Official Sony concept, or talented fake?

A picture purporting to be concept art of Sony's next-generation console, the PlayStation 3, has been circulated on the Internet, showing a sleek silver console with a slot-loading DVD drive.

So, is this an early glimpse of the future of console entertainment? We have our doubts, since although we've been unable to confirm where the image originated, it doesn't appear to have been officially released by Sony - unlike last month's PSP concept images, which appeared in a presentation given by SCE boss Ken Kutaragi.

Indeed, a highly placed source within Sony stated that he'd never seen the concept design shown in the image before - although he did concede that it "could be something Japan cooked up and hasn't shown us," he was adamant that he thought it highly unlikely that the image originated from Sony.

So what we're left with, perhaps unsurprisingly, is a very clever and well-implemented mock-up of the forthcoming console, which probably bears no resemblance to the final product. It does look nice though, doesn't it?

I believe it's fake. Look at "SONY" on the front. It appears to be on a slightly different curvature than the surface. Also, I don't think they'd rehash the PS2 logo with a "3" instead.

Good attempt though.

Of COURSE it's FAKE!

It's a friggin "CONCEPT IMAGE" (or did you not RTFA?)

It is not a photo of an actual working model because the console does not exist yet.

Man....

It's not a Sony "concept" anyway, doesn't anyone read comments...

lol bah to all you sony people jk

I am much more curious of the XboX and Gamecube replacement concepts. Those are the only two systems that care to follow. It looks like M$ will as always try to take over the world with its next system and Nintendo will try to be the small guy again. All 3 will at least use the IBM chip co-designed by motorolla and Apple, meaning we are going to have well designed speedy gaming. I just wonder what gates has in store for us, Maybe a TiVo? Maybe?

...So is the mock-up authentic? Unfortunately, the answer is most definitely "no." The avid next-console-watchers at PS3 Insider tracked down the source of the now-infamous image, a 23-year old designer named Julien Vanhoenacker. Vanhoenacker, who goes also by the handle Kanex, is completely unaffiliated with Sony, and created the image back in June as part of the portfolio for his Lille, France-based studio. However, it wasn't until this past week that the image started getting serious attention. No word yet on whether the image has landed Vanhoenacker any work...

There you have it! It's confirmed to be fake but that artist's great! It looks so real and cool!
