Half-Life 2's preload to Steam account holders continued apace this week as Valve allowed users to download "the majority of the audio of Half-Life 2 in encrypted form," according to an update on the developer's website.

The second splurge of data - preceded by around 1040MB of texture and art content last week - comes in at around 900MB and, as with the original preload, will not cost you anything to download. The idea is that the moment the game is made available, those with preloaded copies on their hard disks will be able to start playing immediately once payment is made.

The 11 console titles--all sequels--that the research predicts will sell more than 1 million units each and will dominate holiday sales are as follows:

•Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (Take-Two, PS2)
•Halo 2 (Microsoft, Xbox)
•Madden NFL 2005 (Electronic Arts, PS2)
•Need for Speed Underground 2 (Electronic Arts, PS2)
•Gran Turismo 4 (SCEA, PS2)
•Spider-Man 2 (Activision, PS2)
•Tony Hawk's Underground 2 (Activision, PS2)
•Pokémon LeafGreen (Nintendo, GBA)
•Pokémon FireRed (Nintendo, GBA)
•Metal Gear Solid 3 (Konami, PS2)
•Mortal Kombat: Deception (Midway, PS2)

Wedbush Morgan predicts that during 2004, 218 million pieces of software will be sold in total, skewed such that an astonishing 114 million of them will be moved during the final three months of the year. In addition, the report closes with in-depth looks at six of the major third-party publishers and recommendations for investors (giving a "Buy" rating to Take-Two, Activision, Atari, and Electronic Arts and a "Hold" rating to Midway and THQ).

While today's report focused on the console and handheld sectors, the document briefly alluded to three PC games thought capable of driving sales of a million or more before the end of the calendar year. Those would be Doom 3 (Activision), the upcoming The Sims 2.0 (Electronic Arts), and "November’s" release of Half-Life 2 (VU Games). "We expect the total unit sales for the 11 console/handheld million unit SKUs plus the three PC million unit SKUs to exceed 30 million units in calendar 2004," said Wedbush analysts Michael Pachter and Edward Woo in today's report.

I just finished downloading most of this already! Seems like final release is getting closer!!!

What else do we need to play the game?!!! Apart from the key etc...as Doom 3 is only 1.49GB.

#3.1 zonemen on 04 Sep 2004 - 00:43
Gabe has said that the game will be about 3GB in size. So it is likey that there will be one more preload, and then once you activate it, it will download the .dll files to actually play the game.
#3.2 Kevine on 04 Sep 2004 - 02:06
BTW doom is actually about 2.5 gigs uncompressed from those pk4 files.
#3.3 FuricTrax on 04 Sep 2004 - 15:48
My whole doom folder is only 1.5GB

Hmm i wonder how long it is before the beta exe and the new downloaded content get put together to make a somewhat playable game
#5.1 Lanky on 04 Sep 2004 - 00:05
Wont happen, not untill the maps/models/scripts etc are preloaded.
#6 Ruciz on 04 Sep 2004 - 01:17
interesting marketing scheme. I like it.. cept that its taking forever to release and wasting peoples precious 200GB HDDs space!

I believe that Valve just decided the best way to make money was to put the following idea into practice:
Delay the game using excuses, or it could have just been an excellent coincidence. Get everyone who has been hyped up on the game and teased to pre-load, then as soon as it's releaseed, rather than wait for a copy in store people will just buy it on steam so they can get it earlier ... because most people will think, *shrug* i've already pre-loaded and it's cheaper buying it on steam so i may as well. This gives steam good name and valve money. Of course i could be wrong, but it doesnt hurt having idea's.

I'm just going to be buy the retail version and enter the cd key into steam.
#7.2 Varsity on 04 Sep 2004 - 07:29
Of course, it couldn't possibly be that the entire concept of pre-loading is to spread out bandwidth usage so it's not all done in one mad rush at release.

How irrational!

I think valve will make alot of money from people buying it over steam , seeing it means leess cd's,cases, boxes, instruciton manuals etc.
Personally I couldn't buy it over steam, Id much rather have all the physical stuff.
#8.1 Xerxes on 04 Sep 2004 - 04:48
Same here, if I'm gonna spend AUSD$99.95 on a game, I want the box and all the goodies that come with it
#8.2 MonkeyWhacker on 04 Sep 2004 - 22:41
well ill just buy it over steam and burn all the gcf files to a dvd, then copy it over into my steamapps after format or something. Don't really want a manual and really could careless for the box

Where is Steam hiding all these files? Steam says it's 100% preloaded on my machine, but I can't find any files od the 1gig/900mb size in the Steam Dir or Subdirectories.
#9.1 epple on 04 Sep 2004 - 04:23
I have my downloaded files (.gcf's) in "../Steam/SteamApps", where the folder of my account is as well.

Anyone have a torrent? I don't care for leaving the steam client open constantly.
#10.1 Varsity on 04 Sep 2004 - 07:29
But leaving a BT client open constantly is OK? :p
#11 JonathanVP on 04 Sep 2004 - 05:25
All this freakin' downloading.....the game better come out soon!!!
#12 ubelphenix on 04 Sep 2004 - 05:38
yay... getting closer (i hope)

it would make zero sense to do all this preloading and then wait another month to release it.

it'll be this month folks.

btw- does this not mean it'll be out on torrents the same day its released to the public?

doesnt this encourage piracy?

i'll bhe buying the game though; love my manuals
#13.1 Varsity on 04 Sep 2004 - 12:56
The content will be there, but you can't play it without buying.
#13.2 BananaMan on 04 Sep 2004 - 14:37
Like Varsity said, you can't make any use of the preloaded data without buying, the important files (critical to the game's function) will be encrypted.

Riiiiight. How many times has that been said.

This is a nice concept, they save their bandwidth and we get the game quicker after is released, nice
Kudos to them
#15 YeCKeL on 05 Sep 2004 - 02:43
Seems odd i thought it used the same sounds in CS:CZ
#16 GamblerFEXonlin on 05 Sep 2004 - 02:43
This is like buying a car and have it built for you. They don't have to build any more cars then they are going to sell. And we save some environment recourses too heh

I like owning the manuals too but I'd love to get another UT2004 CD-key directly from Epic for $10 instead of buying a whole new box just for my brother.
