Electronic Arts' Madden NFL 2005 has broken the company's own sales records, with the title selling some 1.35 million units across five platforms in its first week on sale in North America. That's the fastest start ever for the series, which is this year celebrating its 15th consecutive year of release - the first Madden annual revision was launched in 1989, and there's been one every year since then.

Notably, the game is also driving the uptake of console online services in the USA. This is the first time that the game has been playable on Xbox Live, and the second time that it's been online on the PS2; EA claims that 315,000 new online user accounts have been registered between Madden 2005 and NCAA Football 2005 so far this year.

Too bad all the reviews point to ESPN 2K5 as being the better game.

Hmmm, that's odd, I didn't see any reviews for the PC version. Oh, yeah, that's right. It's not coming out on PC. Hmmm., I guess Madden is still the king!!!!

I won't be buying Madden NFL 2005 for the XBOX this year because they foolishly chose to only release the Collector's Edition for the inferior PS2. I guess they did it to try and increase the sales for the PS2, but it's still lame. I'd have bought the game this year if they had released the Collector's Edition for the XBOX. If I get an itch to play Madden, I'll just play Madden 2003 or 2004.

I wouldn't say the PS2 is inferior to the xbox. you've only got a geforce3 in there for christ sake...
#6.2 jcvortex on 23 Aug 2004 - 19:47
Uh, yea! It is inferior!

64MB of ram campared to the 32MB makes a huge diffrence in the textures developers use. People always bring up the nvidia chip in the xbox as the reason for the superiority (all though thats superior also). SEGA's OutRun 2 arcade machine looks much better then the xbox version. Yet the arcade machine is the same xbox hardware...except for the 512MB of ram.

I saw the EA dev's on G4 talking about the most difficult thing in developing Madden was having to make memory optimizations for the PS2 32MB limit.

Why do you think people use the xbox version of there games to demonstrate them.

The PS2 is inferior and that is a no-brainer ev0|.

this game looks beautiful for the xbox, hopefully pc will look the same, and as for the ps2, its looks good, but not as good as the xbox version
