Democratic presidential hopeful Joseph Lieberman describes Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto series as horrendous during a forum at Dartmouth College.

According to a recent Reuters report, Democratic presidential hopeful Joseph Lieberman launched an attack on the Grand Theft Auto games during a women's forum at Dartmouth College yesterday. The Connecticut senator, who led the fight in Congress against excessive sex and violence in the entertainment industry, described Grand Theft Auto as "horrendous" and said that Rockstar Games should be more responsible. "The player is rewarded for attacking a woman, pushing her to the ground, kicking her repeatedly and then ultimately killing her, shooting her over and over again," said Lieberman. "I call on the entertainment companies--they've got a right to do that, but they have a responsibility not to do it if we want to raise the next generation of our sons to treat women with respect."

Sadler said the company expects DRAM unit shipments would increase as much as 18 percent in 2004, on top of an 11 percent rise in the prior year while content growth would be in the range of 30 to 50 percent driven by a resurgence in the corporate market.

Said Sadler, "2003 was a good year for memory content due to [Microsoft] Windows XP deployment, broadband demand and strong consumer PC sales but we are also beginning to see an increase from the business market."

Another strong growth area for memory suppliers is the wireless handset market where a combination of huge volume — more than 500 million units per year #151; and rising memory content, which Sadler puts at 16 Mb per phone today, is raising optimism in the industry.

"You've got memory growth, camera phone growth and high number," Sadler said. "Cellphones will undoubtedly be the key growth in future."

In his own presentation at the conference, Bill Stover, Micron's vice president and chief financial officer, said the company's capital expenditure would increase in 2004 to a range of $1.3 billion to $1.6 billion from approximately $1.1 billion in 2003.

Stover estimated total global DRAM capital expenditures rose to $6 billion in 2003 from $5 billion in 2002. Capital expenditure in the industry has fallen from as high as $20 billion 1996 and $9 billion at the height of the last industry expansion in 2000.

What does he mean by "an then ultimately killing her." If you are going to interact with a sprite in that game all you can do is shoot kick punch ect. Rockstar makes to much money on the games they won't change them. There is really no reason for him to be talking about it anyway

But she wanted to charge me for a bj!!! lol People need to realize that there are a lot of factors that f up someones mind. Besides, parents are to blame. They should use some logic when purchasing games for their kids.

You don't get any more for beating a woman than you get for beating a man - it's all about equal opportunities. Lieberman obviously has no idea what he's talking about, and it obviously just trying to pander to angry conservatives that aren't quite sure what they're angry about any more. Thank god Lieberman doesn't have a hope in hell of being the Democrats' presidential candidate, we need to kick Bush's ass out, and not replace him with another clueless moron.

First of all it's Dartmouth College, I'd be surprised if anyone there has played the game let alone play any video games, bunch of stuck up, money grubbin pansies. Leiberman needs to take that 10' dil*o out of his a$$ and buck up. Quit crying about video games you political whore! They have nothing else to attack so they attack what's popular in hopes of attracting some attention, reguardless of it being good or bad. Well congrats Mr. Leiberman, you got my attention, and because of your lame comment on GTA/Rockstar Studio's I'm going to go keep buying and supporting them.

[er, sorry lol I hate politics ]

Only in US.

I bet if there was a game that let you grow flowers (maybe there's one actually) by whatever means, sooner or later some smart ass politician came up yelling out that the game provokes people growing weed or something.

Gee.. get a friggen life and focus on real problems in the world and not how one can kick someone in a virtual world.

Politician are the lowest form of humans that belong in the gutter. And Lieberman says a game like GTA is bad, but its ok for him and other politicians do bend over for any lobyiest with some money to donate.

The day there is an honest politician is the day I will quit playing GTA and other violent games. I am going to fantasize about killing people now since that is all my brain can think of after playing GTA.

The headline of this article should read...

"Presidential hopeful realizes there is not much hope left, jumps on the "I am going to attack this GTA Video Game since it is "Safe" and Has already been done 100 times and it will make me look cool" bandwagon."

Everyone watch Joseph Lieberman spend all his money on a presidential campagin he will never win...

#12 netstarman on 26 Jan 2004 - 18:04
He has no right to judge a video game , I bet he hasnt even seen or played the game. He only says that garbage to boost his votes with the hard nose liberals who hate video games. "IT'S" the parents that need need to watch what there kids play and buy, Not the game makers. The game makers are not the baby sitters, but only make games for kids when the parents see fit that its the right games for them . Joseph Lieberman needs to do his homework before he comes out bitching about things he has no idea on what there about. Us gamers understand what the games are all about in terms of gameplay, violence, quality of the game, ratings of the game. I dont think i heard of kids going on a rampage trying to take over a country with a ice ray gun, getting into there floating ship shooting everyone with a laser-pulsar gun.

Personally I can't stand the games. Not because of their style or anything, I just didn't get on with them.

This sort of thing annoys me though. Like many others have said; if the kids go out killing people then they're retarted anyway.
I'm not in America but I wish we in the UK brought back the death penalty, preferably public hanging. Then we could just sentence all these stupid kids to death and be done with it. Same with safety labels. Remove them and we'll rid ourselves of the morons that, for example, don't see the danger in placing their head in a plastic bag and tying it up preventing themselves breathing.

Anyone with me or am I just gonna be subjected to meta-flaming?
#19.1 Caelamia on 27 Jan 2004 - 00:40
LOL

I read what you posted and it reminded me of the label I saw on a microwave meal yesterday: "Caution. Will be hot when removed from microwave." Well, yeah. Isn't that the whole point?

No, I love the games. They make me laugh so much. It's not as if it's even that realistic, and the games do carry an 18 certificate. They have that for a reason, but most parents don't care about giving these games to their kids. My 10 year old cousin has "GTA: VC" and I told my aunt and uncle not to buy it for him, but, well...

The politicians should get a real job. Especially here in the England where they do nothing of great importance, other than taking all of our money for taxes and having nothing to show for it.
#20 Lingwo on 26 Jan 2004 - 23:44
Let people decide what they want to play.
The game has an 18 rating therefore informing people its going to be pretty graphic, if you ban games that are violent etc whats the point in age rating systems.
#21 IncomT65 on 27 Jan 2004 - 02:51
old, it's far from being the first time Liebermann goes against video games
#22 Ji@nBing on 27 Jan 2004 - 03:20
he's just angry cuz he sucks at it and can't even beat the first mission

I know how to make video games acceptable to politicians: Simulate real life politics!

Drugs, bribes, sex scandals, shady/illegal business deals, making promises you can't keep, invading other countries...... all on the road to diplomacy! Oh, the joy! Actually, this might be more fun than GTA3!

BTW - It sounds like Lieberman plays GTA3 (He probably likes it but won't admit it). He's trying to get the
votes from women's rights groups with this rant. He obviously makes a point, but Mario is violent too, you still kill "bad guys" == living things (in the context of the game).
#23.1 ~Greeno~ on 27 Jan 2004 - 12:46
sounds abit like GTA3 to me anyway
#24 Slaughter on 27 Jan 2004 - 05:08
Well one thing people are good at doing these days and that's blaming other people for there own stupid, ****ed up mistakes that they can't even fix. Politicans do it all the time.
#25 Fanon on 27 Jan 2004 - 14:17
What responsible parent lets their child play/own this game? It is rated M for a reason. This is just another excuse to try to bloat government to govern what we do/do not play. Bleh.
(1 reply) #26 Valkyre on 27 Jan 2004 - 17:37
If it wasn't GTA it would be something else. Every polititian needs something to attack.
#26.1 Chouzan on 28 Jan 2004 - 01:57
Indeed, but Joseph Lieberman has been assaulting violent gaming for nearly a decade, Grand Theft Auto in particular.

Not that this is important, Dean remains the man of the hour.
