Microsoft's Robbie Bach will reportedly discuss next-gen software strategy at the San Jose developer's summit.

The consensus in the industry is that the Xbox Next probably won't be released until 2005--at the earliest. However, it looks like attendees of the 2004 Game Developer's Conference might get a sneak peak at the next-generation console's games in two and a half weeks. Bloomberg quoted Microsoft Japan's Asako Miyata as saying that Chief Xbox Officer Robbie Bach will appear at the San Jose, California, conference on March 24. According to Miyata, Bach will outline Microsoft's software strategy for the Xbox Next by discussing games that will run on the console and revealing some technical aspects about the console's format.

The 32 bit version supports Drag&Drop from and to explorer/desktop, delete to the recycle bin, and Explorer style context menus/property sheets. FTP servers on the Internet can be accessed like local drives.A configurable directory hotlist (bookmarks) and history list make directory navigation easier.

The sync function allows to synchronize two complete directory trees, and the compare function shows the difference of two binary or text files highlighted side by side. The new parallel port connection works between any combination of Windows 95/98/ME, Windows NT 4, Windows 2000/XP, Windows 3.1 and even DOS through a separate server.

NOTE: The update is still free for all registered users (also of Windows Commander)

What's New in This Release:

  • Fixed: With file panels above each other, the mouse wheel may have scrolled the wrong window
  • Fixed: Ctrl+Q on drive in "My Computer" turned off quick view permanently

Even if XBOX Next cant play Current XBOX games, there will probably be ports at a very cheap price, with better GFX or something, its like two years away, you might not even like the games then.

But if XBOX Next is not backward compatible, developpers won't dare putting out new games for normal XBOX, as they know people will more and more likely wait for the Next.

Yeah good point. But for all you PS2 owners, like my self, how many of you actually still play any of the PSOne games on a regular basis if at all?

The neXtBOX will run old games in an emulation mode.
WE know that the CPu's (dual) are not x86 based. So They will have to emulate in order to play.

You make that sound as if you know thats what is going to happen, and yet you don't.

They have not released anything saying if they will run or not, the bottom line is no one knows right now.

Now... more than likely they will NOT run older games, especially games like Doom III (Probably the only game I would care about). It will never see it's way onto running on the new Xbox unless it is completely remade. If you read this months GamePro, Doom III is being developed on the Xbox using many of the specific features that the nvidia graphics chip provides.

Doom III isn't the only game to do this. Just about all Xbox games are built using certain functions specific to their hardware. Thats how they can make them run well. Computer games have to be made to run on anything, Xbox games just have to run on the Xbox, so they aren't made with other systems in mind.

In my opinion, I HOPE they don't run current Xbox games, if they do, it would mean they would have to waste valuable space in the new system for the compatibility. I would rather them just make a completely new system that is hundreds times better than the current.

From what stats are saying right now, the new Xbox will be faster than most people's PCs. The power these things will have is incredible, and I am willing to bet that you wouldn't even want to run your older games on it. The new games will look and run much much much better, so I say lets keep our efforts on the new project, and not trying to support an older project.

What about the HDD? Xbox Next isn't gonna have one, so what about the games that cache thier data on the HDD for quicker access etc?...so I think even if Xbox Next is backwards compatible it can't be 100% compatible, cause of that...either that or they will "fool" the game into thinking there is a HDD and save the cache to a memory unit or something I guess..anyway that's my 2 cents

It will make microsoft loose even more money, either way.

Time to get a real console. PS3 or GC2
