The next chapter in 3D Realms' sassy shooter franchise won't be ready until Q4 2004 at the earliest.

When 3D Realms decided on the title "Duke Nukem Forever," most gamers probably didn't realize they were actually describing its development time. First announced in 1997, the seven-year-old shooter franchise's next installment may now not be released until 2005. The bad news came straight from Jeffrey Lapin, CEO of Take Two Interactive, parent of Gathering Games, Duke Nukem Forever's publisher. When pressed on the subject by an analyst in a conference call today, Lapin said, "I had a recent conversation with [Duke Nukem Forever's] developer, and they expect the game to be completed sometime at the end of '04 or the beginning of '05."

Two HD DVD format specifications are currently being promoted for standardisation. One is the ROM disc with 15GB of storage capacity on a single layer and 30GB on dual-layer media, and the other is a rewritable disc with 20GB of storage capacity. In November, the DVD Forum's steering committee approved the proposed HD DVD-ROM format in version 0.9.

Have you ever heard the old adage that a thousand monkeys sitting at a thousand typewriters for a thousand years would eventually produce all the works of Shakespeare? 3D Realms has... they appear to be using it as a development philosophy.

This is a BattleCruiser 3000AD moment - a vapourware game that is delayed again and again until SOMETHING is finally shoved out the door only to fail miserably the second it does. I predict a HUGE flop in DNF for 3D Realms.

Quote this comment #26.3 Posted by knightryderrwn on 20 Dec 2003 - 23:52
Yes, reaaheellyyy. Think about it - game developers closing, stores threatening to pull PC games off their shelves, game release dates slipping to infinity.....doesn't bode well.

Besides that, there's this simple comparison:

Consoles:

Turn console on, insert game, press "Start," and play

PC's:

Download all necessary patches
Ensure graphics & sound card drivers are up-to-date
Ensure DirectX is latest version
Ensure system has enough memory and CPU power to run the game

And, with console games becoming almost as vivid and realistic as PC games, but without the headaches, it's no wonder...

The worst thing is that by the time they release it they will have lost a large percentage of the gaming community to age! I mean think about it, Duke Nukem 3D was released in 1995 or somewhere there abouts and was quickly surpased by Quake. The majority of gamers that are likley to play Duke Nukem Forever are probably 15 - 20 year olds. These people would have been 5 and 10 years old respectively when Duke 3D was released. Are they really going to remember Duke 3D? Will they care there is a new one? Sure Duke was cool back then...

The gamers that played Duke back then assuming the same age group, 15 - 20 year olds. Will be 25 - 30 by the time Duke nukem Forever is release (if) a lot of those people have no doubt moved on and are no longer as interested in PC games. There is no way that Duke nukem Forever will have anywhere near the same impact that it would have in 1997. I say give up 3D Relams, move on.

Good point. I thought Duke 3D was awesome when it first came out, but it was behind technology-wise even then (games going to true 3D - not just fancy textures). "I ain't afraid of no Quake!" -- Ya, well, they should have been.

Part of the reason I was into Duke 3D was b/c I played Duke Nukem 1 and 2. Although I guess we have to remember that sex sells - especially to 15-20 year olds so who knows.
Quote this comment #31.4 Posted by mr_da3m0n on 19 Dec 2003 - 13:25
I used to love the game. It had a lot of attractive things that were not into quake, even if quake was boastinig the big 3d models and full 3d engine, Duke 3d a few really cool things that stood out.

* Shells ejecting of guns when you fired. Yes no big deal, but I was really into that.
* Voice (Where would the world be without those one liners, I ask you?)
* Bullet marks on walls
* Interaction with the environnement
* MIRRORS! I had dreamed of a FPS with mirrors all my life.
* Jetpack! JETPACK!
* The EASIEST yet BEST BSP based Map Editor EVER. Ken Silverman's BUILD rocks.
Quote this comment #31.5 Posted by nic on 19 Dec 2003 - 16:18
I agree mr_da3m0n. Duke 3d had a lot of things going for it that quake didn't, esspecially the Map Editor. I put together about 4 maps that made it to one of those expansion CDs (who's map didn't?).

Quake won out for its multi-player options, esspecially when quakeworld came out and all the delicious mods. But I remember playing Duke 3d deathmatches on the first map (that was the best one), and setting up all kinds of traps and what have you. Playing "King of the Arcade" was a blast. It really was a fun game.

As for Duke Nuken Forever: they should have never announced it until they were like 3 months from a final. If I were 3d Realms i wouldn't let any news surface about this title, esspecially THIS news. This is just embarressing.

I was thinking of the EXACT SAME sentence when I typed up "voice" above!

Gotta love his raspy voice!

And I also made a few maps myself that ended up on a expansion CDs... Two on Duke X-Treme and one on.. uh... that map pack that had the cute little selector. Of course those expansions kinda sucked, they had alot of maps like "My House!" and "square_that_blinks_with_boss_in_middle" and an obscene overuse of sector effector 0,25 (or was it 0,22? low tags and hi tags... oh memories...)

The frightening thing about the whole thing is that 3d Realms never did their own engine for DNF, they have switched engine three times or more. I just think that there's been so much money poured into the title and development team that they can't call it a day and quit, they need to get some of it back.

What I can't understand is what they've been doing these past 7 years... I've seen recent job-offerings (level editors, texture painters etc.) which makes me suspect they've reconstructed the team and scrapped most parts of the game to start over again since they realized the idea wasn't good enough.

Leave Romero's baby alone! DNF started about the same time as Diakatana, and still to this day, hasn't been finnished. Keep in mind also that Ion Storm was going through a bad time, at least Diakatana was released, and I play it sometimes still.

But seriously, DNF has been delayed so much, I've basically forgotten about it. I remember seeing a preview of it back in a 1997 PC Format Gold, where it was looking (at the time) on par with other to be released games, like the afore-mentioned Diakatana, Half-Life, SiN, and Prey, and many, many other games that flopped, or were released low key and forgotten about. But seeing a completely different set of DNF screenshots in 2000, and another set in 2001, It seems like they're redoing everything from scratch every year.

Duke Nukem Forever? Duke Nukem Never? You decide.
Quote this comment #37.2 Posted by Chreo on 20 Dec 2003 - 11:49
By this you imply that Daikatana was playable just because it was released... which I beg to differ.
Releasing something unplayable is far worse than delaying and later release something that rocks because I would hesitate to play another game from that studio. It takes years to build a good reputation and only a few studios have that good a reputation and I'd say Blizzard is the no 1 on that list. I can say that I would not hesitate to pick up a game at the store that has a Blizzard sticker on it and know that I get a good gaming experience... but if they ever release game even one 10th as sucky as the Daikatana-poo then that feeling would be gone in an instant.

I'd rather take Duke Nukem Never than a premature Duke Nukem Forever that is crap.

Come to think of it, this it the first time I've ever heard something from "official" sources that states a "releasedate" (or releasequarter). Which is a sign of something being released at long last. But it better 0wn...

the character, Duke is such a terrible 90's action hero cliche'. People these days just don't go for the Street fighter look anymore. If it was a movie, I'm sure Van dam (spelling) would play the part.

They should invent a more realistic, everyday character, without a terrible Pun name. Like Norman Fleeman or something.

He was 'cool' once, and never will be again. That is as cool as you could get in the mid 90's. Never mind, you guys might just develop something worth using as a coaster.

LOL I remember that one! They had a few early screen shots and talked about their "Detail Mesh" system where if you were up close, models were drawn with more polygons but the further you got, it would drop a few, improving performance and the drop in polys was invisible to the player because of the distance. They talked about voice communication and having a Command, in charge of their team... lol those were the days!

I accepted Duke Nukem Forever as abandonware long ago. In 1999, I would of gone running to the store to buy it. Now, I frankly don't give a hoot. It could be released for Star Trek's Holodeck, but would not have the same impact as a 1999 release would of been. Video games do not have the same impact on me as they used to.

For some strange reason, this whole issue reminds me of the old story "The boy who cried wolf". They announce a date, people come running only to find it isn't there and delayed. When the wolf (Duke Nukem Forever) does appear, who is really going to come running? Not me.

Forget trying to explain this to gamers. I hope they have a REALLY hard time trying to explain it to the shareholders. Trying to make a game 'perfect' doesn't work. Max Payne, Quake 3, GTA 3 have all had some issues but they're some of the best selling games ever.

Don't worry people, it's taking a long time because it's gonna be a breakthrough game where you go back in time and play in 2D with 256 colours. You'll have a selection of two guns which are only distinguishable by an out of place pixel and Duke Nukems running animations will contain a massive 3 frames.
