The name's Agent, Rogue Agent. Hmmm, doesn't have quite the same ring, does it?

Electronic Arts have released a slew of new details of their new James Bond game - in which you don't actually play as 007 himself. First-person shooter GoldenEye: Rogue Agent instead sees you play as - yes - a rogue agent, dismissed from MI6 for being a rather brutal chap. Not one to miss an opportunity, Auric Goldfinger (the guy from the film) hires you as his enforcer. As such, you become involved in Goldfinger's spat with Dr No and subsequently lose an eye to the good doctor.

Now here's the, ahem, clever bit. Goldfinger's techies create a golden-hued synthetic replacement for your ocular cavity. Thus, you are now known as (wait for it) GoldenEye. Honestly, you don't know whether to groan out loud or hit the floor in a convulsive belly-laugh. However, being the professionals that we are, we continue...

We all know it'll suck, yet every EA fanboy and old-time Goldeneye fan will eat it up and it'll sell millions purely because it's got the name in it. In other words we'll see more sequels pumped out year after year (maybe even less than a year) because it's what EA love to do. It's quite sad that they're ruining the games industry - the more they pump out low quality crap, the less developers will think they need to try new things, so we'll be stuck in a rut for decades untill the average joe-gamer realise there's more to the gaming world than EA!

Yeah people will buy it.

If it gets good reviews, I may even buy it.

The set up for the story is just too rubbish.

Dwayne from EA : "hmmmm..... must make a new goldeneye game"

Dirk from EA : "Yeah, but we can't just copy the N64 version"

Dwayne : "Nah, we'll just copy the important part, the name, and just put a mod of Nightfire on the disk"

Dirk : "oh yeah, no one bought that, so they'll never know"

Dwayne : "Want some cheetos......."

Wow what a stupid way to manipulate people, by making them think it is going to be one of the greatest classics of gaming.

jmole is right...there is manipulating going on...but it's not on the part of EA...it's on the part of the article's author.

See, there was a post on Neowin about two weeks ago with the same information. There was going to be a Goldeneye sequel in which you played a rogue agent that has a bionic golden eye of sorts. You work for Goldfinger against Dr No.

Funny though, cuz no one was yelling "cheese!" or "this'll suck!" or "how stupid!". People simply discussed the possibilities of a sequel to a great game. There was no jokes or dumb comments. I wonder why?

Oh wait, I know. The first story simple presented the facts. This schmuck, however has pulled you all in, hook line and sinker. He mocks the game, so you mock the game. Talk about mob mentality.

in many cases i would agree that a mob mentality lives strongly within the neowin community. but in this case. mob or no, people are right to be angry about the situation and the manipulation. its marketing bull**** and has nothing to do with the author of this article. he just see's it as plain as we do. the game has NOTHING to do with the original goldeneye, its simply cashing in on the name. it is not a sequel.
#9 lunamonkey on 06 May 2004 - 18:07
Yeah, let's join a mob too.

Serously though Jack, the original story didn't describe GoldenEye part as deeply. Which happens to be totally stupid.

It may have mentioned the goldeneye being bionic, but not the stupid reason for it.

Eh tarnishing a classic, imo.
