Thanks RaINE...The Xbox Linux Project (http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/) announced that Microsoft Windows 2000 has been successfully started and run on a Microsoft Xbox gaming console. This has been accomplished by using the Linux operating system, which already works reliably on the Xbox, as host environment. Windows has been run inside Linux with common PC virtualization software.

Full networking is supported and Windows 2000 can make use of a keyboard and a mouse connected to the Xbox, as well as of any other devices connected through the USB. The performance of Windows 2000 inside Linux on the Xbox is good enough to play MPEG-4 movies at fullscreen. Common Windows applications like Microsoft Office work without any problems.

Although running Windows 2000 might be an interesting application for the Xbox, the Xbox Linux Project continues working on Linux-based solutions. Linux is not only more versatile and more flexible - Linux as well as many important Linux applications, such as OpenOffice, audio and video players, are available free of charge and can be downloaded from the internet.

As the probe deepens, reports have surfaced that Keller worked closely with former Homestore Executive Vice President Peter Tafeen, to orchestrate deals allegedly involved in a practice known as "round tripping," in which companies do swaps to funnel money back to themselves, artificially inflating revenues.

AOL is already under government investigation for accusations of "round tripping" and other questionable accounting practices. The Internet unit of media conglomerate AOL Time Warner Inc. acknowledged last month that it may have improperly accounted for some $49 million in revenue. That admission accompanied the dismissal of Keller's former boss David Colburn, according to the Journal.

With ex-Homestore executives agreeing to cooperate in the probe, it remains to be seen if further evidence emerges linking Homestore's accounting troubles with AOL.

Representatives for AOL were not immediately available to comment on the reports Thursday morning.

LOL, another Windows Zealot in denial. I'm the first one to agree that Linux as a desktop sucks, and I'll never switch. BUT, when it comes to servers, Linux is unmatched. Linux is much faster, stabler, more secure, runs on older hardware, has much more free software, and doesn't waste server resources with a GUI. Need I go on? The primary reason AFAIK to get another OS on the XBox, from what I understand, is to allow it to be used as a cheap server. I mean, that's a lot of power for 200$. Another use is to allow it to be used as a DivX/DVD/VCD/Whatever player, and that is being handled by several other projects. Now, what is the title of this project? That's right, the xbox LINUX project. Not the Xbox WINDOWS project. If they are going to take the trouble to hack the xbox, they can damned well put whatever OS on the thing that they want to.

you sound quite angry. have i upset you?

Linux isn't much faster or stabler or more secure as a server.. its only a budget alternative to those who can't afford to lisence commercial software.

I guess that explains all those big corporations that use *nix based operating systems.. They simply can't afford to lisence commercial software.

SQL Backend Web Server FTP Server SMB (Windows Network) Muck Server (Telnet like RPG game, if you want to put it that way) SSH Shell Client Mail Server (qmail) Live antivirus scanner X Graphical Application Server Terminal Server (full desktop in your workstation window, kids!) -----(Server is extremely busy as it's a corporate one, suppose it's in the kind of environnement that stresses hardware and software alot) --- Pentium 133mhz 64mb RAM 87gb SCSI Array Custom built (Open source ) Linux OS (2.4.19) ----- Do that with windows NT and your machine collapses. Need I say more? You indeed save money with Linux, and you can tweak it to your liking. It eats less ressources since you can select exactly WHAT is running, and is stabler than Windows 2000 Advanced Server. (my 87 days and 3 hours uptime is proof of that) I am not bashing windows, just saying that Linux IS more efficient in the server room. I have four years of Linux experience and I work as a network administrator, Linux consultant and PHP programmer -- so I know what I am talking about when I say that Windows NT is not reliable when compared to not just linux -- but any flavor of Unix.

Please dude. That setup would probley hold a max of 10 people using all thoes services. Linux is not that good.

..87 days? whoopedee doo. i had my server (running win2k server) up for 180 days once. i restarted it because the FTP server i was using at the time (CesarFTP) died and i had to restart to put in a new one. oh, and i don't care if you believe that or not. i know what the truth is anyway, there are unix servers that have been up for many more than 360 days, it all just depends on what you're doing with it and things like having a good battery backup system.

Microsoft should have left a Windows onto XBOX, never mind, it does run a stripped down version of Windows.
#4 Rudy on 27 Sep 2002 - 18:03
they could proly make it run without the linux based cuz the OS of the xbox is a crippled version on 2k
#5 DigitalFreedom on 27 Sep 2002 - 19:09

#11.1 CoCoLUS on 28 Sep 2002 - 21:44
and now we should try and see if installing another vmware in the "vmwared 2000" would work, which should emulate linux cripp. 2k -> linux -> 2k -> (linu makes sense, doesn't it CoCoLUS
#12 elw3irdo on 29 Sep 2002 - 02:11
Hah nice.
#13 d00dman on 29 Sep 2002 - 04:35
the hell with running linux... how about they make the xbox actually run some good games
(1 reply) #14 btallack on 30 Sep 2002 - 00:11
Personally, i think the project they should be working on is not nesc to run Linux on XBox, but to port games like GTA3 to the XBox, or for that matter, why not a PS2 emulator? (Wishful thinking? Yeah, probably)
#14.1 Martog on 01 Oct 2002 - 15:03
They can't port PC games over because they do not have the source code for the game. That and Xbox does not run .exe's even though it runs Windows. And the current PS2 emulator doesn't work all that well with full games I believe at the moment so that counts that out for now. =P
