Electronic Arts Inc. will develop versions of its video games that support Microsoft Corp.'s Xbox Live gaming service, in a significant boost for the Xbox's prospects of winning over more console gamers, the companies announced last Monday at a press conference before the opening of the Electronic Entertainment Exposition (E3) in Los Angeles.

Prior to Monday's announcement, popular video games such as Madden NFL 2004, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 2004 and NBA Live 2004 could only be played online through Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 2 gaming service or through a PC. Future versions of those games will now be developed for the Xbox Live service, starting with releases this summer, the companies said in a press release.

It was only a matter of time, Microsoft has a way of getting what it wants....

Having said that I think this is simply another blow to the Playstation 2 in that their versions of EA Sports games had online capabilities while the Xbox versions did not, which generally would give the nod to the Playstation 2 version. Although sometimes the graphics were nicer on the Xbox versions, sports games aren't generally as demanding as other types of games so the differences weren't as important as the online differences.

Having said that I think that this is starting to become more about the next generation of consoles and now Microsoft will be able to launch their next console with EA Sports games with Xbox Live capabilities from the get go.
