The first sales figures from Nintendo's latest hardware launch are expected to be announced today, with half a million units of the Nintendo DS handheld sold in North America in the launch week. That represents around 90 per cent of the stock which Nintendo shipped to retail stores across North America for the launch, and indeed many retailers have reported that the console has sold out at their stores.
Online auction site eBay has seen an upside from the early popularity of the console, with some bidders paying over twice the standard retail price of the DS in order to get their hands on one last week. The 500,000 unit launch week puts Nintendo well on track to meet its target of selling a million units of the console in North America by the end of the calendar year, along with two million units in Japan - where the DS launches this week.

ABC and a half!
When I got my Gamecube, a week or two after release, it was out of stock in many places but I still managed to find one in an Argos shop (but only one of the 5 within 20 miles of me..)
Edit: Just realised that maybe Nintendo simply shipped more units. The aim is to sell the most you can, not the most of what you send out. If the aim was to just sell out as soon as possible they'd send one to every shop and be sold out instantly...
It sold 90% of the shipped units in a week, thats a great sign.
ABC and a half!
The most surprising thing for me is not that the DS has sold so well, but that the GBA still managed to sell 800,000 units in the same time the DS sold 500,000. Maybe Nintendo aren't crazy with this third piller stuff.
The PSP obviously won't out sell the DS for a long time, just because there's not as many being made. Sony are being cautious, the PSP costs them a ****load of money. We're looking at 200,000-500,000 sold all this year in Japan, where as the DS already has 2 million pre-orders in Japan alone.
I'll lay Nintendo's pattern out on the table:

3. Gameboy
4. Nintendo 64 and Virtual Boy
5. Uhh....guys? Virtual Boy bombed and our resources to create violent games and have free reignis gone! What to do!
6. Nintendo COLOR! WOOO!
7. Guy? People aren't biting. We'll need to really reel 'em in this time.
8. Enter: Gamecube!
Sh*t guys. Too little, too late. Sony and Microsoft are dominating us. What do we still rock in? HENDHELDS!! LET'S RESURECT OLD GAMES ON CONSOLES AND PUT THEM ON HANDHELDS!! pEOPLE WON'T KNOW THJE DIFFERENCE!

10. Handhelds are dropping in sales guy. Let's do this. Since Nintendo 64 flopped, we had no type of eulogy or goodbye! Time to enter Nintendo DS!! Look! Top of the line (for Nintendo) with 64 games!! Next; the handheld that plays Gamecube games!! Noone will know! Most of you are too blind to rezlise that!
