Epic's Tim Sweeney says network code changes will prevent backwards compatibility.

Having already suffered through a six-month delay, gamers awaiting Unreal Tournament 2004 are apparently in store for another unpleasant surprise. In an e-mail sent to Unreal Tournament mod authors yesterday, Epic MegaGames founder/president Tim Sweeney revealed that UT 2004 will not be network compatible with Unreal Tournament 2003. "We had initially planned to support that," said Sweeney, "but the network code has changed so much in order to reduce bandwidth, support vehicles, and increase performance, that we couldn't keep the two games network-compatible." Sweeney confirmed the e-mail's authenticity to GameSpot earlier today.

ok? so what

will this game keep the same performance as ut2003?
Quote this comment #2.1 Posted by quintesse on 21 Jan 2004 - 10:02
I read soomwhere that the performance had indeed improved.... but because the levels are now bigger with more detail the net effect is zero.

Couldn't they just release a patch that would update the netcode of UT2003?
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #4 Posted by tcghost on 21 Jan 2004 - 00:48
they could, but that would mean less people will buy UT2004...

I dont even know why they were pushing for a 2004 anyway...why not just wait till 2005 or 06 so they could put out something thats BETTER than what they previously put out...give them some time to work up something cool you know? Bsides, if its gonna be competing with doom3 and hl2 its gonna have to be REALLY good

EDIT: Hah, you know I take that back, it doesnt even have to be better than HL2 or doom3, it just has to get released because it doesnt look like those other 2 are EVER coming out

I will be buying 2004 any way I didnt buy 2003 until I had to, when they locked out the keygens, but i think ile just get 2004 from the start, its a great game and they deserve paying for it

I purchased UT2k3 and I really enjoyed it. Although I have so many other games at this point that UT doens't get much play time. Judging from the UT2k4 gameplay video's that I've seen, it looks very promising. I'm definitely looking forward to it's release.

Me too, but is there any info on its release date?

I have liked UT1 and UT2K3. I'm sure I willl enjoy this version as well. It's the only game that gets any real play time on my computer. I had full intentions of buying UT2k4 anyways so this news doesn't phase me at all.

People don't foget that owner's of Unreal Tournament 2003 will be able to get the new game at a discounted price. So you aren't getting "ripped off", all the new maps and features and everything will be well worth the money.
Quote this comment #20.1 Posted by Caelamia on 24 Jan 2004 - 13:58
Does anyone actually know how this discount thing will work? I doubt it will be a "take your copy of 2k3 into a games shop and get 20% off". All sorts of implications there for letting people borrow your copy and whatever. I really, really hope they do not expect people to have kept their receipts / proofs of purchase after this long. Because there will be a whole lot of people having to pay full price when they should have a discount, including me.

I don't see how they can do this in a way that will be easy and fair to everyone. Maybe they will just end up phasing this offer out, or hoping people will forget about it. Living in the UK, I am even more skeptical I will get the game at a reduced price.
