Microsoft has revealed some of its pricing plans for the US Xbox Live service, hopefully giving some indication of what it's lined up for European consumers. Renewals will start at $49.99 for a year's subscription, or $5.99 for a month; subs can be topped up either online or with top up cards bought from various stores.

The voice communicator will sell separately for a rather princely $29.99, but new users will also be able to buy an all-in starter kit including bundled games, communicator and one year's subscription for a pretty respectable $69.99. Assuming that Microsoft plays fair with currency conversion, we expect this to translate to either £29.99 or £34.99 annually in the UK, or £3.99 a month.

Well MS sell the starter kit for £35 in the UK, so the yearly fee should be smaller then that.

bleh.. Xbox Live should really be free. I mean what does paying for Xbox Live get you? NOTHING. You still have to pay separate fees for some games, and you have to run your own servers on your capped low-bandwidth laggy DSL/cable connection. I think Sega had it right with the Dreamcast/SegaNet. Except for one game, it was completely free, and they hosted dedicated low-latency servers.

There was 1 game with extra fees for the Dreamcast. 1! For free you could play a ton of games online. Of course, Sega went out of business. Oh, if only they had known stupid people would be willing to pay for an ISP and a service that lets them play online, and extra fees for some games. I mean, a company could make some good money that way

ROTFLMFAO![/neoquote] it's amazing how stupid you are to realize what you get for that $50. unreal, mechassualt, ghost recon, splinter cell...soon to be dead or alive, the list goes on and ALL of them included in the $50. dumb fart. can i downloaded new levels to games on the ps2??? what's that you say hell no??? of course not, that right there warrants $50.

Some of these games are also completely free to play on other platforms. [quote]can i downloaded new levels to games on the ps2???[/quote]Yes, actually you can. Same for all other platforms, including GameCube (PSO has lots of downloadable content and such), and PC.

Same for all other platforms, including GameCube (PSO has lots of downloadable content and such), and PC.[/neoquote] oh give me a break, you can't download new levels for Splinter Cell on the Cube or Ps2. you can't download new mutliplayer modes and maps on the GCN...where are you going to store it?? Ghost recon on the Gamecube doesn't have online play and you can't download new missions for the GCN version of Splinter Cell. Clone wars for GCN and PS2 doesn't have online play. they spend extra development time adding it to the xbox version, which costs them more money. while they aren't getting any of the $50 from Live, MS still asks for the money because running servers 24/7 costs money. while the games may be player hosted, they are running off a centralized server farm which costs money. the bandwidth to download new content cost money out of MS's pocket. you mention the glories of PSO which charges a monthly fee, but criticize Live which charges one flat fee for a year, wtf?? i can see if the Gamecube had other online games for you to compare, but they don't. they only have PSO. it cost money for the developers to spend extra time developing more levels and more content for a game that has already been in the store shelves for months. comparing PC to consoles?? funny i thought we were talking strictly about consoles here. considering with the PS2 and GCN service you're going to have to pay extra for the modem which is about $40 in some areas, it ain't exactly free either.

who are you talking to?

[neoquote=#4.0 by ChadyzGroove]you have to pay extra for PSO[/neoquote] Exactly. There are also more titles on the way that will require an addition fee, one off the top of my head is Star Wars Galaxies.

We're focused on expanding the content, community, and competition on Live. Of the more than 100 Live games that will be available to choose from in the next year, I'd guess only a few—and perhaps only Phantasy Star Online from Sega's Sonic Team—will require a monthly fee. Sega did have it right with Dreamcast, IMO. People don't want to pay more and more to play online and what Microsoft is doing by charging EXTRA for voice and data is just rediculous. With the other consoles all you need is an ISP and you can go online. Sure there is a charge for some games, but to pay for games AND to play online is insane. You would think with all the money Microsoft is making they could at least keept it free so we don't have to be multi millionaires to play online.

Your not playing for nothing... server space and tons of bandwidth cost money. Why are there alot of online games for the xbox? Because companies and microsoft don't lose tons of money with them.

Hmm $5.99 a month or $49.99 per year for hundreds of games and content on the Xbox, or $4.95/monthly for just EA games on the PS2. I Think the I'll go with the XBox model
