Xbox owners keen to get stuck into the demonic world of Doom III will "probably" have to wait until early next year, as Vicarious Visions, the firm handling the conversion process on behalf of original developer id Software, is now unlikely to finish the project in time for its original late 2004 ship target.
id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, speaking to Reuters late on Friday, admitted, "It's probably not going to come out this year," after several weeks of speculation following the release of the PC version. "Back in May, we were kind of hoping we'd have a holiday launch," he said, before concluding: "I'm not sure we're going to get there."

Doom 3 is a great game. It's easily the most atmospheric game ever created, and most definitely the scariest. But that doesnt mean you should beat down on somebody who doesnt like it. Do you know how many people hate Halo purely because it's made by a company that Microsoft bought? Some people (aka, you) need to just play their own games, and enjoy them - not go forcing people to love what you love or hate what you hate.
Oh, and find a dictionary please. I'm sure those things you put on my screen arent words.
The scares were all of the pop-out-of-the-wall variety and the innovative D3 lighting system was more a pain in the rear than anything. I had no sense of dread while playing. For example, in Far Cry when you get dropped on the island with no weapons, THAT was freakin scary and shot my heart rate up. With D3 I'm like "ho-hum," been there, done that.
The run-n-gun gameplay has SO been overdone. In fact there are "modern" games that have matched the intensity of Doom 1, such as "Serious Sam." If you have the tech, why rehash what is in every sense of the word, passe?
And that whole PDA system?! What a dumb way to introduce story background: it cuts the intensity of the first-person shooter BADLY. Now ask yourselves, if the overriding purpose of an FPS like D3 is intense, run-n-gun action, why the heck did they have such a gameplay-sapping convention like the PDAs? So they could fold in some oh-so-witty jokes?
Well, this player ain't laughing at the $$ I spent on the stinker.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. I want my money back, ya hear me Id. I should have |censored| to preview this old-n-busted game.
At least the D3-engine will be put to some good use in the future.
Just because the best PC game of the year isn't coming out for your precious paperweight.. err, Xbox, doesn't mean you have to criticize what you truly know to be an excellent game.
There is more to the video gaming world than Halo. Once you accept this fact, you will be happier.
Also I really dont understand some people when it comes to all those "jokes" about the size of the Xbox. Wait till you see the size and weight of the next gen consoles. They're all gonna be round about the Xbox size. Wanna know why? Hard Drive. That and all the other extra components Xbox has are gonna be copied by Sony for their next system, just because they need to catch up on the technology - and that, my friend, does not make for a small console. You can only fit so much in a tiny plastic case.
it's not that big, youre just small
I also dont see why the size of a console matters. Maybe the people that moan are just too tight/poor to buy themselves a decent entertainment system and cant fit anything else other than their precious tiny PS2/GC. (And actually, if you even bothered to put a PS2 next to an Xbox, you'll see they are only inches apart in size.)
PS2!!!!!!!!!!oneoneonoeone1!111!!111
GC!!!!omgoneoneone!1!!!!!!!!!111!!11
Who cares, really, buy whatever the hell you like you don't have to bash other systems just because YOU don't like it, because I guarantee there are plenty of people who don't share the same opinion. Besides, what did this post have to do with which console is better? It's about Doom3 being delayed for the XBox, not whether the console rocks or sucks. Geez, the ignorance of some people.
Anyways, ya it would probably need a lot more optimizations and reqorking to function on the XBox. Granted the XBox can produce nice visuals, computers have come such a long way since the XBox initially came out and still have trouble with Doom3. I don't have an XBox so I don't follow this news that closely but I'm still wondering what it would look like when comes out and what kind of mp it'll have. Hopefully not the same 4P DM since at least we can grab mods for the computer version.
It takes more than a few bump-maps and fancy lights to impress me, I'm afraid, and whilst the sound is good it just can't save the gameplay which is DIRE.
To quote the amusing brundlefly: grab some armor, RAAAAAR, a demon pops out behind you. Find a PDA to get through door. Repeat. Wash. Rinse.
Sums it up perfectly. It's a tech demo. They spend years developing a highly advanced graphics engine, combine it with moderately above average audio and cobble it together with gameplay that belongs in the early 90's.
Sorry to all the Doom3 fanboys out there but there are going to be many, many games coming our shortly that put the Doom3 engine to good use in an actual GAME.
