Sony has revealed plans for the simultaneous release of an internal PS2 hard disc drive and massively multiplayer online role-playing game Final Fantasy XI (FFXI) but not until 2004.

Already available in Japan, FFXI is so popular that an expansion disc has just been released over there. The game won't function without Sony's 40GB Hard Drive, hence the lack of a Western release thus far.

Sony says FFXI and its Hard Drive will be released in the USA between January and March of 2004. No European release date has been announced yet, but given the amount of translation into French, German, etc, required for this type of game and the fact that Final Fantasy X-2 hasn't even been given a European release date yet (it is going to be out in the States in November 2003), we may have to wait until the final quarter of next year.

FFXI needs a PS2 broadband/network adaptor and the upcoming Hard Drive to allow players to connect online, either via broadband or dial-up connection, and join in a truly "persistent world" that keeps evolving, growing and developing, even when gamers are not playing.

I've got a British linux kit which came with the HDD, Network Adapter + all the linux bits and it was only about £100. So I'd say that the HDD alone would be about £50... maybe less with high sales.

I don't understand why people here are so turned off by monthly fees? They're usually quite negligible, especially since most people wouldn't dedicate themselves to more than one or two games in the first place.

If, on the other hand, you're the kind of person who has the time and stamina to immerse himself into three or more game worlds and work on character development on a regular basis...I think money is the least of your problems. ;P

I'll tell you what's against monthly fees. Suppose you're not a real hardcore gamer (like me), but you do like Final Fantasy a lot, and I mean A LOT!!
Well I work from 8:00-17:00 and at night I don't always feel like gaming... so I don't game that much.
It will mean that I have to pay the monthly fee and only can benefit a little from it, since I don't pimp out my subscription.... still have to pay the full price.

So that is the main reason I will never pay for online gaming unless it's pay per play or something (at a decent price ofcourse!!)

In my opinion monthly access fees are only fair if there is like monthly content. Like in the Asherons Call, where each month new items and dungeons and such are added as well as an evolving storyline etc...

That ot if they give the initial game away for free (or small fee for shipping or whatever) and then charge for the months.

Tho it all really depends how much you play.If you play about 4 hours a month, one way it can be looked at is that its the same price as going to a movie or 2 each month.

i couldn't agree more Schmoove. thats exactly the reason i hate fees to play a game as well. i don't have a lot of time to play my games, so why would i pay $x/mth when I'd only find time to play once or twice a week?

Why doesnt everyone get a good PC with a decent graphics card and a fast connection. its got its own hard drive and there are plenty of online games u can play for free. U can get a top of the range graphics card for the same price as a PS2.

on the note of monthly fees, why dont they just charge per hour of gameplay, rounded to the last minute, 100 hours for like 10-15 bucks?
