Director Peter Jackson is suing New Line Cinema for a greater share of the licensing profits from the first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, in a suit which cites a failure to pay for script and song lyric use in a licensed EA videogame.

The visionary director of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy names the EA videogame as one of the most important of 19 financial quibbles covered by the lawsuit, but doesn't specify exactly which of EA's games is the problem. EA has produced several, including games directly based on The Two Towers and Return of the King as well as spin-off RPG The Third Age; however only Vivendi's Fellowship of the Ring title, based on the books rather than the film, dealt with the first story.

Jackson, along with his partner Fran Walsh and their company Wingnut Films, listed the gaming grievance prominently amongst the various allegations. New Line has declined to discuss them, but Wingnut lawyer Peter Nelson said the company had "attempted to resolve our differences... through the normal auditing process. That has proven unsatisfactory so far."

Jackson is currently working on a remake of King Kong, which Ubisoft has signed on to turn into a videogame.

Features of the game include:

  • Freely transform between mech and jet at the push of a button.
  • Tool up with an extensive armory of devastating weaponry.
  • Customize your arsenal before each mission.
  • Fight hordes of enemies through 14 challenging missions.
  • Engage in spectacular battles in a variety of breathtaking environments.
  • Leave your mark on the world as the “persistent damage system” records every bit of destruction.
  • Assist your allied forces as they take their last stand.
  • Experience one of the first games to use CG, allowing for movie-quality, eye-catching special effects.

lol...I'm sorry that just made me laugh.

As far as the games, I thought they were pretty good except for the controls, which were kinda bad.

As much as anything its enforcing the copyright... If you've said you'll sue people that break copyright in such ways, afaik you pretty much have to...

... and if you were rich, you wouldn't try to get more rich?
Come on, it's not the way Jackson thinks, it's the way most humans think.

You see the thing is that we people down here in little old New Zealand aren't used to having lots of money, so once we get a taste we want MORE!

hmmmm money

There is nothing wrong with taking care of business, no matter how rich you are. Rich people like Jackson are rich for a reason. They deserve every penny and anyone who says otherwise probably believes it is "unfair" that rich people have money while they don't.

I'll be much happier if P.J. gets more rich instead of EA

all that money and he still can't get a decent haircut!

Exactly. If you don't persue those who break your copyright, you lose your copyright (right?).

??? huh its a lisensed game, eg the makers of the film would have given them rights to use anything from the film.. I don't understand

they got the license from New Line (NL) but the problem is that NL give them access to some stuff not covered by original license between Jackson and NL; sort of "jackson say they can use the digital locations but they don't have access to the music", NL comes in and says to EA "you can use the locations and the music". see where the problems is?

So who did the copyright violation? if its EA , BURN THEM!
#5.1 virtorio on 07 Mar 2005 - 04:24
New Line did.

The way I understand it, New Line gave EA permission to use material which they had no right to give.

Bah, the original RPGs of FOTR and TT were way better than the 3D crap they released recently.

This is redicoulous, without J.R. Tolkien, Jackson would never have had the ability to create LOTR. I hope most of the money gained in the suit will go to his estate.
#8.1 ABC½ on 07 Mar 2005 - 15:58
Tolkien never composed or written any song for LOTR. This is only concerning lyrics and songs.

As for the script, PJ has the right on HIS MOVIE SCRIPT, wich is very different from the actual LOTR book series.

ABC and a half!

#10 forster on 07 Mar 2005 - 12:12
Yeah man, you sue for more money - you're family must be starving with the breadcrumbs of money you made from LOTR.

Makes me sick - donate some money to charity you scumbag.
#11 majortom1981 on 07 Mar 2005 - 13:03
I think peter jackson is right to sue. HE worked his but off for a long time on these films. He deserves every penny he gets.

Try working in a location on 3 movies for 3 years(I thin kit took them 3 years) .
