I'm confused about something here.

1.) UT2004 is dependant on DirectX (Direct3D Rendering) right?
2.) But Linux cannot support DX because it's a Microsoft API.
3.) So how can one play this game on Linux (unless it's OpenGL or Software rendered)?

X.) If I were to write a UT2004 mod with Shader Model 3.0 enhancements, would Linux be able to process the information because DX decodes the SM pathways. (I know it's GPU dependant, so there's not a problem there).

Eh? It has an OpenGL engine as well as a Direct3D one. You can go into your UT2004.ini and enable it.

Epic Games have been creating *nux ports of all their Unreal-based games for a long time now. The *nix ports use OpenGL 1.4 as it's 3D renderer. I think software rendering is supported as well.

So, is it possible to get comparable framerates like the Windows version? If it's comparable, that would be great.

yea the game runs great for me on my linux box. actually faster than windows did in dx for me.

That sounds like a lot of hard work. Creating 2x Rendering engines (DirectX & OpenGL), I don't suppose there's a way of converting a DX engine to O-GL (I doubt it, but then again I'm not sure).

Acutally, with an nvidia graphics card I find the game runs BETTER on Linux.

I hope this one works, Windows patch left a little to be desired...

I assume you're using ATi? In which case it is them, not you. They only support X86Config 4.3 and don't support X.org yet (which is used in most recent distros)... there are patches about, but I've found all of them hose my system (SuSE, Fedora Core 2, etc).

There are rumours that ATi will make a shared base driver (for Windows and Linu and just have a different part that interfaces with the OS (either Windows, Linux, Linux64, etc) - but I wouldn't expect them to come out before 64 bit drivers that are meant to come out at the end of this year ("allegedly".

If you have an nVidia card then you shouldn't have any issues at all (with SuSE, for example, you can download a patch with the online updater to enable 3D graphics).
