Art director Hideo Minaba, and character designer Akihiko Yoshida discuss Square Enix's upcoming RPG.

TOKYO--The latest issue of Famitsu magazine features an interview with Final Fantasy XII character designer Akihiko Yoshida and art director Hideo Minaba. Yoshida, who worked on Final Fantasy Tactics, and Minaba, a series veteran since 1992's Final Fantasy V, revealed more details about Square Enix's eagerly awaited role-playing game. An English translation of the interview is below:

Q: When did the development on FFXII begin?

Minaba: Quite some time ago. In the beginning, we started out trying to make a game for PlayOnline, since Matsuno [the director] was involved in that project. It was a really small project, where we were thinking of producing one game in about half a year's time. Yoshida was doing the background artwork and I was doing the character designs for the fun of it. Before we realized it, it was a full-time project.

Yoshida: That's kind of how the game began, but it's not really the official beginning of FFXII's development launch.

Q: We previously heard from Matsuno that Ashe was modeled on a Frenchwoman's bone structure.

Pretty dry interview, but informative nonetheless. Thanks!

EDIT: FlishFun, don't you swear that it's Golbez in the FF12 logo?? It sure bloody looks like him....from FF4 (ff2 us)

Yeah, I've thought that some too (based on the artwork of Golbez from FFIV). All I know is I can't wait to get my hands on this game.

I agree, that definitely looks like Golbez. If you have the PSX version it looks like the CGI Golbez during movie scenes.

Well, all I can say is this:

I want Final Fantasy X-2 and FF11 first. The sooner Square start taking this corner of the world more seriously and stop taking 6 - 8 months to convert / release games in PAL, the sooner I will be happy. There's been no news on FF11 for Europe in quite some time. Apparently they are concerned with the PS2's broadband popularity over here, but are they forgetting the PC version? :p

I live in the UK and am annoyed at the growing "amnesia" big software houses tend to have with Europe. First no "Resident Evil: Outbreak" (the online one) news for us, now this. Hrm...

Mmmm Final Fantasy...

I don't know if I should be glad I'm in America or wish I was in Japan.
