Attention to all Windows 98/ME users, your solution is here! A patch has been released which will allow 98/ME users to now be able to play Doom 3! Click here to download the patch and to install this feature take the first disk of the game, replace the default .exe file and then write what you've got on a new CD.

Along with this patch, one of the first mods have been created and released for Doom 3 by Cyberfight.RU. These mods include:

  • Chainsaws Only (3 Kb): it is simple - you have only chansaw and doubled speed of running, have a nice day!
  • RocketDM (3 Kb): Rocket Launcher is the only weapon of yours! Run speed has been increased by 30% and walk speed has been incesed too by 30%, self damage has been decreased so now you can easily do rocketjump from platform to platform

  • 32 players (32 Kb):] Fun meat! Now it is posible! Never tried to play on a server with 32 players in? Then do it! This mode breaks the 4 players limit im multiplayer.

*Use at your own risk! and becareful about the Cooperative Mod, it is said to steal CDKeys. Please read up on it before downloading.*

Dice says: And this is just the beggining! More patches and mods will be released as time continues, and Neowin will be there every step of the way to publish them ;). Upon less than a week of arrival, there are already mods, a patch to fix 98/ME problems, helpful tweaks and other gizmos to spice up, to what I believe is the scariest game ever! :S

BEWARE OF THE CO-OP MOD!!

Just a word of advice, the MOD is said to be a CD Key snagger, doesn't work properly!!!!

EDIT: Ah shoot, dead link, well here goes..

Source:
http://www.fpscentral.com/index.php...te=news&id=6521

Please take the moment to read carefully the story below as a co-op modification may effect your CD-Key permanently. Do not download any mods without being certain.

Couple days ago a mod that would allow co-op in Doom 3 was released which supposedly wasn't finnished. However after several members from PlanetDoom gave it a test, they've recently discovered that their cd key was now listed as "Already in Use". All of what this mod seems to do is display single player maps in the map list and crashes the host whenever a player attempts to join. Obviously, from now on it is believed that this is not a mod at all but more of a cd-key stealing program, so please be aware next time about what you download.

Awesome work dude. Maybe you should bold your whole post for people to be aware of this spyware.

Again, mods should act on this information rather than publicize spyware on the front page.

JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE SAYS ITS TRUE DOES NOT MEAN IT IS.

QUOTE
This is completely, and without a doubt, false.

Open the .pk4 up in winzip yourself, then open the file therein with notepad.

It cannot, will not, and will never, steal, broadcast, tamper with, overwrite, or deal in any way, with your CD Key. It simply cannot.

As long as you don't download or send doomkey in your /doom3/base directory, put any .EXEs or run any doom3 mods that include registry edits, your CD key is fine.

lol, they actually thought it stole their cd-key? . Some games (Halo PC for one) have a problem where exiting unusually (ie crashing) from a multiplayer game doesn't tell the server/master server that you stopped playing, and thus when you try playing again you naturally get a "cd-key already in use" error. Just wait a bit for the server to recognize you're not playing, and then everything's back to normal.

32 players in those small maps? Huh, that should be interesting, together with Rocket DM

Perhaps someone should do an open Mars map, where many could play...

*hugs ut2004* at least mods in that can't steal your cd key

when they wre building this, what idiot thought it would be a good idea to allow mods access to the registry and to send information to an exteneral server. it's just asking to be a keystealer. mods do not need to access to these things.

actually, your cd key is stored in a file named "doomkey" in your Doom3base directory...
Quote this comment #13.2 Posted by elliot on 06 Aug 2004 - 17:02
well it should be even easier to stop mosd doing this then.
Quote this comment #13.3 Posted by IGx89 on 06 Aug 2004 - 17:20
Mods don't/can't do that; see #5.5

this should work for the folks with 98/me

it worked for me with windows 2003 server

Well you could also just copy the data folder from the CDROMs
CD:setupdata

copy the data folder from all 3 CDs into your game directory, now rename the data folder to doom3.... und hopla you got a working doom3 game, you dont even have to enter a cd-key until you wonna play online.

Manager: Hey guys before we send Doom 3 to the factory. Test and make sure it works on Windows 98/ME.
Tech Guy 1: Sure No Problem.
Tech Guy 2: OK

Manager walks off......
Tech Guy 2: Um... Do you know anyone with 98/me here?
Tech Guy 1: Hell no!
Tech Guy 2: I don't want to install that junk.
Tech Guy 1: Me neither.
Tech Guy 2: Lets say it works and play it on XP instead.
Tech Guy 1: YAY!!!

Again why you don't let programmers test there own software!

John Carmack: *code code code ident code code code code*
Tim Willits: I'm done with the last map. Say, john, does your code runs on Win9x?
John Carmack: *code code code code co.... -- Uh.. I wouldn't know. People who use it don't deserve to play anyways. Just like direct 3D. Hmmmmmmm. *code code ident ident close tage code code compile*

And THIS LADIES, is why we ought to bow before John Carmack for he dares doing what none would.
*hughs his 100% legally bought copy of Doom 3*
