Rockstar Games has now made Grand Theft Auto 2 available to download for free.

Rockstar made the original GTA available to download sometime ago. The original, and now GTA2, have been revamped and remastered to work with today's PCs. However, they do note that the game still may not work correctly, and they cannot take responsibility for any problems caused.

GTA2 was the final game in the series to be 2D for the PlayStation and PC. It was an excellent step-up from the original. Looking back on it now, Rockstar has performed quite an amazing feat by completely transforming the GTA series. It started off with a violent, bloody, exciting game...that had no 'Save' option. It then stayed loyal to its origins with GTA: London, before adding an amazing 3 islands with GTA2.

But then, GTA changed so drastically, it would never be the same again: it went 3D. GTA3 astonished all gamers, and it was a true success, especially for its first time under a new engine. Vice City proved to be even more successful, with incredible missions and tonnes more scope. And then we had San Andreas. The game of all games. The multiple record breaker. In six or seven years, could we see GTA: San Andreas freely available to download from Rockstar Classics? We'll have to wait and see...

Download: Grand Theft Auto 2 (350MB)

Cont...

In its twenty year history Reflections has created a number of break-out hits, including the Destruction Derby titles for the PlayStation, famous Amiga action title Shadow of the Beast, and, of course, the Driver series, whose success led Atari to acquire the studio in 1998.

The most recent title in the Driver series, Driv3r, was Atari's biggest commercial hope for this year, but the game launched to hugely polarised critical reaction - ultimately leading to allegations from some quarters that the firm had offered bribes or marketing deals in return from high review scores from certain publications.

"GTA2 was the final game in the series to be 2D for the PlayStation and PC"
but it was on the dreamcast- don't forget the dreamcast

It won't download, I've tried and so have a few of my mates. Get cannot find server error when you submit the registration info.
#2.1 cappuchok on 22 Dec 2004 - 13:11
Same here. There's something wrong with their server. Maybe they got slashdotted or something.

EDIT: It seems they use an IP address in their form. I changed that IP to www.rockstargames.com, then at least I got some response, an error message about undefined variables (some stuff that's not being defined in the form to begin with, like "secondary_address" and "pw" ).
Then at least I got to an EULA screen (manually, after looking through the error messages) and pressed OK, then behold - more error messages, about a missing file (GTA2INSTALLER.ZIP) this time. Looks like these guys aren't quite up to scratch on PHP programming. Or they just haven't uploaded the file yet. Who knows.

not only download! read the text also on the page

"Due to overwhelming response, we have had to limit the number of concurrent connections to our download server. If you receive an error page, please try again later."
#2.3 tcghost on 22 Dec 2004 - 14:33
just add "&secondary_address=&pw=" to the end of your url...

but they moved the download to another server and there's no way to get it until the server is back up

#6 Kamael on 22 Dec 2004 - 13:34

#7 Mx² on 22 Dec 2004 - 13:55
Come on Rockstar, bring the site back up!
(2 replies) #8 Rogue` on 22 Dec 2004 - 13:58
I hope 3dgamers release a .torrent for it
#8.1 cappuchok on 22 Dec 2004 - 14:06
Not likely. Rockstar says mirroring the file is not allowed.
#8.2 Mx² on 22 Dec 2004 - 14:15
Yea they probs won't allow mirroring. But if they got the site fixed, then we would be able to download the game
#9 nw_raptor on 22 Dec 2004 - 15:06
nice!
(1 reply) #10 moeburn on 22 Dec 2004 - 15:16
Unfortunately, it still won't work on NT 5.1.
#10.1 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 15:54
I had some problems with it in Windows 2000, but a patch fixed it.
Patch 1.3 (I think) fixed it, but GTA was patched and done when it got free.
Don't know about this one. Trying to download it.... there's no way that they are going to get any information from me.
#11 vetcashman on 22 Dec 2004 - 16:47
I think its good of rockstar to have done this, most companies wouldn't think about taking time to remake and release a game that was loved by so many
#12 clotz2000 on 22 Dec 2004 - 16:57
Yeah this definitely rocks!! Rockstar stands out among developer's, even bigger companies like Nintendo won't even offer Super Mario Bros for free. I guess they intend on re-making every NES game and milk each game for all it's worth for the Gameboy Advance instead of making it's old school fans happy. I think more companies should offer their old games for download, Like Doom, Duke Nukem, Etc. These games are classics and it would be awesome of the companies to release them.

Well that's just my opinion, and yes I still love Nintendo
#13 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 17:03
It's silly that 3D Realms released the source code under GPL, but you still have to buy the game to be able to play it.

There are Windows ports, but you still need the big GRP file.
#14 JorgeIváη™ on 22 Dec 2004 - 17:05
direct link?
#15 yert* on 22 Dec 2004 - 17:10
I hate this game! It sucks! Not that anyone cares
#16 mipra on 22 Dec 2004 - 17:38
the site is still down. anyone has direct link?
#17 Mx² on 22 Dec 2004 - 19:45
I want to download my GTA2
(3 replies) #18 take_the_veil on 22 Dec 2004 - 20:08
Why didnt they torrent it. Stupid fools.

Edit: Cos they want info from you. My bad.
#18.1 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 20:18
What are they going to do with all that personal information?
It seems pretty useless.
A vast majority will be fake anyway.
#18.2 AnalogRival on 22 Dec 2004 - 23:40
It signs you up on their mailing list, read the whole page.
#18.3 Kushan on 23 Dec 2004 - 23:09
They could do a registration torrent thing, like some BT sites where you gotta register, give them your IP or you can't download...

That would just make sense though.
#19 Evolution on 22 Dec 2004 - 20:19
Finally, they released the real game I personally prefer GTA 2 to GTA 1
(6 replies) #20 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 20:38
Where do I download it?!
Their stupid server is down.

Does anyone have it yet?
#20.1 Evolution on 22 Dec 2004 - 20:53
...it's illegal to download it anywhere else.
#20.2 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 20:55
I was asking if anyone have it.
I can't download it, I want to know if anyone got it or if the server have been down all the time.
Maybe the server IP/address is wrong or something... maybe someone can point me to the right address. :|
#20.3 Evolution on 22 Dec 2004 - 21:00
You were asking where to download it from...that's the only address....
#20.4 Xen on 22 Dec 2004 - 21:15
*Cough* EMULE *cough*
#20.5 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 21:17
uhm, you are slow or something?!
What if the address to the server that you submit your information to, is wrong? That's what I'm asking.
If someone got their hands on it earlier maybe they can tell if it's still the same address.
#20.6 Radium on 22 Dec 2004 - 21:30
eMule? I don't think that there are enough people that share this version of GTA2.
This version is even newer than the retail version with the latest patch.
#21 Xen on 22 Dec 2004 - 21:01
Mx2, stop the btching . Yeh, server is down so let me btch.

BRING THE SITE BACK UP!
#22 paulhaskew on 22 Dec 2004 - 23:48

er...they ain't gonna do that any time soon.
#36.1 DeepThought on 25 Dec 2004 - 02:08
Oh, like they're selling so many copies of it...
#36.2 Jon on 25 Dec 2004 - 11:23
I don't see why they wouldn't release it. It's certainly becoming an increasingly popular trend, publishers releasing source code to allow the community to produce further mods and enhancements, whilst new users still need to buy a copy of the game. It happens a lot in the flight sim world, its a wonderful thing to do with an older sim that isn't selling any more, make the source public and let us rip on it.
(1 reply) #37 ^_^ Silly Willy on 24 Dec 2004 - 18:45
Very cool that the company itself releases the game for free.
#37.1 Alpha2004 on 24 Dec 2004 - 21:27
technically, nothing has been released yet...
#38 AnalogRival on 24 Dec 2004 - 23:14
Has anyone been able to download it? Only answer if you HAVE.
#39 Jooely on 25 Dec 2004 - 07:07
Cool I remember playing the first GTA on demo on the ps before it came out and I knew it had potential. Plus this is a great example of how far technology has come, I can't imagine what the newest GTA game will look like in 7-8 years time.

Please try back another time.

But you still can't download it :/
#42.1 477!14 on 27 Dec 2004 - 23:24
If im mistaken wouldnt that be a lie since nobody has been able to download it, constituting a low volume of downloads... Unless there are people that have been able to download it so far?
#43 dannymp3 on 28 Dec 2004 - 01:28
I'm sure theres someone who's been able to download it.
