Microsoft is recalling power cords on 14.1 million Xbox consoles worldwide, following reports of injuries due to defective electric components.

The company announced the recall on Thursday, saying it is aimed at protecting the consoles from electrical component failures that can pose a fire hazard. So far such failures have been reported in 30 consoles worldwide, causing minor injury or property damage, Microsoft said. Seven customers reported burn to their hands.

In rest of the cases, the defect caused smoke damage or minor damage to a carpet or entertainment center. The recall covers Xbox consoles manufactured before Oct. 23, 2003 in all regions except continental Europe. In Europe, consoles made before Jan. 13, 2004, will need a replacement cord, the company said.

Well, you do need one if they say you do as even though you haven't had a problem, you might there's an (albeit small) chance that you will later. To be fair, M$ are only being safer then sorry - it's probably cheaper for them to provide this service then be sued by all the people that have problems with it in the future.

There have only been 30 cases WORLDWIDE though. It's pretty unlikely that most of us will be affected.

People have been saying there is no problem with them it's just another way for m$ to track were all the Xbox’s are. I think that’s a stupid rumor though.
#11.1 vetcashman on 17 Feb 2005 - 17:19
an expensive way of tracking where the XBox's are

that is the most expensive way to track something ever!!!!!!

I live in Canada and I'm not able to choose which country to choose on the site...

Update: nevermind, it's because I clicked on the link from here which directed me to the US site.

I've heard a few reports of this happening (including one on neowin). This recall really doesn't surprise me, except for the fact they actually did it and not just claimed there was nothing wrong.
#14 oddcrap on 17 Feb 2005 - 21:02
Not affected.
#15 BiGdUsTy on 17 Feb 2005 - 22:18
I'll be getting one, maybe they fixed the arcing i get every time i plug the cord into the xbox. I've never been shocked by it though it's just annoying.

m,y mom scared me, she was telling me it was nintendo that was doing the recall on the gamecube (heard the radio wrong).

i'll be sure to tell all my friends who own x-box.
#16.1 kravex on 18 Feb 2005 - 14:26
You'll have to leave the Special Unit at your school and go up to the Advanced Unit to tell them

(I assume your still at school due to the fact that your 'mom' can still scare you...)

#16.2 Dale on 18 Feb 2005 - 14:45
nah, she was crazy. she made it sound like it was the whole gamecube that was recalled. i don't wanna give it up. thats all.
#17 TruBD on 18 Feb 2005 - 03:56

god ms do something for free and everyone goes crazy, ms are just doing what they have to do by law, and also because its easyer for them to do this then to get sued by everyone.
