Sony's PSP production line continues to be hit by component shortages.

Reports this morning indicate that Sony's PlayStation Portable will not launch in Europe until the second quarter of the year, with chip shortages blamed for this fresh delay to the system's arrival.

A spokesperson for the company told Bloomberg this morning that the device is now expected to ship in Europe in the first half of the year - the first time that Sony has ever indicated that it will arrive outside of the first quarter.

Speaking with the news service, Sony's Kenichi Fukunaga admitted that the firm cannot manufacture enough of the devices to satisfy demand in all three major markets - which has pushed the schedule for the European launch back.

The news came only hours after Sony confirmed that the PSP would launch in the United States on March 24th at a price point of $249.99, with around a million units of hardware expected to be made available in the launch period.

While the number of official WCG games remains the same, two titles from 2004, Unreal Tournament 2004 and Project Gotham Racing 2 were replaced with a Real Time Strategy (RTS) PC game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War (aka Warhammer 40K) and a console-based action game, Dead or Alive Ultimate. Dead or Alive Ultimate is the first action title selected as an official WCG game.

Warhammer 40K, which first joins the list of official games this year, was first launched in the United States last September as a next generation RTS game expected to follow in the footsteps of the popular PC game Starcraft. Gaming industry webzine Gamespy (www.gamespy.com) selected Warhammer 40k as one of the top 10 PC games for 2004.

Dead or Alive Ultimate, a new player in the console arena, is the latest installment in the Dead or Alive series. Since first launching last October, Dead or Alive Ultimate has enjoyed enormous worldwide popularity. The addition of a high caliber action game further diversifies the official WCG game lineup, which was previously comprised of RTS, First Person Shooter (FPS), and sports genres.

The WCGC conducted online surveys of gamers, communities and partners in many countries prior to making title selections. The committee also sought opinions from game experts with an aim to fully reflect preferences of gamers and trends in the world game market. Publishers¡¯ technical support in terms of event operability and fulfillment of sports spirit were also among the factors taken in to consideration.

#2.1 eilegz on 07 Feb 2005 - 01:23
if u think that europe get screwed by gaming bigwigs you should look at latin america everything cost more example:

DS at USA cost 150 + tax
DS at here Panama cost 209 + tax

We pay €189.95 euros for a DS. That's arround $248 USD so quit complaining!!!

So a $249 USD PSP will set us back €249,- euros. ( that's $326 USD )

Conclusion... hey europe doesn't like handhelds.. we only sold three PSPs... duh

QUOTE
The Sony PSP will be made available through retail outlets in North America on March 24, 2005.........
Sony Computer Entertainment Europe sent out an identical release, but then later updated it to push back that region's launch date to "in the Spring." Our sources tell us that Sony plans to ship the system to the U.K. and Europe in late April or early May, and that the cause for the delay is simply so they'll be able to ship enough units to North America during March.

This is wat I heard. Hopefully Sony themselves will come out n say sumthin official soon.

WE NEED TO KNOW!!!!

Yeah its like the Xbox they arent making money from the sale of PSP's, Games accrue money and dev, But its much more of a Dethroning process trying to squish Nintendo and be the No.1 Handheld console company.

No kidding. But from the sounds of things, I don't think they will. Psh...tell your consumers to "adapt" to what amounts to a defect? Please...

i think this is quite clever...manufacturers are always competing to get there product out at the right time. First. This time, ninetendo got a massive headstart in a market they pretty much own already. People trust ninty with handhelds and the DS is a killer. Sony are wise to extend the launch date in the eu for a few months, let the hype surrounding DS and its double screen die down a little and in the meantime inprove the software.
