Xbox owners keen to get stuck into the demonic world of Doom III will "probably" have to wait until early next year, as Vicarious Visions, the firm handling the conversion process on behalf of original developer id Software, is now unlikely to finish the project in time for its original late 2004 ship target.

id Software CEO Todd Hollenshead, speaking to Reuters late on Friday, admitted, "It's probably not going to come out this year," after several weeks of speculation following the release of the PC version. "Back in May, we were kind of hoping we'd have a holiday launch," he said, before concluding: "I'm not sure we're going to get there."

#3 macrosslover on 23 Aug 2004 - 14:46
who was really expecting it to be released so soon after the pc version anyway. i thought the original thinking was that they would finish the pc version first and then start on the xbox version. i'm not disappointed, it's too much stuff already coming out this holiday season.

I wonder how they are going to get the right sensitivity on the control stick so that they have both aim and the ability to kill the thing that just jumped out behind them?
#5 MrXBob on 23 Aug 2004 - 15:28
This was obvious to anyone - I mean seriously, even Doom 3 cant go up against Halo 2 this christmas. Plus people who really want to play Doom 3 (not just the fanboys who suddenly think anything with normal mapping is the best thing ever and they MUST own it just because they say so...) have already got it on their pc. I'm an Xbox fan and even I cant see D3 playing so well on it... the framerate in some of the videos isnt so hot right now, and the graphics are still only on what looks to be the PC's medium setting.

Who cares? The game is crap anyway.
#6.1 jcvortex on 23 Aug 2004 - 15:38
Since when was it crap? The game may not be innovative but I haven't heard many people call it crap. Maybe you should actually play it first.
#6.2 divertom15 on 23 Aug 2004 - 15:39
next time troll some were else
#6.3 yert* on 23 Aug 2004 - 16:42
No, it is crap He's only stating the obvious
#6.4 Bwizzel-B on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:19
It's a very good game: to call it crap just reeks of ignorance. It'll be up there for game of the year for the PC, I can assure you. Halo is also a good game, and I understand all of the press it got, as it was the only decent FPS on Xbox when it came out. I enjoy playing it, but I like the original UT and UT2004 on the PC much better. I hope M$FT goes hog wild on the online play modes for H2, that would put it right into the "great game" category AFAIAC.

Game of the year???? No it is crap. Pretty lights and that makes a game great? NO! It had some cool parts but overall it was a waste of money. If I could I would return it for the Doom + Doom2 pack. Much better games and deal.
#6.6 T-Metal on 23 Aug 2004 - 21:22
Now let's see if all of you that call the game "crap" can do better. Oh, wait, you can't. So shut the hell up!

#7.2 MrXBob on 23 Aug 2004 - 16:28
Wow, ok. Shut up, man. You have no idea what the hell console he has, stop lashing out just because you dont like Xbox. He said nothing about Halo, he said nothing about Xbox.

Doom 3 is a great game. It's easily the most atmospheric game ever created, and most definitely the scariest. But that doesnt mean you should beat down on somebody who doesnt like it. Do you know how many people hate Halo purely because it's made by a company that Microsoft bought? Some people (aka, you) need to just play their own games, and enjoy them - not go forcing people to love what you love or hate what you hate.

Oh, and find a dictionary please. I'm sure those things you put on my screen arent words.
#7.3 brundlefry on 23 Aug 2004 - 18:10
Personally I think he's right. I found the game to be quite formulaic: grab some armor, RAAAAAR, a demon pops out behind you. Find a PDA to get through door. Repeat. Wash. Rinse.

The scares were all of the pop-out-of-the-wall variety and the innovative D3 lighting system was more a pain in the rear than anything. I had no sense of dread while playing. For example, in Far Cry when you get dropped on the island with no weapons, THAT was freakin scary and shot my heart rate up. With D3 I'm like "ho-hum," been there, done that.

The run-n-gun gameplay has SO been overdone. In fact there are "modern" games that have matched the intensity of Doom 1, such as "Serious Sam." If you have the tech, why rehash what is in every sense of the word, passe?

And that whole PDA system?! What a dumb way to introduce story background: it cuts the intensity of the first-person shooter BADLY. Now ask yourselves, if the overriding purpose of an FPS like D3 is intense, run-n-gun action, why the heck did they have such a gameplay-sapping convention like the PDAs? So they could fold in some oh-so-witty jokes?

Well, this player ain't laughing at the $$ I spent on the stinker.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. I want my money back, ya hear me Id. I should have |censored| to preview this old-n-busted game.

At least the D3-engine will be put to some good use in the future.

Aww don't be mad csabo2 and The Gauge.

Just because the best PC game of the year isn't coming out for your precious paperweight.. err, Xbox, doesn't mean you have to criticize what you truly know to be an excellent game.

There is more to the video gaming world than Halo. Once you accept this fact, you will be happier.
#8.1 MrXBob on 23 Aug 2004 - 16:31
Once PS2 fanboys realise that GTA isnt the only game in the world, maybe all the Halo fanboys will calm down. But damn, those Xbox jokes are old. And I mean OLD. If that's the only thing you can come up with to get back at someone who said they dont like a game that you like, then you should feel ashamed.

Also I really dont understand some people when it comes to all those "jokes" about the size of the Xbox. Wait till you see the size and weight of the next gen consoles. They're all gonna be round about the Xbox size. Wanna know why? Hard Drive. That and all the other extra components Xbox has are gonna be copied by Sony for their next system, just because they need to catch up on the technology - and that, my friend, does not make for a small console. You can only fit so much in a tiny plastic case.
#8.2 ev0| on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:10
you can fit a hard drive in a ps2 and it's alot smaller and less bulky. dumbass !
#8.3 Gobelet on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:11
They didn't used the smallest parts for their console... A 5400RPM 8 GB Hard drive can be squeezed into a PCMCIA card (look at the iPod). A DVD Drive could be real small like a laptop CD Drive. And a P3 or a Celeron don't need so much space to disspate correctly heat. A little reorganisation of it and you can make a Mini Xbox, I'm pretty sure.
#8.4 threetonesun on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:16
The XBox is undeniably large. But, at least it has four controller ports.
#8.5 JohnO on 23 Aug 2004 - 18:09
wtf are you talking about snes has 4 ports, thats not a big deal

it's not that big, youre just small
#8.6 ubugmetoo on 23 Aug 2004 - 18:40
Well Its going to suck about the same on XBOX as it did on the PC.
#9 MrXBob on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:37
Okay, lets have an example of your stupidity here. Have you guys opened up your dvd players lately? Have you seen the empty space? I mean seriously, you could fit 3 dvd players in ONE case with all that extra space. So why make them that large?

I also dont see why the size of a console matters. Maybe the people that moan are just too tight/poor to buy themselves a decent entertainment system and cant fit anything else other than their precious tiny PS2/GC. (And actually, if you even bothered to put a PS2 next to an Xbox, you'll see they are only inches apart in size.)
#10 CrazedModder on 23 Aug 2004 - 17:58
XBOX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111111111111!!111!oneone!11!!!!111!111
PS2!!!!!!!!!!oneoneonoeone1!111!!111
GC!!!!omgoneoneone!1!!!!!!!!!111!!11

Who cares, really, buy whatever the hell you like you don't have to bash other systems just because YOU don't like it, because I guarantee there are plenty of people who don't share the same opinion. Besides, what did this post have to do with which console is better? It's about Doom3 being delayed for the XBox, not whether the console rocks or sucks. Geez, the ignorance of some people.

Anyways, ya it would probably need a lot more optimizations and reqorking to function on the XBox. Granted the XBox can produce nice visuals, computers have come such a long way since the XBox initially came out and still have trouble with Doom3. I don't have an XBox so I don't follow this news that closely but I'm still wondering what it would look like when comes out and what kind of mp it'll have. Hopefully not the same 4P DM since at least we can grab mods for the computer version.
#11 thenay on 23 Aug 2004 - 21:17
meh i'm loving it on the PC
#12 angrybrit on 24 Aug 2004 - 10:04
Don't worry, ppl won't want a bland version that cost more than the better one on the PC.
#13 The Gauge on 24 Aug 2004 - 11:17
I don't have an X-Box. I have a well specced PC and for those of you that didn't understand me the first time, I'll repeat: The game is crap.

It takes more than a few bump-maps and fancy lights to impress me, I'm afraid, and whilst the sound is good it just can't save the gameplay which is DIRE.

To quote the amusing brundlefly: grab some armor, RAAAAAR, a demon pops out behind you. Find a PDA to get through door. Repeat. Wash. Rinse.

Sums it up perfectly. It's a tech demo. They spend years developing a highly advanced graphics engine, combine it with moderately above average audio and cobble it together with gameplay that belongs in the early 90's.

Sorry to all the Doom3 fanboys out there but there are going to be many, many games coming our shortly that put the Doom3 engine to good use in an actual GAME.
#14 cjphilogelos on 28 Aug 2004 - 08:45
Well hey, if you guys are so willing to sell your Doom 3 I'd be more than happy to buy it. Just PM me a price.
