- Damn you MS! They are just trying to get rid of the competition.

- Rare was hardly a competitor. It would be a different story if Microsoft bought Sony or Nintendo. Oh, and I'm not bashing Rare, I loved a lot of their games. I'm just saying that just because Microsoft buys another company doesn't mean they're doing it to get rid of the compitition. If Microsoft hadn't of bought Rare, Sony would of.

- maybe they will actually make a decent bond remake that will be as good as Goldeneye
-
#3.1 Posted by kuregu02 on 21 Sep 2002 - 18:33
- Sadly, Rare doesn't own the license to Bond anymore (EA owns it now). I don't think Nintnedo owns Perfect Dark, though. I can't wait!

- No,No,No,No,No,No,No,NO
AHHH! No Conker's Other Bad Day for Gamecube. I want to see the Xbox drop dead and die, and stay dead. I still will never buy an Xbox, even though one of the best game company have switched sides.
Xbox,
· Crap Company
· Crap Games (excludes rare)
· Crap Online service
· Crap Remote needed to watch DVD's
· Crap Controler
· Crap Prices for anything and everything Xbox
I very much dislike the Xbox.
N-E-Way, I see this more of a loss for Rare than Nintendo. I don't know anyone who has an Xbox. I mean,
· Microsoft? arent they the people that make the crap for my computer?
That is what they think when they here Microsoft. Sony and Nintendo on the other hand,
· Sony? they made the PSX and my sexy 48" Widescrene HDTV.
· Nintindo? they've been making games & systems 4-ever. plus, they make the tiny portable system too.
Microsoft has nothing but money and advertizing behind the Xbox. I'm done hateing on the Xbox now.

- I disagree with a lot of your arguments. I hate Conkers bad day. Dumb game. Stupid premise. We'll just say that everybody has a bad quarter, eh? But we all know that rare makes great games, and I love it. I want to see the GameCube drop dead and die, and stay dead. I still will never buy a GameCube, dispite what rare does.
Cēzero wrote... Xbox *Crap Company *Crap Games (excludes rare) *Crap Online service *Crap Remote needed to watch DVD's *Crap Controler *Crap Prices for anything and everything Xbox
Crap company? Sure... I'll give you that one. Crap Games? Pfft... are you talking about GameCube? I HATE all those kiddy games. Are you serious? Xbox has good games. Halo rocks. I like my football games, and they all look the best on the Xbox. The number of games is to be desired, but in that category, I'd say PS2 is the best (I've sold my soul to FFX). Crap online service? 50 bucks a month for any game, they include a mic? You've GOT to be on crack. Remote? Sure I'll give ya that one. It made me mad too. Crap Controler? I really like the Xbox controller. I had a real hard time going to a PS2 controller. I still wish they had A B X Y or something rather than O X [] /. The GameCube controler is HORRIBLE. They basically expect you to use just 1 button (a) and have 2 (!!) trigger buttons, implying that I can use both of them. the L and R triggers need to be pushed down like an inch before they actually register. The C buttons are akward. (And I came from an N64). Sure, the black and white buttons are hard to get on the Xbox, but really... how many games to you see that use them extensively. Prices? Go check best buy buddy. It's 50 bucks more for the system. And even that is worth paying for MUCH better graphics. Has my Xbox crashed? Yes, once. But in it's defence, I stuck it on top of my (hot) replay TV machine, and it overheated. After I moved it, it's been fine ever since. WTF to I care that it has an XP kernel inside it? It works. And nVidia makes it baby butt smooth.

- Simplex, Simplex, Simplex... Just because a game looks kiddy doesn't mean it is going to be a crappy game. Look at both Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine. People praised these games because they have EXCELLENT gameplay. And NO 3D platform game has surpassed the quality of Super Mario 64. I admit that I don't own an Xbox and thats because I can't see justifing spending $200 just for one or 2 games (namely Halo and DOA3). Halo came out a YEAR AGO! from the way things are going there haven't been any ORIGINAL blockbuster Xbox games. PS2 has had TONS of them and the Gamecube has some very nice ones (Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime, Super Mario Sunshine). I work part-time at a video game studio and all of my co-workers haven't been blown away by the Xbox. They don't see any good games for it (except for the few that came out a YEAR AGO!) You're not a real gamer...real gamers will play any video game that is enjoyable...

- Is it just me or is anyone following a trend here with Micro$oft? They HAVE to buy (or try to buy) companies just so they can have decent games on their system. They tried to buy SquareSoft (the DUMBEST move in gaming history). They even tried to buy Sega. Two of the industries biggest heavy weights.
On the other hand, with Nintendo and Sony. The big game developers are just deciding to make games for those system without either companies having to brib them.
This should be a danger sign to anyone (especially those owning an Xbo
. NO American developed system has ever succeeded against Japanese consoles. Anyone remember the Jaguar? It's not a door stop
.
Also, these Xbox fanboys that think that think the Xbox is going to surpass the PS2 are dillusional. Sony would have to do screw alot of things up to allow Micro$oft to surpass them.
Oh and XSTAINDX, Nintendo owns Donket Kong. Not Rare. Shigeru Miyamoto created DK. As for KI. I hope they keep KI 3 on definate hold because I would have only wanted to see it on the Gcube. -

- Microsoft sold a shit load more XBOXs than Atari with the Jaguar. You can't even compare the two.
-
#15.2 Posted by jago6498 on 23 Sep 2002 - 02:17
- You obviously didn't read what I wrote. I wasn't talking about how many systems the Jaguar and Xbox sold. I was talking about howthey are both american developed systems. The Jagaur didn't last very long and is history repeats itself, the xbox will follow in its footsteps.
-
#15.3 Posted by kuregu02 on 23 Sep 2002 - 16:26
- I did read what you wrote. Oh, and Sega was a Japanese console maker and they failed in the hardware buisness. By your reasoning, ALL Japanese console makers would not fail. Basically it all comes down to 'never say never' or 'never say always'.

- ah well thereve got the money and the buying power to buy out the companies so what not?? I mean if you designed marketed and sold a gaming console, and wanted the best and most widest range of games on your system, and had vast amounts of money to axquire this with, wouldnt you buy out whoever and whatever you could??
-
#16.1 Posted by jago6498 on 23 Sep 2002 - 08:04
- Like I said before, Nintendo and Sony don't need to pay developers to develop a broad range of games for them. Micro$oft is having to either bribe or buy other companies in order to get the software they need. If certain games aren't being made for the system then this should a red flag warning to the company that something is wrong.

- rather than buying consols games out with there huge kitty they have why not just go for the pc game makers after all xbox is just a glorified pc with a flashy box... who cares pc own anyway....... wtf is the point of a consol...... ? forgive me for saying this but people who buy consols are thick as pigshit 1) hmmm pc's can do alot more than just play games.. 2) graphics are far better on pc and hmmmmmm its worth the money.. so pay for a consol and just do what with it ? not alot...... its ms's way of getting into a market that they really dont understand and ps2 no matter how much i hate it will win out of the two for one main reason... sony know what there doing and wont have service packs out for there ps2 like ms will have for there xbox and as far as i can see ms have problems with no matter what they do.. have fun guys.. btw i have the right to slam ms cos i use there os its ok not the best but what is the best ? lol anyway just my opinion

- Hey Fubar, not all PC's are created equal. Why do you think that games that are made for the PC have to have so many settings for graphics? It's because not every person can afford the latest and greatest nVidia or ATi graphics card. Or the lastest and greatest AMD or Intel CPU. With console games you have to worry about setting minimum and suggested system requirements.
Can you name a GOOD reason why you hate the PS2? And I don't mean some fanboy answer. Put some serious thought into it. The PS2 might now be the most powerful system on the block anymore, but it has the GAMES. All that matter is GAMES. Having the best hardware ina console doesn't mean jack if you don't have the GAMES. Look at the Sega Master system and the NES. If you go here, you'll see that clearly the SMS had better graphics and was more powerful then the NES. BUT, most of the BEST games made were made for the NES. Same with the N64 and the original PSX. The N64 had better graphics but the PSX had better games and a bigger library.
Last thing, why not grow up a little bit. Just because a PC can do more then play games doesn't mean that it has the best games. Some of the THE best games and most widely known franchises have been created on consoles (i.e. - Sonic, Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus Aran (Metroid fame), Metal Gear, Shinobi, etc.).
You can also come off your high horse about being able to talk trash about M$ because you use Windows. Pretty much EVERYONE uses Windows on their computers. Your not special because you use Windows.

- I jusst saw something interesting, something about how RARE acounted for like 1% of Nintendo's games for like the past 2 years. THat would be reason enouch to sell it, but jesus, not to MS.

- Ok lazy people if you researched anything instead of automatically assuming MS was the bad guy. You would know Nintendo sold it because rare was making 1% of the profit as opposed to the 9% from two years before. Secondly Nintendo still owns all the rights to rare games except Perfect Dark. Besides nintendo games are so stupid and non violent. I used to like them until they made Marion their life and sole. I mean whats his latest game? Cleaning a toxic island or something, next week he will be selling mary kay.

- Have you even played Super Mario Sunshine? It is a spectacular game. Granted that the camera blows big time, but other then that it is a VERY fun game to play. If a game was fun to play (i.e. - good gameplay) then it shouldn't matter whether or not it is non-violent. If Nintendo games are stupid, then why do people all over the world praise most of the Nintendo developed games? Their games are multi-million sellers and their franchises are recognized worldwide as being excellent games. No I'm not a Nintendo fanboy either. I actually own 6 systems (NES, SNES, Genesis, 32x, Sega CD, Gamecube, PS2 and Dreamcast). As long as a game is fun I will buy it and enjoy it. True gamers don't care whether or not a game has bright or dark graphics. Plus graphics matter very little in comparison to gameplay. Games are what support a system, not the most powerful hardware.

- Alright, I'm not meaning to step into the middle of a huge gaming war here, but quite frankly I think everybody ranting about how the xbox, or nintendo, or PS2 is better than all the others is waistin their breath. Nobody cares. It depends on your taste. When you get right down to it they're all pretty much the same. They all have pretty much the same graphics, ok games, and etc. I am a fan of the Xbox mainly because the games I want are on there. I don't care what my friends or anybody else says Halo is friggin awesome! I can't think of a single game on the PS2 that I want, and Gamecube has SOME cool games, but I don't think they're going to last, seeing as how it's nintendo *remembers how the N64 went down the crapper* Look, I hate Microsoft just as much as anybody, but Halo, Blood Wake, Wreckless, Amped, Dead to Rights, Project Gotham Racing, NEED I GO ON? It depends on your own taste. I'm sure I stirred up thousands of geeks out there who are going to come on and tell me about how great the PS2 is... Oh and another thing, when you're slammin the Xbox, PLEASE don't bring up that you have to have a controller to play DVD's... That is the uttermost stupid thing you could POSSIBLY say. Who friggin gives a crap??? It's what, 30 bucks? Besides, most people have a little thing called a D-V-D PLAYER. I mean, I could understand if we were talking about DVD Players here, and one of them you had to buy a controller seperately... But The Xbox's main function, incase you haven't noticed, is to PLAY GAMES! (mainly Halo) Now, when Christmas rolls around, I'm blowin 200 bucks on an Xbox and there's nothin you can do to change my mind. So stick that in your pipe and SMOKE IT!
-
#21.1 Posted by jago6498 on 24 Sep 2002 - 03:02
- Um dude. Have you played "Dead to Rights" yet? It blows. The camera makes the game pretty much unplayable. I work at a game developer studio and not one person there likes the game. PLUS, "Dead to Rights" might be exclusive but take the word "EXCLUSIVE" witha grain of salt. It's only exclusive to the Xbox for a couple of months. So that doesn't count as an Xbox only game and neither does Wreckless. BUT I do agree with you that they all pretty much the same in terms of graphics. The average joe isn't going to notice all the little tinny differences between the games. When it boils down to it, its the first party games that really matter. Not the third party games.
-
#21.2 Posted by FinalMoon on 24 Sep 2002 - 03:04
- I'm sorry I didn't clarrify myself... When I said the N64 went down the crapper I meant that after awhile, no more good games came out. The N64's growth was stunted, and all the gaming companies excercised their ability to make the most terrifyingly STUPID games ever! I mean, The World is Not Enough is a classic example... They tried to make a sequal to one of the greatest FPS games of all time, and it totally sucked. After everybody had stopped talking about how cool Goldeneye was, they realized, that was the last good game that the N64 put out. That was it... I don't want to get suckered into that again. Really the main reason I like the Xbox so much is cuz I can't think of a single game I want on the Playstation and I dread the thought of buying another nintendo system. But hey, years from now we'll have all the games from the 3 systems on our computers and our grandkids will be playing the new 'Utra Mega Super Duper System' and we'll say, "I remember Halo..." and they'll look at us like we were talking about Mario Brothers... Not that that has anything to do with anything... Just... an interesting thought...

Nintendo said in a statement that it has sold its 49 percent interest in Rare--developer of games based on popular Nintendo franchises such as Donkey Kong--but declined to name the buyer or price.
But Peter MacDougall, executive vice president at Nintendo of America, confirmed to CNET News.com that the sale was part of Rare's acquisition by Microsoft, which now owns Nintendo's 49 percent stake and Rare's majority share.
"The entire company has been sold to Microsoft," he said.
Microsoft has not announced the Rare purchase, and a company representative declined to comment on the deal. The acquisition has been the subject of numerous reports, estimating the buy at anywhere from $400 million to $540 million.
Schelley Olhava, an analyst for research firm IDC, said the type of family-friendly games Rare creates are exactly what Microsoft needs to broaden the appeal of the Xbox beyond hardcore gamers.
Former president Richard Belluzzo, who left Microsoft earlier this year, earned $918,723 in salary and bonus and $13.7 million in "all other compensation." That reflects the remaining portion of a $15 million advance Microsoft made to Belluzzo in December 2000 as a guaranteed minimum of what his stock options would be worth as they vested.
Microsoft disclosed that it made a similar arrangement in November 2000 with Richard Emerson, senior vice president of corporate development. The company advanced him $12 million, as part of its efforts to recruit him from the investment banking field.
Financial arrangements such as these are now illegal under the corporate-reform directives laid out under the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act and Microsoft "in the future will not enter into these forms of transactions for its executive officers or directors," the filing said.
Compared to executives at other top companies, Gates and Ballmer receive low salaries, said Robert Fong, managing director with Seattle-based executive search firm Leadership Venture Partners.
"(Five hundred thousand dollars) for an organization like this is nothing," Fong said. But Gates and Ballmer aren't living for their paychecks, he said. "You don't find many execs 20 years after an (initial public offering) of a company still so heavily involved. They're not working for the cash anymore."
Jeffrey Raikes, group vice president, productivity and business services, earned $745,083, a 7% increase over his 2001 compensation. Craig Mundie, senior vice president and chief technical officer, earned the biggest raise, jumping 38% to $627,172 from $453,899 the year before.
Microsoft also announced it will hold its annual meeting for shareholders on Nov. 5.
