In a market dominated by sluggishly-evolving console systems, a select few has stopped and thought to themselves, “How can I improve my gaming experience, and how can I make it more unique and entertaining?” The answer is simply - Modchips. That’s right, those tiny circuit boards you commonly see on online gaming stores - it’s that extra dark option you force to the back of your mind due to the immense confusion and mystery surrounding it.

In the excited hands of the TweakTown Canadian Labs today, is a brand-new Microsoft Xbox pre-modified with a top-of-the-line modchip and a larger-capacity harddrive. In this article, we plan to demonstrate to our readers the benefits, downsides, precautions and necessities surrounding the installation of a modchip and similar console modifications.

Kindly sampled from one of the professional pre-modified console store on the ‘net, Xbox Mod Chips, our Lab’s new Xbox has been put through the most rigorous testing and analyzing phase we have ever conducted. In the past few days, our excitement has continued as we replaced the Xbox’s harddrive, installed dual BIOSes, two operating systems, then even FTP’d into the Xbox in order to transfer over our MP3’s and music videos, before we installed the Xbox Media Player- WHAT?! Don’t be overwhelmed, just yet, as we’ll take a first-hand look at every single one of the points I have just mentioned.

I've had a modded xbox for about a year and a half now. I can't live without it Xbox Media Player is simply amazing (I haven't found anything that it can't play, besides newer RealMedia files). I can install games I own on the hard drive and start them with a click. I can use emulators which render nearly all of the systems I own obselete. I can download save games that unlock everything in games directly from my Avalaunch Dashboard. I also have Gentoo Linux installed, which I can ssh and control remote desktop with for coding. I HIGHLY recommend looking into modding an xbox. Check www.xbox-scene.com. Xecuter 2.3 chips are fantastic. Don't worry, it's all legal (unless using an illegal BIOS and copying games).

It is not legal at all. You are paying to use the xbox the way in which it was sold, any modification of it, as you have stated, it totally illegal.
#2.2 quintesse on 14 Jan 2004 - 14:05
Depends on where you live, as far as I know according to Australian law for example it is perfectly legal (sony lost the court case about PS mods being illegal).
#2.3 LiGhTfast on 14 Jan 2004 - 18:35
Nope, its your property... if you use a legal bios and legal software on it your not breaking any laws...
#2.4 eXpired on 14 Jan 2004 - 18:41
It IS legal to run the Cromwell BIOS, which is NOT made with ANY M$ code or compiler to run Linux. It's your hardware. I'll be damned if someone is going to tell me I can't take screws apart without the FBI coming in and giving me an anal probe. These modifications were performed for free at many tech shows for installing Linux. Do you think they would offer this service for free at a public trade show if it were illegal? Nope.

You don't even need to spend the money on a modchip, you can softmod them using certain exploits (I believe this is as legal as adding a modchip). I have to agree, XBMP is really cool and I love all the emulators that you can use, this is definetly worth looking into. Its a cool network box for under $200.
#6.1 andrewfee on 14 Jan 2004 - 06:18
You're right, it is "as legal" as adding a modchip, in that it's totally illegal.

I can't believe I'm seeing this posted on Neowin of all places with all the involvment it has with MS.
#6.2 Jasco on 14 Jan 2004 - 07:18
aaaaawwwww, poor you
#6.3 cerbero on 14 Jan 2004 - 08:51
It's only illegal in the US though. At least, the DMCA is just a US law.
#6.4 Suddenly_Dead on 15 Jan 2004 - 04:27
I'm not entirely sure what would be illegal about it, other than the American's DMCA. Oh yes, copyrighted code in the BIOS's and most programs might do it. (Xbox Linux and the cromwell BIOS would be fully legal, other than in the States of course)

But really, does that matter? Is anyone going to break down your door because you play emulators and roms of really old games?

If you do pirate xbox games, that's another story, and has moral and ethical issues as well. However, I see nothing wrong with XBMP and emulators and such. I've never been tempted to pirate, and I'm not taking anything from Microsoft that cost them money. I still buy my fair share of games.

Hey do you need a dvd burner to back up games or can you fit them on miltiple cds and still play them?
#9.1 saab74 on 14 Jan 2004 - 10:53
you can do anything u like..copy games onto HD, or copy games on DVD or 2 CDs, this thing is so much fun!! wait for the PS2 emulator, and a way we go!!!
#9.2 elatedmedia on 14 Jan 2004 - 17:48
I highly doubt you are going to see a PS2 emulator on the Xbox.. PS1 emulation on the Xbox is terrible at best.
#9.3 LiGhTfast on 14 Jan 2004 - 18:39
Hmm i play final fantasy 7 and gta fine, maybe you have a old version
#10 Necro on 14 Jan 2004 - 13:15
I fell sorry for you yanks.
No, I really do, and not in a condescending way either. I truly feel that it must be terrible to live in a country where all copyright law is designed to protect Big Business. As the recent case with "DVD" Jon Lech Johansen demonstrates, consumers are still protected in Norway. I have been meaning to talk to my dealer 'bout getting my xbox modded, but i haven't gotten around to it yet...
#11 ProfessorX on 14 Jan 2004 - 16:14
makes me mod my XBOX. im just waiting for the X3 modchip
#12 Ren@ud on 14 Jan 2004 - 18:36
andrew : when I BUY something, it is MY CHOICE, and MY CHOICE ONLY, to do whatever I want to do with it. MS doesn't have any fscking right to sue me over my belongings.
#13 LiGhTfast on 14 Jan 2004 - 18:37
Xbox media center kicks ass, can't live without it... no more watching xvid etc on a monitor just use a 32" widescreen tv and a xbox thats quiter than a pc
