Xbox version confirmed plus Valve reveal they're in touch with "all the console platform holders"

Doug Lombardi, of Half-Life 2 developers Valve, has given the strongest hint yet that the game may eventually appear on a range of consoles. In an interview yesterday he confirmed that an Xbox version is "is in the works but I can't give you an exact date right now."

More pertinently, though, he added, "We're in touch with all the console platform holders and would like to bring the game to as many platforms as makes sense." If the massively-delayed release of the PC version is anything to go by, though, don't hold your breath for the console incarnations.

Cool to know, though i'll be playing it via pc.
only reason im even getting it is for the mods.

That's like me saying i'm going to buy a case of beer, but only because i collect aluminum cans.........
#2.2 redFX on 02 Jul 2004 - 21:43
What un0 said makes very good sense dude.

There are tons of people out there that buy games not because they like the game itself but because they like a mod built ontop of that game.
#2.3 hotrod on 03 Jul 2004 - 02:40
yeah dude...... that makes tons of sense when there's been next to nothing but a couple of pics released of a few mods.... yeah dude
#2.4 insurektion on 03 Jul 2004 - 03:23
a better version of that poor analogy would be:

thats like saying im going to buy a case of beer so i can create a super mix that is even better than plain beer.

Why can't anything be PC exclusive anymore? The original half-life made it's millions on the PC - the console version was forgettable. I would like to think that Valve would release this as a PC-game only as a thank you to all the fans that made it #1. It's what I'd do. I realize that they can make more money from the game by releasing it to consoles, but wtf - Half-Life was and always will be a PC game in my eyes.
#3.1 theyarecomingforyou on 02 Jul 2004 - 15:30
They might as well release console versions... gets more popularity and money. They've already spent a lot developing the game and porting it doesn't take much; people that only own a console can then play it and everyone in general is happy. It's obviously a PC game though.

The console version of HL was forgettable because:

a) It was on the worst system out. PS2 just sucks.
b) It was released WAY after the pc version, way after it was actually innovative and amazing to look at. So obviously it wont fair as well.

The reason some PC games dont stay exclusive anymore is simple. Developers know games like Half Life 2/Doom 3 require PCs that are just too expensive for "average joe gamer" - so in order to get more sales, they can simply put it on Xbox, which is easier to do than ps2 or gc since we all know the architecture is basically a pc anyway.
#4.1 divertom15 on 30 Jun 2004 - 22:42
Ps2 sucks? Umm did you forget its not the stats of the console that matter but the quality of the games?
Thats why your beloved xbox hasnt faired so well compaired to the ps2.
#4.2 sadatkarim on 01 Jul 2004 - 00:03
Actually the reason ps2 did better was because it was launched earlier than Xbox or GC.
#4.3 badall on 01 Jul 2004 - 00:04
average joe gamer can play bothe doom3 and half-life2 as the hardware that can run doom3 is standerd for a new computer and half-life2 is seriously backwards compatible it even works with a geforce 2 which is a 4 year old graphics card
#4.4 Narlzac85 on 01 Jul 2004 - 09:48
If the success of PS2 is only because of the earlier release date, then tell my why the PS2 continues to outsell Xbox around the world. PS2 wins because of great games and the brand recognition/compatibility. Xbox is great, but MS is just shoving it in peoples faces (at least I feel like it. I actually like MS though). they need a different strategy to crack japan(which is vital)
#4.5 Debugger on 01 Jul 2004 - 15:50
PS2 Hardware's sucks because it's becoming old. But the variety and the quality of the games are in my opinion better than than the rest of the consoles.
#4.6 Rudzer on 01 Jul 2004 - 17:34
Well Dreamcast that was released earlier than PS2 had better textures and gfx (Shenmue and Code Veronica come to mind).

Shame it was killed by sega, it was my all time favorite console
#4.7 bignaz2k on 01 Jul 2004 - 18:09
Dreamcast was awesome...Too bad sega could never get a break
#4.8 jmole on 02 Jul 2004 - 04:32
I just got a Dreamcast for $15 and I have to say I am enjoying playing the sports games on it more then the PS2's sports games.
#4.9 chickemoney on 02 Jul 2004 - 22:47
yeah, duh. NFL2k2 and NBA2k2 owns everything, it's a given, at least im my eyes. Agreed!?
#4.10 Seshiru on 03 Jul 2004 - 22:06
Quality games? On the PS2? Ha! That's a good one!
Oh, and the PS2's hardware was outdated before it was ever even released. It has as much video RAM as an N64 with the expansion pack, and doesn't even support anti-aliasing. Wake up, people.
#5 MrXBob on 30 Jun 2004 - 22:30
Oh, and again - Half Life 2 has always been known to be going to Xbox.

How about get the PC Version out before considering consoles...
#6.1 Ryan92 on 30 Jun 2004 - 23:06
lolz...Agreed...Though if it makes it to an Nintendo Console (Gamecube or Revolution) that be even better .
#6.2 yert* on 30 Jun 2004 - 23:46
I wish they would do that...
#6.3 nvme on 30 Jun 2004 - 23:52
exactly what i was thinking
#6.4 plati on 01 Jul 2004 - 01:58
Thats what I thought theyd originally do, its more logical and pleases more people!

Since when did FPS's ever work on consoles anyway
#6.5 reddline76 on 01 Jul 2004 - 02:27
Do you remember a little game called Goldeneye released by Rare back in '97. That was the definitive FPS on consoles.
#6.6 Narlzac85 on 01 Jul 2004 - 09:50
Pretty damn sure halo kicks ass on consoles too (red faction wasn't too shabby either as well as perfect dark...mm the good ole days before I got my PC)
#6.7 yert* on 03 Jul 2004 - 08:15
Perfect Dark owns all fps on consoles
(1 reply) #7 Snuffy22 on 01 Jul 2004 - 02:36
im over HL2
im no longer gonna buy the game...
#7.1 DaCoOlNeSs on 01 Jul 2004 - 02:50
ok wtf is up with that, why are you no longer going to buy it, because it was delayed? So was the original Half-Life, by about a year or so too. and I bet you STILL bought that game

I hope the console version infects the Xbox with a terrible non reversible virus that make them go boom so no one can play it.

then they get sued company goes bankrupt having to replace all XBOXS and then no more half life games.. nope none at all. and btw WHY WOULD YOU SAY SUCH A BAD THING.. XBox might not be the best console, but trust me ps2 is worse (and so is gamecube) so technically i geuss it is the best console rite now.. lol oops.

The term 'boom' is copyrighted by Steve Jobs.
#8.4 Vannos on 01 Jul 2004 - 13:05
lol ya. he said it so many times
#8.5 kingbob on 02 Jul 2004 - 14:24
I don't have a problem with the Xbox, as a matter of fact I have one. I'm just sick of PC developers consolizing their wonderful games and then ****ting them on the PC. *cough* Deus Ex 2 *cough* Halo *cough*
#9 Palmeiro on 01 Jul 2004 - 06:57
lmao
(1 reply) #10 Hasgaroth on 01 Jul 2004 - 08:33
I really hope they don't screw the gameplay when porting it, like they did with Deus Ex 2... I can't stand FPS's on consoles - they absolutely suck...
Consoles are best at driving games using the proportional joysticks, anything requiring fast movement and targeting is best left to a PC with a mouse and keyboard combination!
I've played HL on PS2 and PC, and took the PS2 version of the game back to the shop because it was just plain uncontrolable...
I've played other FPS's on PS2, and none of them come close to the playability you get on a PC...

IMHO !!!
#10.1 Narlzac85 on 01 Jul 2004 - 09:53
if only the controls in the PS2 version were actually analog (if they were, then it was very poor). Anyway, I bought it for PS2 and beat it, then I bought the PC version (for steam games of course mmm DOD)
#11 Lanky on 01 Jul 2004 - 11:13
It would be awesome if this came out on gamecube, even though I wouldn't wanna play it on any console
(1 reply) #12 FirstSlacker on 01 Jul 2004 - 11:45
Microsoft's Xbox blows IMO because of one major thing (but I'll exclude the minor things for now). They are making to COOP for Doom 3 for Xbox only. That doesn't even mention the fact that they're trying to be a monopoly in the colsole market. Turok anyone?
#12.1 shao on 01 Jul 2004 - 12:17
they? doom3 co-op has nothing to do with valve, or microsoft. Stay on topic you nonce. You blow IMHO, but no one cares, just like no cares about your comment either. heh.

halflife
unreal tournament

and any other pc FPS to console port SUCK

you cant have a decent FPS on a console, keep them on pc
#13.1 atpcz on 01 Jul 2004 - 15:06
its all about the mouse look
#13.2 Dark Warhawk on 01 Jul 2004 - 18:51
ummm then buy a mouse and keybaord for the console?
#14 Cyranthus on 01 Jul 2004 - 17:26
well of course... not that im saying that its any better than the pc, but its obvious that it would of been ported to consoles.
#15 Hills420 on 02 Jul 2004 - 00:56
This was a no-brainer. Why lose that market?
#16 Moustacha on 02 Jul 2004 - 09:37
why can't anyone here, in the gaming world, OPEN THEIR MIND!! think outside the box(or laptop of ur one of those people). let people play what they want, and have their own way of liking to play things.
Valve is only trying to be kind to every gamer out there. some people might like a gamepad, sure, let them play it on Xbox. someone might like it on PC, sure, let them have it on their PC. but for those people who can't afford a beast of a PC because their not spoilt by their parents like some people seem to be on this board.
just think of FUN and not b!tching all the time. let people have they're own way of doing things and not be apart of some facist regeime where u have to do everything in a certain way!
#17 BART_SIMPSON416 on 02 Jul 2004 - 17:16
Now the consoles are more advanced so it wouldn't be any problem i think.
#18 killmaster84 on 04 Jul 2004 - 19:00
halo 2 and half-life 2 this is the best year for gamers
