Atari announced a new game in the Test Drive series today, a set of racers whose history stretches all the way back to 1987. The new game goes by the name of Test Drive: Eve of Destruction and promises to take races to the extreme.

"Test Drive: Eve of Destruction captures the heart and soul of what gamers want in an action-racing game - speed, thrills and hair-raising crashes," said Nancy MacIntyre, Vice President of Marketing for Atari's Beverly Studios. "Monster Games, the developer of NASCAR: Dirt to Daytona, has done a great job translating their realistic racing physics to this brand new evolution of the popular Test Drive brand."

There are 25 events in Eve of Destruction, with elements of racing and demolition mixed together. One mode is Demo Derby, where the last car standing wins. Another one, named Gauntlet, lets players climb behind the wheel of a hearse to try to finish a a set number of laps while the rest of the field attempts to stop them. Quite bizarre sounding is the Trailer Race mode, a new racing event where players compete while towing various types of trailers, trying to finish the race with something resembling a trailer still attached.

30 custom vehicles are available and a multiplayer split-screen mode allows races for up to four players. Test Drive: Eve of Destruction ships this fall for the PlayStation 2.

Test Drive was always cool, but never good enough to be the best. Hopefully, this time around it can give NFS a run for it's money.

Hell, remember The Duel: Test Drive II on the Amiga? That was great!

The sad thing is, the original developer of Test Drive and Test Drive II is long gone; they're EA Vancouver now. They (Distinctive Software Inc.) left Broderbund and went on to make the first 3 Need for Speed games for EA before being transferred to EA Sports. They made the SSX series too.

Ah well, with the news of NFS Underground 2 and a new Carmageddon, the more racing games on the market, the better, I say.

I used to play Test Drive on my 286. It had like four cars and you had to get to a petrol station in the best time possible. It had cops and everything... classic.

the "Test Drive" for the PC, the last release in the series (?), was incredibly bad.. i mean, un-****ing-believably bad.. the controls, graphics, bugs, presentation, fun (or lack there of)...... i repent every second it took me to download that POS.. Test Drive games aren't even worth pirating..

After Test Drive 4 this series just started getting worse and worse; Test Drive 6 is one of the worst racing games I have ever tried to play, and 5 wasn't much better. I don't have much hope for this one either. It will probably go straight to the bargain bin at Big Lots, next to the Deer Hunter games.

With MGI (Viper Racing) developing this title, it might be pretty good.
