Dragon Quest VIII To Own Halo 2?

Halo 2 was widely publicized by Microsoft as being the largest money-making launch in the history of entertainment releases, with over 125 million in first day sales. Well look out, Master Cheif, you're facing off against Slime!

Retail reports out of Japan indicate that Square Enix and the Japanese retail community are expecting even more out of Dragon Quest VIII when it sees Japanese launch on 11/27. Apparently, Square Enix plans to ship more than 2.5 million copies of the game for its first shipment, arriving to stores in time for the Saturday launch.

As large as it is, the initial shipment may not be able to meet retailer demand. On top of the original allotment of 2.5 million copies promised by Square Enix, retailers had apparently demanded additional copies totaling over 700,000 units. According to one retail source, Square Enix will only be able to provide 40% of that amount, leading up to total shipments of 2.78 million-or-so copies of the game.

When you consider how much Dragon Quest VIII actually costs, these numbers become even more impressive. Most stores are taking pre-orders for the game for the equivalent of $80, with same-day purchasers likely to have to shell out upwards of $90 at some stores. Assuming Square Enix manages to sell close to the initial allotment of 2.5 million copies on day one, DQVIII could see one day totals eclipsing even Halo 2's awesome numbers.

Of course, we're assuming that the game will do such massive business in its first day. But, given the large-scale pre-order campaign for the game, where Dragon Quest VIII is visible at every convenience store in the nation and the game's theme song can be heard at seemingly every street corner in Tokyo, first day sales could indeed be huge. Square Enix is anticipating such buzz from the game that it's opening up its customer support call center for special hours this Saturday and Sunday and will be fielding Dragon Quest VIII questions only.

Overall, the game should be able to pull Grand Theft Auto sized numbers. While Square Enix itself hasn't given out official estimates (all the numbers in this story are not official numbers), Hirokazu Hamamura of Enterbrain, the publisher of Japan's Famitsu videogame magazine, expects the game to top four million in sales eventually.

We should have some firm numbers early next week. But before that, stay tuned to IGNPS2 for coverage of the DQVIII launch and DQVIII itself on late Friday night in America.

The xbox is still behind the 3DO/CD-i in total system sales in Japan. Now thats what I call getting Owned.

But no one cares about Japan. We like games that are, like, good and stuff.

so how come all the games we play come from japan (except for sport games like nhl2005 etc)

Please... Japan certainly has a major influence, but it's far from being the majority of games over here.

because clearly, game quality is dictated by the number of stores buying the games.
#2.1 threetonesun on 27 Nov 2004 - 02:19
Well, let's follow this logic then.

Halo was good, so they made a sequel, Halo 2.

Dragon Quest was good, so they ...
#2.2 moeburn on 27 Nov 2004 - 03:30
You missed my point. Halo wasn't nessecarily good, and 'good' rarely dictates sequels. It simply had good advertising and marketing, and made alot of money.
#2.3 breadfan on 27 Nov 2004 - 09:31
in todays world good in anything either requires a sequal or a third-party copy (most of the time it gets both)
#2.4 AV0X on 27 Nov 2004 - 16:57
Yeah, you're right moe, we did miss your point. Halo wasn't a good game, it was a great game. You can say otherwise but most of the gaming community disagrees with you.

Maybe I'm missing something, but the totals don't add up:

Halo 2: 125 million in the first day
Dragon Quest VIII: 2-3 million in it's first day. Even at double the cost I don't see how there can be any comparison?
#3.1 RufioPan on 27 Nov 2004 - 03:01
The Halo 2 figure of 125 million is in dollars.
The DQVIII numbers are in number of units shipped. Multiply that by $80, and you have first day sales of up to $240 million, almost double Halo 2.

Of course, these are all estimates.
#3.2 GRex on 27 Nov 2004 - 03:01
Halo2 made a $125 mill in first day sales.

Now take Dragon Quest let say on the low end at $80 selling 2.5 million copies. Thats $200 million.
#3.3 jagedEdge on 27 Nov 2004 - 04:44
That's also $80 dollars as opposed to $50-55. I don't even see how you can compare the sales of the two. Kinda like how they compared Halo 2 to movie sales. Move tickets cost $7. Halo 2 cost $50-55. Big difference there.

jagedEdge: yea but japan is a really small country compared to US/Canada

Small in size, yes, but it has a population of over 126million, which is about half that of the US.

Thats funny put the reply in at the same time

I think also taking into account the population of a country is inportant as well. IT shouldn't be dollars or sales alone that make up the success of a game, but more so the percentage of people that bought the game in a market. And more importantly, the impact a game has for its quality (will people remember the game in 10 year?)

Great point. I'd have to add that there are a whole lot more people with Ps2's than there are people with X Boxes. There are more possible consumers in the market for this game.

The 8-bit Dragon Warrior/Quest games Owned Super Mario Bros. 3 in Japanese sales back in the day. Halo 2 didn't even come close to SMB3 hysteria or sales numbers anywhere in the world.

who cares about sales numbers give us good games

IS this coming out for PC? We really need a good RPG -themed- like this or Zelda ASAP. There haven't been many new PRGs of late except NWN.
#9.1 Major_Tom on 28 Nov 2004 - 03:04
Knights Of The Old Republic was a really good RPG for the PC
#9.2 Rudy on 28 Nov 2004 - 21:27
KOTOR is not a console style rpg though

Dragon Warrior VII came out on Playstation a few years ago.

I wouldn't say it's much of a shame, either. DWVII wasn't all that great, especially when you take into account the competition it was up against, Final Fantasy VII, Lunar, etc.

Edit:
DWVIII looks really really good, though. I'm definitely looking forward to its stateside release.

#16 moeburn on 28 Nov 2004 - 15:57
You guys know these sales numbers are referring to the total amount of units bought by the STORE, not the consumer?
#17 perochan on 29 Nov 2004 - 00:26
LETS JUST WAIT FOR THE SELLING RESULT FOR DRAGON QUEST VIII IN JAPAN.
#18 DodgeViper on 29 Nov 2004 - 01:42
Remember that Japanese gamers prefer a different style of games to UK & US, I haven't really heard of Dragon Quest before, probably read it once or twice but never heard about it, I've heard of games such metroid prime on the gamecube which I'm not into but haven't heard about this so I doubt that it'll do as well as Halo 2 or GTA SA.

this game will beat halo 2, and will be a better game than halo 2 (maybe this one will live up to the hype) ive defenitely been following this game for a while, and now that its released im hoping they will release it in north america
