There’s no ignoring Doom III

MSNBC discusses the latest ID creation Doom III and has an interview with John Carmack.

Nothing at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) prepared spectators for Doom III, the latest first-person perspective shooter from id Software. The jump from Quake III to Doom III is no incremental jump; it is a revolution.

Doom III was shown in a small theater located at the back of the Activision booth. Huge lines formed behind the booth. People complained about having to wait as long as two hours to see the brief demonstration; but wait they did.
Doom III was worth the wait. Judging by the quality of the graphics on the screen, the sheer intelligence of its monsters, or the fear factor it creates, Doom III sets new standards for gaming.

“You’re not going to know where there is a safe piece of a wall. If you backed up to a certain kind of wall in the old games, you knew that nothing was going to happen because the wall was obviously part of the environment. That level of security is not going to be there with Doom III because the entire world can change and you will not be in command of your environment.”

“I told everyone that I was going to demonstrate Doom III on the best hardware, and there has been no collusion or kickbacks or anything like that going on. Our objective is the technical merit.”
“The new ATI card was clearly superior. I don’t want to ding NVidia for anything because NVidia has done everything they possibly could; but in every test we ran, ATI was faster.”

Wish he had mentioned models. Is he saying that the Radeon 8500 was faster than the GF4 Ti4600? Wow. (I'm an moderate Nvidia fanboy, but good for ATI).

It's a yet to be released chip by Ati (code name: R300)
in every test we ran, ATI was faster.
heyhey...

Yea, on a card that is not even released yet! Come on!!! in every test we ran, ATI was faster. Obviously, it's going to be, it's a bleedin new chip, not even available to purchase! When Doom III is released, those hardcore gamers out there, who have just recently just upgraded their systems to the current king of the heap, ARE not going to stump up more $$$ for a new card, just to see their investment go down the toilet to a piece of graphic hardware that has not even made it into production. Yes, I know Doom III is going to push the gaming envelope, gamewise, and graphics, and I see what you are trying to do JC, show the game on the best hardware available, well stick to your statement JC, and use CURRENTLY AVAILABLE hardware, not a piece of hardware that is due for release. Granted, show off ATI's new chipset, BUT demo the game on stuff you can get your hands on now, admittidly expensive hardware, but none the less, it's available to BUY NOW.

The good thing about JC saying ATi's next chip is faster than a GF4, is that now nVidia will be pulling out the stops to make NV30 even better before it's autumn release, knowing what ATi have done. He knows nVidia drivers own, and has gone on record saying that nVidia drivers are his gold standard. This interview will simply encourage more competition from both sides, which is all good for consumers. There was a press release from ATi posted at nvnews the other day saying that their new chip was being used for the E3 demo.

i've always liked the way ATI cards look. They have a good focus on quality of image, where NVidia seems to concentrate on speed. My choice is with quality, so I may be getting an ATI card next...

How do you guys know that JC was comparing the R300 to the GF4? He might have been comparing it to an NV30 sample, as nVidia would have probably tried to get their new chip in for the showing instead of the R300. Just a thought........ Priesh

It's the same gimmick as ever anyway: you want to get the best out of this brand new game? you'll have to buy this new hardware, which the game has been optimized for. Wise up kids! When it is not like this, it is the other way around: if you want to use this new piece of hardware working without shmock, better get the new versions of this software (and pay for full version - or upgrades that cost almost the same). Think about it. You are material boys/girls and this is a seller's world. You really think your money is worth it?

Here: This is an email from John Carmack. it should clear up what he meant. It [The ATI card used] was compared against a very high speed GF4. It shouldn't be surprising that a next-generation card is faster than a current generation card. What will be very interesting is comparing the next gen cards (and the supporting drivers) from both vendors head to head when they are both in production. Everyone working on DOOM still uses GF4-Ti cards at the moment, and if someone needs to buy a new video card today, that is what I tell them to get. John Carmack

I think this game is going to rule! Leave it up to id software to make a game that forces me to completely upgrade my computer (again). I can't help it. The devil made me do it

I think the raine d00d is on about the Geforce 4 MX cards? As not even the dullest star in the sky thinks that a Geforce3 is better than a Geforce 4 Ti-
#12 Jstphish on 30 May 2002 - 00:16
Nooo... The GF4MX sucks. The GF4Ti is much faster than the GF3
#13 Redmak on 30 May 2002 - 11:03
Well, I love my gf4 mx (for only 95 euros). Doom III won't run with max settings on my PIII-866 anyway, no matter what vid card I buy.
#14 Rathamon on 30 May 2002 - 18:09
well maybe they should have previewed it twice , once on a next generation spec machine and once on something more humble (still high powered tho) like an Athlon XP 1700+ with a GF3 Ti200 since this is probably what most gamers will have when the game is released
