Blizzard extends WOW trial period due to bugs

Blizzard plans to give certain users an extension on their free trial period for massively multiplayer title World of Warcraft, which launched in the States last Tuesday and became available for pre-order in Europe on Friday.

The gesture comes in response to criticism of technical issues surrounding the game's launch. It seems that despite running a couple of "stress tests" in the run-up to release to make sure the game could cope with demand, the developer was forced to almost double its server capacity in order to keep up - and this created some issues that made it impossible for some players to log in for a short while.

Well, first of all.. all the stress tests were only available to a LIMITED number of people. I wanted to play in the stress test but I didn't have a fileplanet acount, nor was I going to get one.

If you ask me, that is kind of a joke of a stress test, limiting the amount of people that can log on....

If they wanting to do a true stress test, they should have made it completely open for everyone.

But from what I've heard, there were stress problems in the open beta and stress tests periods. Bad Blizzard, very bad!

They usually simulate a large server load in the stress tests so they don't need to make them open for everyone. I know the guys behind Guild Wars let one player count as many to the server so it uses up more resources during the alpha tests. I guess Blizzard did something similar, but it's not unexpected they hadn't time to fix all problems shown during their stress test before retail since they rushed out WoW so quickly. That was probably Vivendi's decision though. Software developers rarely want to rush something out, it's the marketing guys who do.

Ok, i live in the UK.
Is there any way i can play the game or a beta test or WHATEVER before February next year?
Seems quite harsh on teh europenas, why should we wait 3 months longer?

Cause Blizzard is an american company and thus we should be rewarded for living here and not elsewhere.

they make awesome games but they always have problems with each of their titles at the beggining. A friend bought it and for now he says it's great but .. overloaded server and bugs

Would you care to stop spewing fud for a moment and explain the problems any other Blizzard games have at at launch? Cause thats funny, WC3 and all their other games never had these problems you say they had.

Meh, not to mention that they STILL don't have PayPal billing working .... world of warcraft has been taking up 4gb of useless space on my hard drive since last tuesday

Oh well, apparently, I am not missing much, as I don't really have the patience to wait in queue
#5 Mav Phoenix on 30 Nov 2004 - 20:14
The queues are hit and miss really. But I am pissed about the level 20 Paladin quest that is broken (been broken for a while too).

if you have 2 1gig sticks of ram (like me) just leave wow running all the time logged in at the char screen, because well. you will avoid the cue's, the server im in doesn't have bad ques at all, ive only been in the que once in 300th' about 20min wait.

the lag and bugs are crappy, but most of the ppl wont notice them because no one is high enough level yet.

also there are no ques if you do not pick a highly populated server
#7.1 threedaysdwn on 01 Dec 2004 - 02:18
Um, aren't the queues only when you first join a server to create a char? Once you have created your character... no queues. At least as far as I've seen.

I've had no problems yet. I picked a server with low population and never waited to play. The only lag I felt was during Sunday night, but it didn't bother me at all. I am quite pleased with this game so far.

Something really stupid in here... Ppl crying because they are doing maintenance on a regular baisis so it's ok... But the only prob is that everyone jump on servers on central and eastern realms while the mountain and pacific were mainly empty... They even starte moving players too help that... Also, this game had some lag during the first days and crashed once, ONCE....

Before crying, remember any launch title of MMORPG, tell me one that didn't crashed once on the first month... Even EQ2 crashed everyday from the launch date until 1 month later... Ask any MMORPG player (that are not "EQ is the best" or "x game is the best" ) , WoW is once of the best launch that was. Crashed once since the start, all the other are daily maintenance, schedule on a regular basis to help the servers and install the new one... and its between 4 and 5 am EST... Since all players are from states/canada, there isn't alot of players on those time...

Seriously, with the launch the game had, ppl are just crying for nothing. It's a very good start, no prob, some lag sometime but everything is far better then any mmorpg launch...

As for the queue, its only for server with high population... when you get a queue to create a character, its because you selected a server with high population like a moron... Take medium or low population, like they suggest (or the suggested server, this feature is there not for nothing), and you won't have to wait... And yes, it's not only when creating a character... I get these when loging on my account... my server got high population 2hours after I started played... launch date, you never know what server to take lol

well, contrary to what person above believes, many of the servers were crashing repeatedly (one of the servers for about 2 hours would come back up for 5 minutes and then crash and repeat). even the login servers have crashed at least twice since launch. my server has hard crashed twice in one day and lagged to the point of disconnecting everyone at least 3 times in the times i've been online and playing.

but you know, since the start the servers have just been getting more stable. i have never had to wait in a queue (i'm on a highly populated pacific server). and i've only seen one or two bugs (one being on my friend's computer) and i'm level 22 at the moment.

and uh, the server's "population" is based on the time you check it. go on at 4am pst and all of the pacific servers will register as "low" population. so it's pretty stupid to blame someone for being on a populated server if they say signed up at 1 am when the population said "low".

also there are a lot of people that are high level already. i've heard rumors of people reaching 60 already, and i have personally seen 44+s in the world, with mounts

but yeah, best mmorpg launch i have ever seen, and i have been around for a few. not to mention that blizzard is actually giving us extra free time to compensate for the play time we've missed (something i've never seen another company do at launch).
