The shooter doesn't have a release date yet, but Valve will take your money anyway.

Valve has announced that online orders for Half-Life 2 via the developer's Steam downloading service have begun. While the oft-delayed first-person shooter still does not have a concrete release date, those who order the game will receive the final version of Counter-Strike: Source immediately. That game's beta has now officially closed.

At present the new venture is being called "Exclaim," but this is apparently only a temporary name and is likely to be replaced before the firm starts trading. Cousens is joined in the new venture by Europlay Capital Advisers, the Los Angeles based firm which is headed by industry veterans Sean Brennan and Mark Dyne and has advised on a number of major industry deals in recent years.

It's expected that along with the Cheltenham and Manchester studios - accounting for some 160 employees - "Exclaim" will also take possession of several of Acclaim's products in development, including Interview with a Made Man and Heist.

The graphics are really nice and the physics are top notch but it's still Counter Strike.

I caved.. and spent the past few hours running around being a total n00b on CS - I aint played CS for years and god it showed

Promising for HL2 though - physics, etc and the way the game runs is just nice. Can't wait for the main (and now paid for) event

i never played reg CS but being such a HL/Source fan I just broke down and started playing CS-S. Love it and i'm actually pretty good. (thanks to all the other fps games i've played). Can't wait myself.

I played CS: S 15 mins. It's great!!!

I wasn't surprised about HL2 though.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #11 Posted by GL_RandomHero on 07 Oct 2004 - 22:48
Rumor is PC Gamer(US) gave HL2 a 98 percent and thats a tie with the highest score they've ever given. So HL2 must be pretty kick ass.

Anyways...I think I'll buy the Gold Package.

And CS Source is awesome...I had played it in the beta and the only bad part is that I've always hated Dust...and that was the only map available during the beta.

Upgraded my ATI-Serial (Bronze) to the Silver version... Not interested in the collectors (Gold) stuff, already got that Preordered anyway.

i didnt think id buy it through steam, but given the opportunity i did it without pause

anyhow, CS has never been my thing, ive always prefered quake deathmatches, but its still good fun.

I just traded 5 games in to pre-pay for HL2. I just have to sit and wait now. Yea!

Are there any other good mods coming out for HL2? I read of a sword fighting one. Is the DOD source upgrade going to be significantly better? That game was way more fun, for me, than CS.

Hehe I quite like these small comments that are being dropped. "but Valve will take your money anyway."
Quote this comment #18.2 Posted by ANova on 08 Oct 2004 - 05:11
If it were up to Valve they would release HL2 immediately, but a contract between them and Vivendi Universal is preventing that, since Vivendi are being greedy assholes and sitting on the release.
Quote this comment #18.3 Posted by D-j-M on 08 Oct 2004 - 06:19
Exactly. This isn't Valves fault.
Quote this comment #18.4 Posted by theyarecomingforyou on 08 Oct 2004 - 17:10
They're hardly "taking" your money... you are getting a product in return. Heck, more people will buy Half-Life 2 for CSource than for the game itself; so really it's just a delay until you can play singleplayer.

true, but then so are valve by charging the same prices as if it went through a publisher anyway.

everyone's hungry, especially gabe
Quote this comment #19.1 Posted by Varsity on 08 Oct 2004 - 06:34
Because of the same contract...obviosuly.

Steam or not, Vivendi still gets a piece of the pie. Just less goes into burning cds and printing manuals for the game.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #20 Posted by Flash on 08 Oct 2004 - 06:00
id buy the cds, not some virtual files to be downloading on the computer. cds are better anyways i mean, who the heck would go to a friends house to download the games when you just insert cds in the tray?

they invented these things called CD burners recently I know what you mean tho, lend the steam account to a random internet buddy, and watch him change the email address, not quiet the same

I'd like to know how many sales they made in the first day of pre-order being available - SO many hungry gamers, salivating for a taste of whats to come.

And of course you do get a TIINY little bit of HL2 in the Video Stress Test in CS: Source......
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #23 Posted by sloppycode on 08 Oct 2004 - 08:30
all that time cs:source beta had all the maps already on it hence the 400mb or w/e

Hmm what can I say.. WHAT AN AWESOME ENGINE!
It's even more awesome that they're going to release Half-Life 1 with the Source engine, coool! Until those games are available I'll stick to CS
(4 replies) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #26 Posted by antareus on 08 Oct 2004 - 12:31
Why anyone would be excited about paying for what is essentially a graphics update to Counterstrike is beyond me. CS has always had bottom-of-the-barrel gameplay.
Quote this comment #26.1 Posted by threetonesun on 08 Oct 2004 - 14:11
I'll be the first to say I like DoD/Team Deathmatch esque games a lot more, but CS is a cool concept. Plus, the Source version plays differently than the original ... it's more better
Quote this comment #26.2 Posted by Surr3al on 08 Oct 2004 - 16:40
Wow, Antareus seeing that CS is the #1 mult-player fps right now you couldn't be more wrong. Well, your opinion is right, but globally (where cs exists) it's incorrect.
Quote this comment #26.3 Posted by ANova on 08 Oct 2004 - 19:29
You aren't really paying for CSS, you're paying for HL2. CSS is just the multiplayer aspect of HL2. A deathmatch will be coming as well, whether officially or as a mod. And even if you don't consider HL2 to be good the game is worth it just for the engine, I hope you realize how many mods will come about from Source.
Quote this comment #26.4 Posted by antareus on 09 Oct 2004 - 05:51
I just find it to have zero depth. It may be the most popular, but that doesn't bestow it any gameplay. I guess I was hoping for HL2 multiplayer, it seemed like it could be really interesting. Valve's milking of CS for every penny just gets old.

I dont know about some, but I'm really not even interested in Half Life 2 anymore. Dont forget it was around September 20th 2003 that is was supposed to be out..I've totally lost my hipe....

You know you will buy it as soon as all your friends buy it and tell you constantly how cool it is.

Quote this comment #27.4 Posted by ANova on 08 Oct 2004 - 19:36
What a lame excuse. I think you're just rebelling against what is considered 'popular mainstream'. The game will be good despite the delay, and if you choose to pass then so be it. That's one less complainer to have to listen to.

Gian-Pa, is DoD: Source and HL1: Source available already as well? Just got me thinking because in your screen shot it looks like both those titles have a [colored] icon, unlike HL2 which is still grayed out.

Well, since Valve lets you prepay for your game ahead of time, do they fully expect to win the [legal] battle with Vivendi then? I would be slightly worried to say the least. Are they sure they can win this battle say sometime in November [when HL2 'is scheduled'] for a tentative release date?

Well I caved and bought silver, very nice played Aztec and Office, might as well just delete all my old cs stuff because this is the Shi@ Able too run in 1024 with my Geforce TI 4200-2800 AMD-512R and ran between 35-65 frames , Highly recommened game imo. I just hope Valve/vivendi/ati can work out there problems and get us the rest of what we payed for ASAP
