Mobile phone maker Nokia entered a new market on Monday as it unveiled seven new devices, including one that doubles as a game console and takes aim at Nintendo's teenage hit product Gameboy Advance.

Nokia showed the N-Gage -- its first mobile phone that also allows consumers to play quality games, which are stored and distributed on memory cards, on a color screen.

The device, which will be introduced in February of 2003, is a direct challenge to Japan's Nintendo, which is expected to sell 12 million units of its Gameboy Advance across the globe this year, according to market research firm ScreenDigest.

Like Nintendo, Nokia said it would also become a games publisher.

Nokia said Sega, a leading Japanese games publisher, will develop games for the N-Gage device.

Not bad. Too many buttons though and the screen looks kinda small to take on the GBA.

ah I hope it fails and they loose a cpl million for trying such an unprofessional and childish venture. I generally like nokia but their future phone designs lately have taken a turn for the worse.

Honestly. Does Nokia really think that they can defeat the GBA? Does anyone remember Neo Geo Pocket? The NGP was a cool handheld but it (and other handheld systems) have failed to even come close to denting GBA's armor. GBA has the games that everyone wants and is based of hardware that pretty everyone loves (the SNES).

the design needs to be changed a fair bit but if they do it properly i think they would be in with a chance to defeat nintendo especailly it it has games, mp3 and phone capabilities

Yea if that ever happens, pinch me b/c it must be a dream. Since Game Boy technology seems to be 2 generations behind the home machines, I hope the next one combines the polygon power of the PSX and the filtering effects of the N64. That would be sweet!
