Microsoft cuts 17 percent of the workforce at the Japan branch.

According to a new report in Nikkei BizTech, Microsoft has laid off 34 employees in the Xbox division of its Japanese offices. The layoffs apparently caused a commotion among the workers because of differences in business practices between Japan and the United States.

According to the article, the Xbox division staff in Japan, which consists of approximately 200 employees, was called to a meeting at the company's Tokyo office on March 20. The staff was then told by its new division head, Par Singh, that the sales of the Xbox in Japan had been extremely disappointing, and that the company will be forcing early retirement on a number of its workers.

The employees were then told to check their e-mail inboxes, in which 34 of the workers received a notice to pack their belongings and go to the conference room. The passageway to the conference room had security guards protecting all the elevators and emergency exits. The terminated employees could use the restroom only if they were accompanied by one of the retained employees. According to one of the employees who was cut, it felt as though they were treated like criminals.

DAMN...that's a freaking harsh way to lay off your employees. give me a break they could have done a much better job at handling this. i feel so sorry for this people, not only because they lost their jobs, but they way in which they were treated. now honestly part of me is laughing like hell cause it's funny lol, but on the serious side, it's some pretty f@cked up stuff

maybe they were afraid of suicides? or aggression? dunno how hot japaneese blood handles layoffs banzai

Definitely suicide prevention. MS wasn't worried about terminated employees stealing (or destroying) the restroom soap dispensers on their way out.

true but maybe they didn't fancy perfoming cavity searches after the ex-employees had been to the rest room

if it was me i'd have taken anything that wasn't nailed down as a mark of dis-respect, that's a lousy way to treat employees.

At least they get to pack their belongings! A buddy of mine worked at MS, he was called into a short meeting then escorted to his car. They boxed his stuff up and shipped it. He did nothing criminal, just turned 50 yrs old the week before.

Acutually this practice is common. At my old job at Getronics (used to be Wang) I was called on my day off to let me know that I had been let go. All my stuff was packed and shipped to my house.

Good thing they didn't find that joint you had in your drawer.

being fired on your off day is one thing, i got fired in an email on my off day before lol, but the security measures like this, they just seem totally unacceptable to me. none of these people are to blame for Xbox's problems in Japan and i'm sure they were working harding to correct it. while they got a good serverance pay, they didn't deserve this treatment. now i usually support MS on most things, but this was just out of hand.

reminds me of a comic i read. i'll post it once i get home. a guy is in the bosses office and he tells him "you should check your email more often. i fired you a week ago."

Being fired just sucks. Being fired and treated like criminal for a company you just worked is just plain misserable.
I think M$ should know better. Amrican cars does not sell well in Japan, why? Because Japanese make better cars that suit their needs. X-Box does not sell well in Japan, Why? Because Japan makes better video game console that meet their culture wants.

Yeah, that shows that the Japanese are more independent. They don't need external help.

This sound pretty much as the normal m$ "being and acting as a dick policy" Don't like American work culture anyway.

This is normal policy in the US. Actually at the telecom company I work for people came into work in the morning and were wondering why their passwords weren't working. An hour later they were given boxes and escorted out the building by a guard. I guess they have to try to protect themselves against anyone who would do a "rm *" or something in the project account before they leave. I dunno.

What's interesting is that I heard that for employees of our company in Europe, they have laws which give them like 2 weeks time after being notified or something. In the US, it's just BYE BYE BIRDIE! Don't let the door bump you in the a$$ on the way out!
