Destineer subsidiary MacSoft today announced that its long-awaited conversion of Unreal Tournament 2003 will hit stores on June 11.

Unreal Tournament 2003 is the latest version of the popular first person shooter. Created by Digital Extremes in collaboration with Epic Games Inc., the game was published for the Mac by Atari. The Mac version is currently in development at Epic and will be published by MacSoft next month.

First unveiled to attendees of January's Macworld Conference & Expo in San Francisco, Unreal Tournament 2003 features arena-style gameplay where players can either go online on LANs or the Internet and compete against each other, or against other "bots," or computer controlled players. Unreal Tournament 2003 features a variety of new features and capabilities, weapons, maps and more.

Unreal Tournament 2003's pending release was hinted at a few weeks ago when Apple released Mac OS X 10.2.6. At the time, Apple indicated in its release notes that changes had been made to the Nvidia and ATI graphics drivers to better support Unreal Tournament 2003. Shortly thereafter, MacSoft offered up a "beta tech demo" of the game featuring four playable maps.

And not just any fingerprint recognition: Steve Morton built fingerprint recognition into the trigger of a gun so it could be fired only by its owner or by any group of people whose fingerprints were programmed to be recognized by the gun. That product development decision, which on its face makes a lot of sense in a violent world where children sometimes play with guns, almost killed the company. It wasn't that the project was too ambitious: Morton built successful prototypes that could have been produced at a reasonable cost. But the gun makers wanted no part of it. "The fingerprint business was frustrating," Morton recalls. "Nobody would partner with us for liability reasons. There was just no support, and of course, the National Rifle Association hated it. People would see our demonstrations and predict we'd soon be rich, but it never happened. We got lots of good press, and I was on national TV several times, but we couldn't sell a thing."

Oh dear, a little late isn't it, considering UT2004 will be released for the PC this fall. Yet another reason why I'm laying off Mac's, they're always far behind (hardware & software). I know this is inviting arguments, but that's your choice, I'm simply making my comment of facts.
