This fall under the "yeah, whatever..." category. 3DRealms is looking for a 3D character animator to work on Duke Nukem Forever. Yes, Duke Nukem Forever. You'd think they would at least show a screenshot at the E3. Maybe they're pulling a Valve on us; who knows...
We're looking for amazing character animators for Duke Nukem Forever. We don't care if you work at Pixar, or if you are fresh out of school. We're just looking for exceptional talent, and we're willing to reward it. You will have access to a truly cutting edge 3D engine, in which to make your creations come to life. You will be part of a small, focused team and you will be responsible for a lot of animation duties. You will be able to animate the slimiest of alien bastards, as well as the sweetest of Earth females. You will not just be animator #11, at a sweat shop. You will be a material contributor and you will have a lot of fun, freedom and control.

i dont even think that 3drealms has a clue that they're a laughing stock and viewed as a big joke

I think what they really mean is that they're looking for someone who wants to work forever on a Duke Nukem game that is never coming out....
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #5 Posted by ooo on 21 May 2003 - 19:21
There is more, 3Drealms also took off the Duke Nukem Forever screenshots saying that they do not represent the game anymore... updates to come later on....
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #6 Posted by BeLGaRaTh on 21 May 2003 - 19:29
The screenshots couldnt represent the game anymore, as it looks like it would take another complete re-write, these guys would have to do the models and stuff from scratch in order to do the animation (AFAIK) ... as Spyder mentioned, the whole thing is becoming a HUGE JOKE and 3DRealms don't even appear to realise it, either that, or they're very good at keeping a straight face I mean how many rewrites has it had (including engine changes) and how many years has it been in .. umm .. development

5.5 years... half a year more then Half Life.... I bet Half Life has had changes in all that time, difference is, Valve were smart to shut up, 3DRealms weren't. BTW check out their forums, they laugh about it all the time, the employees of 3DRealms hang in the websites' forums.

Whats the point, they must have wasted godknows how much money on it so far, and when it turns out to be a big flop against the likes of hl2 and doom3 then 3drealms are gonna go bankrupt

The reason that 3DRealms even said something about the game was that they were supposed to use the game engine called "Build". But this time I think that they are doing some heavy work on the engine. I wish I had access to their office so that I could see what's going on, if they're eating donuts or if they are making a game that's like HL2 and Doom III together. Nice graphics and cool physics.

and how long have they been 'working' on this project, and they still need to find a 3d artist? as I see it, they'll be working on Duke Nuke'm .... forever

Tobbe.... the Build engine is not the DNF engine, the Build engine is basically the wolfenstien/doom engine.. which could build rooms but not levels on top of each other, if they were modifying the Build engine into something impressive... then that would be.. impressive; and I could understand the time they are taking. They are using the Unreal/warfare engine and it is highly modified, the problem is that when Epic releases new builds which contain a lot of new features, if 3d Realms want to keep up with the tech, a lot of work has to be redone

Not this again ... 3D Realms should either finish it or abandon it. It can't take that long to produce one game.

Duke Nukem Whenever... is certainly becoming a bigger joke than the April fools' day joke 3DRealms pulled about the Atari 2600 version. As Valkyre said, Daikatana springs to mind. But I have another big gaming joke for you: Simon the Sorcerer 3D... had a "chat" with Simon Woodroffe the other day about it... took forever to make (well it seemed that way, anyhow, but it had more to do with publishers jumping on and off the project like madmen), and when it was finally released, after a complete rewrite when Hasbro decided it had to be full 3D instead of the LucasArts-style pre-rendered 2D backdrops/3D characters combo, the engine chosed was hopelessly outdated (due to cost issues), the models blocky beyond recognition, the environments not very detailed, and to add insult to injury, Hasbro forced the team to scratch over 1500 lines of dialogue that were deemed "inappropriate" for the Hasbro brand. So instead of a beautifully rich environment as in the first two games, and sharp English wit, buyers were faced with a flat game, kiddyfied humor and no original "Simon" feel at all... So with Simon3D in mind, I just want to say... Whatever the reason behind the delays for Duke Forever, "it can't be that bad"!

I don't remember when, but I wanna say 1998, maybe 97, when I first saw a screenshot in the back of a pc gamer saying they would show the story on it next month. This never happened.

Yeah, confused the build engine with another, the build engine does power the original DN3d and it is capable of scripts etc it is however not very advanced in any way and as far as I know development on the engine has stopped. The Unreal Warfare/Tournament engines are virtually the same, 3d Realms is an Epic Liscense holder, so they get updates to the latest tech upgrades, they may have bought the Tournament engine but as it has been upgraded by Epic over the years it is now the Unreal Warfare engine
We don't care if you work at Pixar, Yeah right. Anyone who currently works for Pixar and jumps ship to work on this game is mentally unstable or wants to experience the exciting life of an unemployed panhandler in about a year or so. What kind of a boost to your resume would it be to say you worked on DNF? The only people who are going to take these postitions are gonna be newbies to the profession. This does not look good for the quality of the graphics for DNF when they can't get good people to work for them.

3D Realms has money coming in from licensing the Duke Nukem name to console/PC developers over the years. They have stated time and again that they were flush in cash reserves and are not under any pressure from a publisher. That's a shame because this is one instance in which a publisher's pressure would have made an umotivated lot get to work and set deadlines for themselves. I don't think that anyone at 3D Realms has any faith that their title will deliver once released. Expectations are too high and technology has left them in the dust several times in 6 years. A little history 1997 Pentium II 333MHz with 64Meg and Voodoo 2 SLI was a screaming system Running on Win95 We've gone through 5 major OS revisions in this time and our computers have sped up by 6 times. Our 3D video cards have more memory on board now than the avg. gamer system in 1997. Haw many revisions has DN4ever had to have gone through to stay current? Anyone on that dev team must bored as hell or furious. richcz3

They say it's their game and you can buy it or leave it when it comes out. They could care less about fans waiting for it. The only way to punish them for such a long dev time is not to buy their game regardless of its quality. The way they see it no matter how long it takes, if it's good or has good word of mouth you'll buy it, if not you won't.
