2 employees killed in Shanghai Internet cafe

Customers at an Internet cafe in Shanghai allegedly stabbed to death two employees after an argument over computer usage, local newspapers reported Monday.

The fight broke out around 1 a.m. local time on Sunday after a cafe employee told several customers they would have to buy membership cards if they wanted to stay overnight. Such venues often offer lower nighttime access rates to cater to computer game enthusiasts.

Another employee attempted to mediate the dispute, but about 10 men drew knives and chased the pair into a bathroom where they stabbed them to death, the reports said.

Chinese critics have repeatedly attacked Internet cafes for providing access to websites focused on pornography, gambling and criticism of the Communist party, as well as being havens for school dropouts and young people addicted to online games.

Thousands of cafes were closed and rules were tightened after a pair of teenagers set fire to an Internet cafe in Beijing in June 2002 after a fight with managers. Twenty-five people were killed in the blaze, many of them college students.

That's what it all boils down to. Make it appear to the country that Internet Cafe's are evil, no matter the cost. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if the Chinese gov't was behind it. They can't stand free speech.
#6.1 Monkeh on 10 May 2004 - 22:24
THe problem with internet cafes is that it attracts tons of students that should have been at school during school hours, and even more spend the rest of their day there after school.

They're not "evil", they just need more regulations, especially when it comes to students.
#6.2 Miran on 11 May 2004 - 06:48
Depends how old the students are. It seems to me we are talking about college students. Most college students are ADULTS and can decide for themselves whether they want to go to class or hang out at an internet cafe.
#6.3 Monkeh on 11 May 2004 - 19:49
It's mostly high school students, but there are some middle school and college students too.

This is not something that I've made up. I've visited relatives in China recently and I saw this myself, plus, it's common knowledge among the people that I visited.

Lets admit it, the computer games helped lead them to this. I love computer games. Esepsically when they are very violent, but these 10 crazed people ovbiously were driven by something.. I dont think it was just a membership fee.
#7.1 Miran on 11 May 2004 - 06:49
I doubt it was the computer games. I would have to say it probably comes down to heard mentality.

either theres more we arent told or they are probably stretching out the truth. those reactions seem alittle much over some computer usage. probably there to rob the places. And countries (even america) needs to lay off with the scare tactic reporting. thats what cuases people snapping in the first place lol.
#15.1 X Statik Process on 11 May 2004 - 03:14
I couldn't agree more. "Scare Tactic" reporting is so stupid. It makes everyone believe the world is coming to an end, when in reality, a cow escaped and ran onto the highway.

That's the beauty of sensationalism.

#22 njlouch on 11 May 2004 - 11:37
This article contradicts iself. It firstly claims that web cafe's are populated by dropouts, but then when one was set ablaze, it was full of students?
#23 CrimandEvil on 11 May 2004 - 12:13
Good going numbs nuts, I wonder what the Chinese government is going to do now.

Well, clearly the answer is making knives illegal. If they would only make it more difficult to obtain knives, this sort of senseless violence wouldn't happen!

#24.1 XiXora on 11 May 2004 - 14:06
... they gonna cut up food with sticks?
#24.2 memNOC on 11 May 2004 - 15:29
hell, they're used to them by now, anyway.
#24.3 sfd on 11 May 2004 - 19:20

its not the knives fault people die it stupid peopel like you. People who want to ban guns and knives. If someone wants to kill someone it dosnt matter what they use gun knife hot cup of joe. If people just used ther hands to kill would you put a ban on hands. If you did people would use feet. I can kill someone with glass so we better ban glass. It just comes down to people
