Xbox 2 will release 'in late October, early November'

While internet news sources today have reported that Microsoft is readying to launch its next generation Xbox hardware in America and Europe in the fourth quarter of this year, Eurogamer has learnt that the specific timing for the machine's roll-out is late October or early November, and merely weeks after the US launch. The exact date is yet to be solidified.

Speaking under conditions of strict anonymity, senior American and British development, publishing and retail sources have confirmed the launch window in the past weeks.

It is also now widely known among British sources that Microsoft UK is currently in the planning stages of a spectacular and unprecedented launch event in central London for the winter release.

While it has been accepted for some time that Xbox 2, currently codenamed Xenon, would be released in America before the end of the year, the news of a late October/early November launch in both the UK and Europe will send shockwaves through the industry and gaming community on this side of the Atlantic.

Many have expressed concern that Microsoft is forcing the next generation of console hardware too early, and that the current generation still has much to achieve. The most famous example of this came from then Nintendo of Europe MD David Gosen speaking at an ELSPA summit in London last October, where he lambasted Microsoft for pushing a next generation machine to market in 2005, and even went so far as to question Microsoft's motivation as profit.

Neowin spoke to LokiTorrent's owner, Lowkee, a few weeks ago, as the legal battle was just getting underway. "I run a completely legal website that the MPAA or anyone else has no right to force me to close," he said. "In just the past few weeks, the MPAA has forced the shutdown of many other BitTorrent sites which were set up to do nothing more than allow people to share what they wished. It will be a dark day when we roll over to let organizations such as the RIAA and MPAA make our freedom of speech laws for us.

"Piracy is a byproduct of peer sharing," he added. When peer-to-peer software is being written, there aren't 10 developers wringing their hands together over how much software and music people can steal from those who make a living selling it. Peer sharing is used to allow people who don't have the financial funding of the MPAA and RIAA to share their works, for free, to a worldwide audience without the massive costs of bandwidth punishing them for being popular."

Remember, for all its faults (including the odd lawsuit against 12-year-olds, or dead people), the Recording Industry Association of America did do one thing differently. It waited until there was a mainstream, easily-available and legal alternative to the P2P networks before it launched its legal actions. Napster, iTunes and all have taken off - they may not yet have the same volume of downloads as services like Kazaa did in their hey-day, but it's growing all the time, and surely it won't be that much longer until legal music downloads actually do take over.

The movie business, however, is nowhere near this level. Napster has mentioned it plans to get into it at some point in the future, but no dates have been mentioned yet. There are a few services up and running now, but many of them are (once again) American-only - and others have a small selection of films that most of us have never heard of. Hardly that great of an incentive when a quick search will yield the latest blockbuster, watchable within just a few hours. Link up your computer to your TV and a decent surround sound system, and it's pretty much impossible to tell it apart from the real thing.

I have no doubt legal movie downloads - whether they're pay-per-view, download and keep, or a 24-hour "licence" to watch (pretty much like getting a movie out of Blockbuster or somewhere else at the moment) will come. However, it seems that it's still quite a long way off. More and more people have broadband, more and more people are wanting to use it to its full potential. More and more people are discovered the wonders of downloading films quickly and easily; until there are some viable, legal alternatives, the MPAA is facing an uphill struggle in shutting down BitTorrent trackers.

Great news if they can make the next jump in consoles, but I hope they don't push the xbox2 out too early. Can't wait for this

" even went so far as to question Microsoft's motivation as profit. " ??? And I suppose Nintendo thinks it is doing charity worK? I love how David Gosen bashed MS for wanting to get a jumpstart with Xbox 2 when Nintendo shoved the DS out the door so early into the GBA's lifespan.
#2.1 eilegz on 13 Feb 2005 - 18:19
well the DS its different than GBA and nintendo stated it already now if u wonder will xbox 2 bring something new other than better graphics and more powerhouse
#2.2 denzilla on 13 Feb 2005 - 18:38
The DS is nothing more than a knee jerk reaction to the PSP. Funny thing is that the Big N didn't need a new portable when the Game Gear, NEC Turbo Express and Atari Lynx were around. The original Gameboy made it over a decade with nary a battle scar.

#2.3 eilegz on 13 Feb 2005 - 19:07
maybe its true but we all know that sony will win anyways besides competition its good bring new stuff. The next GB will beat psp for sure
#2.4 Cai on 13 Feb 2005 - 20:29
I wouldnt just say that yet.
#2.5 Zelpus on 14 Feb 2005 - 02:27
Turbo Express was way ahead of its time, its a shame.
#2.6 Jeebus McChrist on 14 Feb 2005 - 07:58
Denzilla, the DS was in development before the PSP. The PSP and DS "wars" are never going to happen, because Sony's customer service sucks and, what with the massive array of "physical glitches" the PSP had with it's launch in Japan, this isn't too great.

The DS actually sold well, and is not designed to be another Game Boy. Though handheld, have you EVER seen "Nintendo Game Boy DS"? Didn't think so. It's the "Nintendo DS", a whole new system. It's pretty innovative, coming up with new ways to play games rather than keeping to the old "SCREEN + CONTROLLER = NORMAL LOLO" way of consoles.

Graphics don't make a game a game, and if they do, it's called an animated movie. Nor do an MP3 & UMD player make a console. We all saw what happened to the poor N-Gage. If I wanted an MP3 player or to watch portable movies, I'd get an MP3 player and a portable DVD player. Sure it might cost more, but at least then it won't SUCK.
#2.7 shao on 14 Feb 2005 - 16:49
generally i'd say that hardware wouldn't matter to portable gaming systems. but the comparisons between the original gameboy vs game gear, lynx were as much about the colour devices having godawful battery life, as much as NOT having any killer apps (tetris). the nec turbo express also had abismal battery life, and the device was huge, but it had some amazing processing power with some amazing games, for the time.

tbh, i don't see either the psp or ds having any real killer apps (other than the usual re-workings of zelda / pokémon combinations on the ds). however the psp, at least for the older market, does have more of a wow factor despite all the bad press / high price point, and not many great launch games, but despite that people WILL buy it.

You can't Telnet, phone and browse web with your portable DVD Player
I've got an original N-Gage, and I think it rocks. I don't give a damn about people who're saying "HA! Now that's a sucky phone!"... I love it. And nothing else matters

anyway i am all up for the fast release, all the better for me.

IMO, xbox 1 sill has another year of life in it

though i guess if it comes down to being Xbox 2 vs. PS 2 for a little while, theres an obvious winner
#4.1 SkaterAustin on 13 Feb 2005 - 14:44
I guess far that is true until the ps3 comes out....
#4.2 BigBoy on 13 Feb 2005 - 15:07
We'll see... next gen will be won by software not hardware IMHO... bot consoles will be incredibly powerful, I don't hink that is what is going to give them an edge.
#4.3 shao on 14 Feb 2005 - 16:52
i'd agree that the xbox has another life in it.. you only have to look at great games like halo, fable, the new oddworld game... to see games that not only look far ahead of anything remotely possible on the ps2, but also play like dreams also. the ps2 has looked pretty dated now for a while, although the pstwo looks like an interesting buy.

microsoft need to strengthen their brand.. release an "x1" (mini xbo or something.. make people WANT old tech the way they want a pstwo, make people fall inlove with the tech, the brand, the look, and they'll upgrade to xbox2 without hesitation

Correct me if im wrong, but isnt the pstwo just the same hardware as the ps2 in a smaller, better looking box? What does it matter what your console looks like?

so XB2 can play XB games or what?
#5.1 Xerxes on 14 Feb 2005 - 01:23
From what I understand the answer is no, since "Xbox 2" has completely different architecture to Xbox 1 (as in Xbox was Intel(x86)/Nvidia, Xbox 2 is IBM(PowerPC)/ATi)..however, i could be wrong, I did hear there was some talk about using some version of VirtualPC on Xbox 2 to emulate Xbox 1...bur I haven't heard much since though.

That's my 2 cents.
#5.2 Radium on 14 Feb 2005 - 03:41
Xbox has a modified Pentium III 733MHz and a modified NV25 (GeForce 3) for graphics.
Xbox 2 will have a IBM processor, probably POWER4 (the same used in the Apple's G5), and a ATI graphics processors, R500 or 520.
#5.3 Gobelet on 14 Feb 2005 - 21:19
Microsoft making a PowerPC console? Isn't that ironic

Say hello to the next dreamcast. I regret buying the first xbox now figuring halo, fable, ninja gaiden and knights of the old republic are the only real game for it. I think this is just arrogant on microsoft's part.
#6.1 eilegz on 13 Feb 2005 - 18:24
well i dun think that it will be the next dreamcast because even losing money microsoft will support it and well xbox wasnt a bad console its good to be modded and used like a media player, emulator to other console games.

Anyways my hope its for revolution lets see what happen
#6.2 Post-It Note on 13 Feb 2005 - 18:33
I've used my xbox more for non-gaming than gaming.
#6.3 daveoc64 on 13 Feb 2005 - 22:55
I have had my Xbox for a year and a PS2 for 3 years. I have played on the Xbox more than the PS2.
#6.4 Spartan_X on 14 Feb 2005 - 00:16
and what does the PS2 has? GT (exclusive), GTA (non-exclusive), MGS (non-exclusive), Final Fantasy (semi-exclusive). all the other games are cross platform or way too crapy to even think of buying them. the PS2 has more games but just a few good ones, the GC has a few games but most of them are really good and the Xbox is right in the middle of them but has a great online service... I rather put my money on the Xbox...
#6.5 Xerxes on 14 Feb 2005 - 01:46
I think Xbox 2 will probally do really well (initally), since it will be the only next-gen console available (when it launches) it will most likely mean most people wanting to get a new console or update to the "latest and greatest" will get an Xbox 2 (not like they have any choice anyway )...of cause the Nintendo/Sony fans will wait out for thier respective next-gen systems. Personally I think Xbox 2 is no threat to the PlayStation's title as "top selling console" as the PS already has a massive userbase world wide and Xbox 2 will need tobe something extremely special to get those people to convert..however, the new Nintendo system could tip the scales, with Nintendo been the verterans of the console wars and considing how quite they have been about the new system, I wouldn't count it out the next "war" yet

I'd just like to add I own a Xbox and PS2 and I think they are BOTH great consoles....it's great games that make great console, not great graphics.

Thats my 2 cents.
#7 mikeyj on 13 Feb 2005 - 19:41
I hope this next generation xbox is next generation technology and not just an older version xbox with newer parts and software while performing no better than it's current predecessor.
#8 FightingChance on 13 Feb 2005 - 19:54
Wow, I can't believe it's coming so early.

Right now, I have a PS2, but I'm waiting for the current Xbox to really drop in price, because like jcvortex said there's only about 7 games for it I want to play, and that doesn't justify buying the system.
#9 brent3000 on 13 Feb 2005 - 20:29

I this will be a big blow. The xbox main points were online play and graphics , now I pretty sure xbox 2 wont have the best graphics so there relaying on Xbox live. I feel if sony and nintendo make a solid online service the xbox 2 is going to be in serious trouble.
#10.1 SecretAgentMan on 14 Feb 2005 - 08:00
Microsoft will not release a under powered console. There hardware will be as good and likely even be better than what Sony offers with the PS3.

Any site that uses "learnt" in the opening paragraph of a news story is not a credible source.
#11.1 rIaHc3 on 13 Feb 2005 - 22:00
Why is it wrong........

Remember unprofessional journalism hehe
#11.2 DrIndianaJones on 13 Feb 2005 - 23:17
UK English, my friend.
#11.3 episode on 14 Feb 2005 - 00:12
Learnt is not a word in ANY (proper form of) english. UK or otherwise. It has started sneaking into usage and acceptance, but only because people are stupid. The proper past tense of learn is learned.
#11.4 weenur on 14 Feb 2005 - 01:49
Just because "learnt" isn't used much in US English doesn't mean it's incorrect. So do you suggest we abandon "burnt" or "dreamt", or any other "t" instead of "ed", as well? You may want to take up your "people are stupid" with Webster's as "learnt" is in the unabridged dictionary.

If you want to get picky about grammar, note that your sentence, "UK or otherwise.", is a fragment.
#11.5 episode on 14 Feb 2005 - 02:45
Like I said, those types of words are not proper. They have begun to come into the language, and are in dictionaries. However, they are recently added. If you have the UOED, it has the dates of first introduction. "Learnt" was added in 1997.

Wow, I had a sentence fragment on a message board. Wonderful. My point was that if some stupid games site thinks they are breaking exclusive news, they could use proper words in it. I was not doing anything of the sort. My point was that the site is not credible, I didn't mean to get into a huge stupid fight over the comment.
#11.6 vancity001 on 14 Feb 2005 - 04:57
eposide, you are terribly incorrect.
New words are constantly being added all the time to the english language, does that make them incorrect? Are you stating that every word added to the language since it was first created is incorrect? Because if so, most of the words that me and you use everyday aren't words then. They are just in the dictionary for fun right? I might add, would the site be any more credible if it used shakespearean english? Because by your arguement, thats correct english since its been around so long. Get over it, you were proven wrong. Let's just hope you learnt something.
#11.7 Ava3ar on 14 Feb 2005 - 17:38
proper isn't even a real word fgs

properly
real

use of them if your going to make arguments about the authenticity of a word used in common English

That would kick ass if Halo 3 came out with the debut of Xbox 2
#12.1 Xerxes on 14 Feb 2005 - 11:23
That would certianly kick arse ...but unless you want it looking almost the same as Halo 2 (cause honistly if it was a Xbox 2 launch title it gives Bungie less then 1 year to make it) I think it will probally come out at least 6 months to 1 year or later after Xbox 2 debuts..but here's hoping!
#12.2 Ryster092 on 16 Feb 2005 - 13:03
I heard that they will re-release Halo 2 for Xbox 2 but give it a large expansion and rename it to Halo 2.5. New maps, increased resolution, support for the new version of Xbox live, etc etc.

well its 3 version of xbox so if they want to name one for each one its completely acceptable

it's kind of wierd we haven't seen screenshots or anything from xbox 2... usually when a new system is being made they build up hype with releaseing demo screenshots of the massive capabilities of it... kinda like the original xbox did a year or two before it was released...
#14.1 episode on 14 Feb 2005 - 00:14
All the consoles will be shown at E3 in May.

PS3, Xbox 2, Nintendo Revolution, and the next Game Boy (note to people that have no idea what they are talking about but think they do, the next Game Boy is what is competing with the PSP, not the DS.)
#14.2 Cai on 14 Feb 2005 - 00:24
Well nintendo did release the ds so the psp would have some competition obviously.
#14.3 episode on 14 Feb 2005 - 02:46
No, ass. The DS is a standalone third platform for Nintendo. The Next Game Boy is the competition for the PSP. I can't believe I had to restate that after spelling it out in my last post.
#14.4 iconboy on 14 Feb 2005 - 03:43
dude, relax, all the guy is doing is pointing out that the DS put up some competition against the PSP, regardless of wether or not nintnedo wanted it that way. ontop of that all this "the ds was never meant to compete against the PSP" seems like 'loser talk' to me.
#14.5 Cai on 14 Feb 2005 - 07:55
Lol I dont care what he says I dont care what nintendo says yeah that its 100% fact what he says but still use common sense...we know why the ds was released so sony wouldnt take over the handheld market for for the short period of time in which there was no new gb. Understand I dont mean the made the nintendo
ds to compete spec wise because they could have if they wanted to, they simply made a system to by time..yes and the next gameboy will be better then psp but it will only be a matter of time before the psp 2 is out to compete with that.
#15 cesardrgn on 14 Feb 2005 - 06:25

#16 bbtak on 14 Feb 2005 - 07:01
Xbox2 is way too early for me
Unless it's backward compatible with xbox1 game, I won't be getting it at launch to have it sit there hogging space, I still want to play my xbox1 games.

But depends what games they'll announce with the launch I guess.
#17 SecretAgentMan on 14 Feb 2005 - 08:07
Bring it on Microsoft. This will be a no brainer console purchase.
#18 woffel123 on 14 Feb 2005 - 08:28
So what do u think they should call the next xbox? my vote goes for "neXtBOX"
#19 Mando on 14 Feb 2005 - 09:22
for the record Xbox 1 compatiblity has been dropped.

It is a shrewd move by Microsoft releasing it a full year almost until the scheduled release of the PS3. The aim seems to be snare the console buyers & xbox 1 owners before the next gen of Sony equipment is released.

If this is true then Japan will also get the Xbox2 before the release of PS3, this could be just what XBox needs in Asia (a foothold in this large market by pre-empting the Sony).

Game developers prefer coding for the MS stable as they get the dev utils free and DO NOT pay a licencing levy to MS for releasing titles for it.

Thats the difference between MS & Sony (in consoles). For every Sony PS1&2 game sold a % of it goes to Sony. With Xbox this does not happen. (granted end users probably dont care about this).

Im not knocking Sony (although im not a fan of any of their electronics) and im not a MS fanboy either heheh.

Im just airing my opinion on this matter (and of my mates in the console dev world for various companies).
Ive seen some of the early graphic work involved with the new xbox (my mates senior gfx designer @Viz Interactive) and we are all gonna be gobsmacked with the increase in poly count alone.

TABARNACLE PEEPS, GET YOUR FACT STRAIGHT
This message concern no brainers fanboy

1) The xBox2 (xBox360) will be launch too early. So many games are still currently in dev for the xBox and it's still selling well (both games and consoles), then why would game devr's cared about another console? (Dreamcast anyone?)

2) The DS was in dev BEFORE we heard about the PSP.

3) The playstation generation youth need to die. Good gfx DOES NOT make a game better,... Megaman (Zero) too), Zelda, Metroid, Castlevania are proof, and I'm only talking about their respective GBA version. Look at all the hype about the CV currently in dev for the DS,... It's 2D!

4) Let's face it, even tho the DS wasn't launched to compete over the DS, it's obvious that there is war between the 2 handeld even if BigN saiys the opposite.

ABC and a half!

my 2 cents...

Microsoft will NEVER rule in asia, despite an early release, its not in the cards and Japan loves Sony and/or any of their own Japanese companies.

Sony wont win the handheld war because the handheld war is based SOLELY on kids with little money. Sure you could be over the age of 17 with a GBA, but honestly how old do you have to get before you start think "Multimedia device" like a pda or a laptop instead of the GBA.

Nintento will probably never be #1 in the console industry ever again. Its a sad day, but this is the era of the multi billion dollar corporation, and no matter how big the big N is, to me they will always be the mom and pop shop slowly being squeezed by big business.

and why in the blue hell would people buy a Gamecube if it couldn't play N64 games?

Well ... since PS2 plays PS1 u would think that Xbox 2 would play xbox 1 so u save space, money and a tons of wires that makes the place a mess if u have a computer and other gadgets around you. and buddy those are 2 different consoles
#24 robpears on 14 Feb 2005 - 23:24

#25 rajputwarrior on 15 Feb 2005 - 00:25
Consoles always suck when they first come out, look at halo 1 compared to 2, gameplay graphics everything, not to mention when the first gen psx came out they couldn't read the psx games released towards the end of the psx life span to well. I don't know what the rush is, i can't really see graphics getting any better then they are right for for a little bit. If something nicer then hl2 comes out as soon as that console comes out i will be surpirised because that is basically the only reason a new console is coming out. better graphics!
