Besides all the negative news around peer-2-peer software Kazaa there is also some positive news. Game maker Atari is going to sell their latest RPG game, entitled "The Temple of Elemental Evil," via the Kazaa software. People can download the demo (843MB) via the online file sharing network after which the game will be playable for free for six hours. After this time period the user can unlock the full game for US $ 49.95:

The Temple of Elemental Evil ™ is a turn based RPG based on the beloved classic D&D module set in the land of Greyhawk. Like the Baldur’s Gate series on which it is party based, it is developed by Troika games - award winning developer of the highly acclaimed and award winning Arcanum series and Fallout. Temple of Elemental Evil is the first PC game to utilize the new 3.5 Edition D&D Rules and is set in a place considered to be a classic to all that have spent time in the D&D universe, the land of Greyhawk.

Has anyone played this? Is it good?
#7 JoGro123 on 20 Sep 2003 - 18:28
843 MB is the full game, when you load it up without a valid key it defaults to demo, the key unlocks the whole game. The issue of couse is that a keygen or crack will unlock the whole game.

You short sited fools! This is merely a glimpse of what is to come. Companies are trying this type of distribution out. Think steam and whatnot. And besides, game companies know that no matter what medium they choose to distribute the game it will be pirated, so its not like they weren't expecting it to be cracked.

US $49.95??? Their just cuted allot of the middle men but instead of giving us a nicer (lower) price they just put it full price to maximize profits.
Sorry but this just sound the like Atari is trying to rip people (that would like to pay for the game to support the coders/makers/artists) off .
#12.1 plasticparadox on 21 Sep 2003 - 06:30
That's too true. 49.99 is too much for a game without physical media, packaging, paper instructions, and a return policy, I presume.

And of course, there's no resale value to this game. Sounds like Atari needs to tweak it's business model.

what about the game? im not in the mood for a 850MB download , when the games its like ... boring, not even if its free
#15 XT. on 21 Sep 2003 - 19:28
I downloaded it. It reminds me a ton of Baldur's Gate, it's good so far. If you liked BG2 or Diablo II, this is a good game for you. Download it, don't buy it though... you'll see keygens eventually, (and yeah, it's all over edonkey, lol sharereactor)
