market would seem to make sense, especially as AOL Time Warner increasingly knocks heads with the software giant in the market for Web services leveraged off the desktop.

Gartner predicts that next year 80 percent of companies developing platform software, such as operating systems, will support Web services architectures.

But Linux, which has some traction in the server market has negligible share on the desktop, making the acquisition of a company like Red Hat a potentially long-term losing strategy, analysts warn.

"Linux in the desktop market in the U.S. is basically a non-starter," said Chris LeTocq, industry strategist with Sage Circle. "The applications in the U.S. tend to be apart from servers tend to be OEM set-top boxes. For desktop or set-box use in the U.S., it makes more sense to get an OEM license. There's no need to purchase a company that's in the distribution services business."

Outside the United States is "another story," LeTocq said.

A Linux OS and online service package could be sold for much less than Windows because of the licensing model, also leveraging AOL's monthly billing model.

"A desktop vendor in Latin America or especially China, if they can save 50 to 60 bucks on a PC that's a big deal," LeTocq said. "It's conceivable that a Linux alliance with a media company could work in that environment."

Knocking heads
The merger rumors come as competition intensifies between AOL Time Warner and Microsoft. Earlier this month, for example, the media conglomerate responded to Microsoft's .Net Alerts service by launching AOL Alerts. Both services use instant messaging to deliver customized stock quotes, auction updates or other information to computers, handhelds and cell phones, among other devices.

The companies started knocking heads openly last summer, when negotiations collapsed to include a version of AOL software with Windows XP. AOL Time Warner responded by cutting separate deals with PC makers that ensured desktop placement alongside Microsoft's MSN.

While the AOL service has grown its subscriber base, MSN continues to add members more slowly. AOL subscribers swelled from 9 million in autumn1997 to 33 million at the beginning of this year. In December alone, AOL gained 1.9 million new subscribers, the company said. MSN, by contrast, foundered for years, going from 2.5 million subscribers in 1997 to 7.7 million in December.

But the AOL service is largely dependent on Windows, where Microsoft increasingly leverages its monopoly operating system against AOL Time Warner.

Windows XP, for example, has multiple hooks--messaging, media playback, online authentication and photo processing, among others--that tie back to MSN.

"Microsoft has a clear advantage with Windows XP and driving traffic to MSN," said Gartner analyst Michael Silver. "It's the foundation for their Web services strategy."

In the future, Microsoft plans to offer paid services through its MSN Web site, some which are expected to require use of the online service component. Like AOL, Microsoft already charges a monthly fee for MSN online access, something it is expected to do with MSN Web services leveraged off the desktop.

From this perspective, AOL Time Warner could benefit from a Linux deal, particularly as Microsoft sees some real gains from its desktop-tied-to-the-Web strategy.

Internet Explorer, which is integrated into Windows XP and available separately for older Microsoft operating systems is a good example. Internet Explorer 6 replaces the more typical "page not found" with an MSN search page. That tactic helped Microsoft claim that MSN had beat out Yahoo for Internet searches during November.

But Market researcher Jupiter Media Metrix, which tabulated the data, concluded the "page not found" redirections accounted for about half of the MSN searches. MSN search pages led Yahoo in November, 36.6 million to 31.9 million visitors, according to Media Metrix.

"If you look at how much traffic the auto-search redirection generated from MSN, it's almost 50 percent," said Media Metrix analyst Michael Gartenberg. "That's a huge number they essentially picked up for free by being the default."

Whether AOL is looking at Linux or not, the company must find away to neutralize Microsoft's desktop advantage, say analysts

"As long as Microsoft can drive services off the desktop, they're going to have an advantage over AOL," Silver said.

What I do not understand is this: "... Sony is well on the way to building broadband access into the boxes, giving it a lead over Microsoft's X-Box..." Huh? X-Box has a broadband (Ethernet) port. How are people playing online now if it did not have it??

i have been a pc gamer for a while, got a nice rig, 933MHZ RAID 0, 512 MB Ram and a 64MB Geforce 2 GTS Pro. there are better machines, sure, but this is no slouch. just got an xbox last night. whooaaaa!!!! going to be a while before i buy a pc game! there are pc games that rock and there are console games that rock. it's all good. but i will say this - if i had $2500 to spend on gaming, a new HDTV and an XBOX would be a gaming experience that would be hard to beat. and slouching back in your lazyboy beats being hunched over a keyboard anyday.

#7 - my point was not that PS2 can not do it now; it was that there is no "edge over XBox" in here.
#10 Kamuii on 23 Jan 2002 - 00:00
Actually, #9, Sony does have an edge over Microsoft. While Microsoft has the capability to test its networks here in the US, Sony has dual markets and dual testing arenas, with much more support than MS does. Just because Xbox has a built in Ethernet port doesn't mean that Xbox is automatically ahead.

lol u r funny .Microsoft is every where and u believe sony still has an advantage over it. People already play Online on the X box with gamespy arcade where as PS2 is only online in Japan.

sony rocks
#13 g on 23 Jan 2002 - 15:43
what's this ps 3 talk lately, by the way? could it be that sony knows it better hussle and come out with a console that can give the xbox a run for it's money? the games for xbox are still the first generation games, and they dominate the current seasoned ps 2 games. don't get me wrong... it's all good. ...but some are better ;]
#14 RiPPn on 23 Jan 2002 - 16:41
I hope the PS3 isn't as rushed as the PS2. The PS2 is a technical nightmare. I don't understand how the PS2 is still selling it is the inferior of the 3 consoles out there. And if the PS3 is not backward compatable PS2/Sony fans should feel like they got the "big Stiffy." Microsoft has the better product, I just wish the people could get past the hateration, suck it up and buy the better product. Nintendo and Microsoft are the future!

the reason i despise the xbox so much is because of the massive controllers! Thus, PS2 is superior just my 2 cents...
#17 RiPPn on 23 Jan 2002 - 23:00
They have a converter that allows you to use a playstation controller with the X-Box, you no longer have a reason to despise the X-Box, so go buy one.
#18 Divide Overflow on 24 Jan 2002 - 00:17
You have converters out there that pretty much allow you to use almost any controller on any console/PC. One really popular combo is the Sony Dual Shock on a PC. You just have to find them - they're usually manufactured by a Chinese or Taiwanese company. For instance: http://www.xinga.com.cn/

Xbox and Gamecube are great systems, i'm not going to deny that. I just think that the PS2 has the better games, controller, and other goodies. I don't think its a good idea to go broadband with the PS2. Online gaming was made for ONE system. PC's. Enough said.
#22 Squishy on 25 Jan 2002 - 22:21
Sony-slackers...... Even though the Xbox online service is not up yet, you can still play online already if you have a PC. Real easy: Download GameSpy arcade, and GameSpy tunnel. The tunnel connects you to countless rooms where you can play Halo, Tony Hawk, and Nascar. I just tried it out last night, and it works like a charm with Halo (I dont have the other games). Beat that Sony pigs. But the thing I can't wait for Xbox online, is the Xbox communicator: a headset so you can say commands (duck, shoot etc.) as well as taunt other players and more!!!! my 2-bits

okay...all u pc and xbox lovers.....would u all shut up about the crappy pc and xbox hardware capabilities...okay because that IS NOT AN ARGUEMENT!!!! GOD! its more fun playing a game of pong than most (if not all) of the extreme high def xbox and pc games. (though i give props to HALO and a few other SICK games on the xbo but at the end of the day, ps2 wipes the floor with gamecube (for nine year olds) xbox (for computer nerds just looking for the fastest machine so that they can tell their friends...wait, nerds dont have friends) and pc gamers (who spend hours playing queer ass games over the internet with other child molesters and perves). When all is said and done, ps2, with twisted metal black, grand theft auto 3, madden 2002, mlb 2002, ssx tricky, and metal gear solid 2. all these games KILL ne competition so would u all just shut up about the 733 mghtz processor in the x box.....and pick up a game like twisted metal and have some real fun....u nerds mite make a few friends tooo....but dont count on it. PLAYSTATION 4eva!
#26 JD on 26 Jan 2002 - 21:39
oh and by the way...if ne of u nerds use the arguements that the XBOX has good games 2, i just have 1 thing to say: GRAND THEFT AUTO 3...ps2 gamers will have beaten, played osessivly, and moved on by the time it comes to xbox or pc in.....whaaaahahahahaha....3 months....keep on waiting NERDS.
#27 JD on 26 Jan 2002 - 21:47
Ohhh and to all u pcgamers....i hope u all waste ur lives alone in a dark room with no friends and a moniter playing obsessivly QUAKE over the internet...we ps2 gamers will be havin fun partisipation in GROUP activities like Madden 2002....try playing that on the pc...it shits the bed....and i've got an ass kicking pc, p4 1.6 1gig of RAM ATI 8500 all-in-wonder, windows xp, and a sick sound system. how do i make my money, being 15yr old? building computers for pc gaming nerds like U!!!!....keep ong playing and paying nerds.....wahhhahahaha!!!

JD you sound like the most unintelligent shit stain to ever crawl out of a toilet. You must be some 15 year old queer who hasn't come out of the closet because he's afraid of what his parents will think. You certainly act that way. Do us all a favor and shut the hell up. Now for my comment: I find it interesting they say that broadband will give the ps2 a leg up on the xbox when the xbox already has working broadband (as stated above). Someone didn't do their homework (and I'm not talking about JD here)
