Thanks BaphomeT for this one.. Here is something to scare a few people today who managed to see the DOOM3 E3 demo this year. An email from John Carmack which clarifies that the demo was in fact running for certain running on 'next-gen' hardware from ATI and not the Radeon 8500 also mentions this:
We actually screwed up at E3 -- we should have been running it at high quality settings (uncompressed textures, anisotropic filtering), but we were chasing some problems the first day, and it got set back to medium quality. The problems had gone away, so we left it that way, rather than risk changing it back.
Yup, DOOM was only running at medium quality, it gets even purtier. In addition, Wired has an audio interview with Carmack and Trent Reznor.

The next-gen ATI stuff was being compared to a juiced up GF4 card (Probably what would be called a GeForce4-Ultra) by Carmack. Calling that NVidia's next-gen stuff was a bit of a misnomer. Oops?

MSN Communities is committed to your satisfaction, and we are always looking for ways to improve our service. We’ve listened to you, and as a result of your feedback, here’s what we have planned for our summer 2002 release.

We're changing our name!
MSN Communities will become MSN Groups this summer. Groups more accurately conveys what we're all about—people with similar interests building a group around those interests. In addition, "Groups" is rapidly becoming the standard term for this type of service. "Groups" is simpler, more precise, and a lot easier to type.
What do I need to do?
Nothing. The change will create a new Web address (http://groups.msn.com) for our service, but the old URL will continue to work for at least six months. Links on any custom Web pages will be updated automatically, and all other links (e.g. inside Messages, Photo posts, and Lists) will be redirected from the old URL to the new one for at least six months. You will want to get into the habit of using the new address, though, and if you have specific pages or communities on your Favorites or Bookmarks list, you should update them to the new address.

What is the new e-mail address for my community?
Take the name of your community, remove any spaces, and add @groups.msn.com to the end of the name. For example, if your community is "My Photos", the new community e-mail address will be MyPhotos@groups.msn.com. Your old e-mail address will continue to work for six months from the date of the transition, but you can use the new one as soon as the name change takes effect. If you'd like more information on how to use your Community/Group's mailing list feature see: How to send an e-mail to your group.

What else is changing?
Group e-mail distribution lists will be easier to use.
Do you like receiving group messages in your inbox but find the sheer volume overwhelming? Now you will easily be able to subscribe to only those discussions that interest you.
Multiple discussion deletions are coming!
No more tedious individual discussion deletion. Managers will have a simple new way of selecting and deleting multiple discussions.

Look for additional information on your What’s New page in the upcoming weeks.

http://www.shacknews.com/screens.x/doom3/DOOM+3/1/thumbs/fatty.jpg You can tell they're only at medium quality. The textures are REALLY blurred!

yeh - the thing is thou that most of the models' appearances are actually created by bump maps (which i think are then turned into displacement by the engine)

What are you talking about washed out extures. That is a jpeg image, compressed from the original targa output. Jpeg makes things fuzzy, that is how it works. Regardless, I still would say you are crazy if we were looking at the actual screendump. What game in the world has textures that look as detailed as that jpeg. the bummapping on that fat guy's face is unbelievably realistic. The clothes, eyes, everything is unbelievably nice. I cannot think of a single game announced or on the market that I have seen detail hold up in like this one. The additionaly fact this was on medium just blows me away. Ishmael

i have this rule: only buy hardware that you can't live without. If there are no games that support the new hardware, don't buy the hardware. Everyone and their mom was telling me I should go with the MUCH more expensive GeForce4 Ti over the GeForce4 MX. And I knew how much lower end it was. But when it came down to it: it will play all the game that I want to play better then my crapy GeForce2. And there were no games out in the market that I wanted that required the extra hardware. If you wait until those titles appear in the market, like Doom3. Then you should buy the hardware that supports it. I'm sure the Geforce 4 Ti will work fine with Doom 3. But my point is when I buy it (or something better) then it will be a lot cheaper (or a lot better).
