Sony on Thursday quietly released "Stars Wars Galaxies," the long-awaited online game based on the movie series.

"Galaxies" has been in development for several years by LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment, publisher of the hit online game "EverQuest", and has been widely eyed by the game industry as a test of whether online games can attract a broader audience.

Yet the game went on sale Thursday with nary a press release to mark the occasion, a remarkably quiet launch given the hoopla that has accompanied other online games.

Quiet Launch because the online has been crippled due to poor planning.. The game has been out almost 24 hours and nobody can play due to servers crashed. So nobody has been able to connect for a while.. It was pain to regiester at first but they resolved that.

Ohhh welll such is big games

I played beta, by the time I downloaded the patches (took me 3 days because the damn things kept stopping randomly and i had to watch the computer like a hawk to resume) the beta was almost over, i logged in, laggy, buggy, not very fun at all, not very social, the UBER L33T D00DS were just interested in buying the uber armor, noone wanted to go hunting, i never got together to hunt with anyone because of the fact that noone wanted to go hunting, they all wanted to sit in town and lag and trade loot...it sucked horribly...makes me nostalgic for AO in a big way

*sigh* I guess I'll just wait for World of Warcraft then .

Baffles me each time how some people are talking of WOW as if it would be the cure for everything bad in the world.

People used to talk about SWG the same way before it went into beta. It's been the same for AC2, SB, Eve, Earth & Beyond, DAoC...

I'm playing PlanetSide and loving it. I'm also going into asheron's call 2. I've watched my friend play it for 1 hour, and I was sure I would enjoy getting into it.

I've not heard much good news about SWG though...its such a shame cuz they could have done something great with it...but they chose to go the wrong way.

Guru3d reports that the best feature about Star Wars Galaxies is the characther creation process, lmao.
http://content.guru3d.com/article.php?cat=gamereviews&id=49

I was thinking of buying both swg and planetside with a half year subscription for both.
But now i guess ill just buy planetside and a 1 year subscription.

This is rediculous. I can't believe that this game is still down. Who is in charge of the planning of a release....they should be fired! With the price of the game at or around 50, the free month of game time should not start until you actually get to play!

You all are really misinformed. Do your research... ask multiple people what they think of the beta. Basing your purchases off a person who's played SWG for 10 minutes is not only stupid, but its really perplexing because I don't know what kind of a human being would have the mental capacity to do so. There are many different planets, with thousands of people to meet, and soon, driving vehicles and space ships in space. I think thats a good formula for a fun game. Just because the servers are off to a bad start, that doesn't mean thats how the game is going to be permanently that way. Your commiting a Nationalistic Logical Falacy: Just because something is, doesn't mean it always will be or should be.

I know about 15 or 20 in the beta. They all say it suck
Is that multiple enough for you?

Everyone that complains about SWG being shallow are the people that play MMORPGs just for the sake of levelling and don't intend to use their ****ing imagination and play the game as it is supposed to be played. It's MMO Role Play Game and not MMO Repetitive Levelling Game. There's some board on the net, where game enthusiasts and game developers hang out (Raph Koster, the creative designer of SWG, does also post on this board), and frankly, they're pissing themselves over such retarded reviews like that one from Guru3D. With some research, you will find the URL, I won't hand it out because we don't like publicity.

Eh, not everyone is going to like this game. In fact, a lot of people, like myself, have been following SWG for a very long time. When we finally got the chance to play it, we were sorely disappointed. Sure, it's our fault for having our expectations set so high but whatever. In the case of SWG, the developers have created a virtual sanbox with a few props to keep most people happy. Basically, you just jump in and do your own thing. It's more of a program for online social gatherings (Sims Online) than a game with social extensions (All other MMOs). This is probably why I'm disappointed.

Like I said, it's not for everyone.

#11.2 Tom Servo on 27 Jun 2003 - 16:12
Sure thing not everyone is going to like it, but I've seen a lot of EQ/AC/etc players that are Star Wars fans and wanted to play EQ, but are complaining now because it's not the same ghey level treadmill as they're used. They're actually forced to play the game instead of constantly levelling, and they don't seem to like that.
#12 Kashida on 27 Jun 2003 - 14:32
DAoC 4tehwin!
#13 Spacce on 27 Jun 2003 - 17:24
yeah people mainly bitch because some things were broken still, and you can't just become a jedi or bounty hunter straight off the bat, there's no 1337 loot etc.. Sony wasn't trying to make another EQ.. why would they make a game to have them quit one game for another of their games...

I remember when I started playing a rogue in EQ back in 1998 and nothing worked on a rogue, i played till level 30 and started a druid..

If no one played because of the bugs etc, then in 6 months when you want to play, there will be nothing to play because of lack of funds. I've had two friends who played beta, they even sayed its has some bugs in it, but it didn't stop them from playing the game.
#14 nspeds on 27 Jun 2003 - 18:38
If you say everyone won't like the game, FINE then. But that doesn't mean you all deter others from trying it out. There is a 30 trial that you get w/ galaxies. Since some people like it and some people don't, its kind of hard to infer who on Neowin would/would not like the game.

Saying "this game sucks" is sad, saying that "this game isn't for me" is good. Make your own opinions but realize that your opinions don't necessarely mean that everyone thinks, or should think that way. Let THEM try it out and read some more educated reviews before saying $hit.

Note of interest, Everquest was down for 2 weeks when it came out so don't even start ranting. The game is growing and growing.

An interesting analogy to relate to is that this game is just a seed, it only grows to what the users make of it. If they had made a Star Wars Online Universe the way half the people wanted it, the gameplay would become pretty linear and all the other features such as socialization and a user driven economy etc. would've been driven out. The only way to make a true Star Wars universe exist online is to make it the way right now. Later on we will have smuggling out stuff before star destroyers reach you etc, like I said, the game is constantly growing. This type of sandbox mode is ultimate in the sense of creativity.

Helping people put their opinions in one place,
nd
