Microsoft Corp. plans to roll out its Xbox Live online video game service in North America on Nov. 15.

On that day, customers can buy a $49.95 starter kit available in about 5,000 storefronts around North America.

The kits include a one-year subscription, an Xbox headset to communicate with other players and a game, marketing director John O'Rourke said Monday.

Microsoft will also launch six games, including NFL Fever 2003 and Unreal Championship, for users. Users must have a high-speed connection to the Internet to use the service.

Microsoft will start testing of the online game service later this month with about 10,000 gamers, he said.

hahaha... and all the xbox people said that we PS2 people were stupid becasue we would have to pay $50 for the PS2 network adapter, when it was already built into the xbox... Well at least with PS2 i dont have to spend $50 a YEAR!
#2.1 velocity3k on 19 Aug 2002 - 17:18
No with PS2 you will be paying $168 a year for one game.

Its called MMORPG and you pay for those on PCs also. On ps2 if you just wanna play twisted metal, socom, tony hawk or anything such is free.

it may be 50 dollars a year...but does PS2 have all the same online features...and service is left to the developers..who can charge individual rates for online service. Xbox live allows you to play ALL games that support it for 50 bucks a year.

You obviously have no idea why people buy gaming consoles. My PC is more powerful then my xbox but I still bought one.

I agree with you on that one. People buy and play consoles because of certain types of games i.e. - platform games, fighting, shooting, turn-based RPG ala Final Fantasy, etc. Some types of games only work well on consoles and other work better on PC's. Although I dought I will ever buy a Xbox tho. The only 2 games that even looked remotely interesting were DOA3 and Halo. But that was a year ago and nothing to this day has seemed appealing. Even when I was at E3 2002 in LA this year, none of the games looked interesting. It's all about Nintendo and Sony...

No, stay with the PS2. There are better and more original games on that system. Plus it has an established software base and is backed by almost every developer out there.

Ummm... Correct me if I'm wrong. Its not $50 a year. The $50 dollars is for the first year and the headset. Have they even released pricing details for the following years?
#8.1 Fonze on 20 Aug 2002 - 05:29
EXACTLY! $50 is for the starter kit: Microphone, One-year of Xbox live, and a game!!! a bloody game along with that. true the MMORPGs will cost u something in the range of 100-130. which is most deff worth it!!! i play daoc on my pc right now and i can tell u i will never go back to a regular rpg like diablo 2 ever again. tried NWN..... what crap.... DAOC is better! btw DAOC is Dark Age of Camelot, which is getting a new expansion pack in december along with a full gfx overhaul to match direct x 8.2 standards. but to play games like Tekken, Tony hawk, or NHL online, that would be really great. sure FPShooters are better on PC, but everyone knows some games are best on consoles, and u can bet those games thrive on xbox live

mpenza: it will probably be like a 10.95 charge a month after the first year
