Half-Life to Require Steam

It appears that Valve will soon be replacing the WON ID system of user authentication that Half-Life has used since the very beginning with Steam. Here's some quotes from Valve's Erik Johnson yanked from this Steam forum thread:
    - There will no longer be a WonID system, it will be replaced by the SteamID system.
    - When we convert the userbase to Steam, a single WonID will be valid for all of the products.
    - If you're purchased a product from us at retail, you're going to have access to all of our products via Steam.
    - No, you do not have to pay for Steam.
So sometime in the near future, Valve will be releasing an update to Half-Life that will require you to convert your old WonID CD-Key into a SteamID. We asked Mr. Johnson if this meant Steam would be required to play Half-Life online:
    - That is correct, you'll have to have Steam installed to play the most current version of Half-Life.
This is a pretty significant change. While it probably makes sense to replacing the aging WON ID system, the transition over to Steam is bound to be a little bumpy.

The teenage shooters, who each pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, will be held at a state juvenile detention center until they turn 19. The law in Tennessee allows them to remain in the custody of the state Department of Children's Services until they are 19, but no longer.

In written statements, they expressed remorse for their actions.

"I will always hate myself for what I did. I am so sorry," wrote William Buckner.

"I didn't want to hurt anyone," wrote Joshua Buckner. "This will be with me the rest of my life."

The Hamel family filed suit Thursday against Take Two Interactive, the video game maker, said attorney Jack Thompson.

"The industry needs to cough up money so victims and their families can be compensated for their pain," Thompson said. "The shareholders need to know what their games are doing to kids and their families. They need to stop pushing adult rated products to kids. These products are deadly."

Take-Two Interactive declined to comment to Good Morning America about the incident.

- If you're purchased a product from us at retail, you're going to have access to all of our products via Steam.

Does that mean I will never have to buy a valve game again?

Steam replaces the WonID. If you bought the game retail, there won't be any subscription fees to pay. However doesn't that mean that you get all future stuff for free, you get that only if you explicitely subscribe to HL2/Steam.

This is a crock of ****, I hate Steam. It runs like **** on all my machines, crashes every 10 minutes and CS1.6 is just a stupid with its shields. When I run Half-Life mods by themselves they run great, no problems at all. Man this **** pissed me off.

so that means if you get banned by steam say for cheating with halflife you cant play any of their games online. so you either have to wait untill 4 years later when they unban you or you are forced to buy all new games

has someone been caught cheating?
