- I cannot understand the desire to be first out of the block. Ok, giving someone a year head start might not be the best, but surely it's better to be as close to the others when releasing.
This way they're ensuring that the platform will not be to weak on the hardware side and still not release it late enough to force the customer to choose another console? If Microsoft releasees the Xbox more than half a year in advanced of Sony I fear the ones who has a Playstation 2 will wait quite happily that time in order to get the probably more advanced Sony machine.
I say release the new machine if possibly a quarter after Sony releases theirs would be about ideal. Agree/Disagree? -

- MS knows it can't compete in the direct market with Sony. It's hoping it comes out early like the PS2 did in the last generation, and not early like the Dreamcast did.

- Think about it, sony is god of console market, Nintendo is god of handheld. Why you ask? Backwards compatibility. People just upgrade the system and don't have to buy an entirely new library of games when they upgrade. bwahahahaha

- The working spec was 3 Power5 processors (two cores each).
However, I would not be surprised at all if that gets reworked to, say, some Opteron type chips, produced at IBM's fab.

However, high-level talk amongst industry insiders, including analysts and publishers, suggests that there's more to this particular rumour than idle gossip. Microsoft has so far declined to comment, taking the line that it does not respond to "rumour and speculation", but has not issued a denial...
However, the platform holder has also yet to confirm plans for X04, this year's version of its annual press event, and given the company's apparent desire to gain first-mover advantage in the next generation of home consoles, CES now seems like the most obvious chance to do that before Sony and Nintendo roll out their future hardware at E3 next May.
The event also has some historical significance for the format - CES 2001 marked the debut of the first Xbox, when Bill Gates demonstrated the console and game controller and showed off Oddworld Inhabitants' Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, and Argonaut's platform game Malice.
Earlier this month, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer told a financial analyst meeting that there will be no new Xbox this year, but that does not rule out an unveiling within that time frame. "There's no new Xbox in the next year, but man, are we hard at work on that next Xbox," he told analysts.
Dice says: This CES show has become much more exciting! All signs seem to point to the unveiling of Xbox 2, what do you think? Unveiled or just a rumour?
