Atari and Epic Games have announced Unreal Tournament 2004: Editor's Choice Edition. The expanded version of UT2004 is slated for a fall release. Specs include new Onslaught maps and vehicles as well as additional characters and a selection of user-made modifications. UT2004: Editor's Choice will also include all of the content from Unreal Tournament 2004.

New Onslaught maps:
New maps will include never-before-seen areas as well as previously released maps created for Windows XP.

New Onslaught vehicles:
Three new vehicles are being added. The Cicada is a two-seat air vehicle. The Paladin is a tank that includes a player-oriented directional shield. And the Self Propelled Mobile Artillery is a long-range artillery vehicle with a deployable hovering spotter camera.

New characters:
Six new characters will join the lineup. Look for two MetalGuard mercenaries and a pair of Mecha Skaarj as well as two Necris characters.

Additionally, McNealy said, "We believe that SNE is preparing now for the production of its next-generation of products, from the Sony PlayStation Portable to the next-generation PlayStation console and other consumer electronics devices that will be based on its cell processor."

Suggesting such a ramp-up was one of the reasons the game division earnings had slumped, Katsumi Ihara, group chief financial officer for Sony, reportedly said at a Tokyo news conference. "For the PSP and the next-generation entertainment system we continue to have a high level of investment which is bringing down profit."

Sony's net sales for the quarter were flat at 1.6 trillion yen ($14.8 billion), up just 0.5 percent from the previous year, and operating income was 9.8 billion yen ($87.7 million), down from 16.7 billion yen ($149 million) a year earlier.

That's most likely, no doubt it'll give UT2004 a new version number - and when playing online, we just search for servers with that v.number and then we'll know if they have the new vehicles/maps.

I just can't wait for the vehicles to be honest - they sound sooooo nice :-)

so is this a new thing to buy or a patch?
Quote this comment #8.1 Posted by chacho on 29 Jul 2004 - 15:53
both. if you already have retail, you get a patch. otherwise, you buy the new version.

Confirmation
I've got confirmation that this WILL BE FREE to download as an add-on patch. This comes from Mark Rein (Epic Vice President).

Here's the quote:

That is correct. As I explained to HomeLan this morning; everything that's new for this version will be released online for free for owners of existing versions. This is simply a way to refresh the product, with all the new Epic-created stuff and publisher-tested versions of our favorite mods, in time for Xmas. UT2004 is selling extremely well and it never hurts to do a refresh version that gets more attention in retail in time for Xmas. There may be some more goodies in there as well that have not been announced yet but again, nothing that won't also be available online for existing customers.
