The folks over at Blizzard are releasing the first major content patch for their hugely successful MMORPG World of WarCraft. Two new test realms are to go live for the new content to be tested by randomly selected players. The patch changes and addition is also quite extensive, adding a new dungeon, two new raid bosses and a variety of interface changes and bug fixes.

News source: World of Warcraft Website

Two new public test realms will be going live soon! These realms will give select players the chance to experience new content before it is patched to public realms. More importantly, it gives us a place to test new features and systems in a live environment without impacting the public realms. This will allow us to provide players with more frequent content patches in the future.

Moving forward, all players who have an active World of Warcraft account will be eligible to participate in testing on the test realms. However, this initial testing phase requires characters between the levels of 55 and 60 in order to properly test the content and functionality for the next patch. Email invitations have been sent out to a random set of players who meet these qualifications. Their level 55 to 60 characters have been copied to the test realm and will be waiting for them when they log in for the first time.

The version of World of Warcraft currently running on the test realms contains all the content additions, changes, and bug fixes that will be implemented to the public realms next patch. If you would like to read the details of these changes, additions, and bug fixes, please read the patch notes located here.

The goal of the public test realms is to facilitate the introduction of any game changes to a live environment. This will allow us to test, analyze, and present new content to players on a regular basis with the shortest delay possible. If you would like more information, please view our Test Realm FAQ located here. We want to thank all of the players who have been selected to test this new content, and we look forward to seeing you in game!

Awesome, you can't complain about new content.
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by Sage_Override on 08 Mar 2005 - 14:36
No? UO screwed up and they released all new content, in effect, trashing the good old design they had in the first place. New content can mean new problems and a worse format, not necessarily good things.

Holy Crap! What a lot of changes... They should republish the manual for this one! No use sending newbies home with the old one.

new test realms my ass... why not fix the existing ones first.
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by Bant on 08 Mar 2005 - 20:24
new test realms are for massively testing the new changes so they can patch more frequently.

fixing the existing ones is impacted very little by this addition.

Hear hear

But it's just as simple as this game isn't for everyone.
Personally, the grind is far too great for me in this one.
Quote this comment #9.2 Posted by episode on 09 Mar 2005 - 02:40
You are doing something wrong if you think this game is a grind. It is far, far too easy to level in WoW.

Hmm..both WOW and EQ2 were released at the same time. Right now EQ2 has had 5, yes FIVE HUGE updates that have added almost 1000 new quests, around 20 new dungeons and the list could go on and on. To top it all off on March 21st their first expansion is coming out.

So, I ask, what the hell is taking blizzard so long with their updates? They are adding 1 dungeon? What a joke...I was interested in the game until I read that they have not had one content update yet...kind of sad, and i know I will be staying away from this game like the plague

How can you even compare EverQuest 2 and World of Warcraft? The Everquest series is somewhat ... well, lacking a lot of ways compared to WoW. If you have ever played WoW you'll know what I mean.
Quote this comment #10.2 Posted by Inplode on 08 Mar 2005 - 14:18
that and also blizzard is still recovering from the 600,000 PLUS people that joined in 2 days

EQ is a slave to lame gamers. EQ sucks, although they created the 3d MMORPG craze, EQ still sucks.

Thanks Sage for filling in the troll position

EQ2 deffinatly has the upper hand on WoW when it comes to updating itself. I see WoW loosing its player base around summer because of a lack of things to do. When's that battlegrounds thing coming out thats been advertised since ~Christmas? My bet is on late May
Quote this comment #10.5 Posted by ripthisjoint on 08 Mar 2005 - 16:43
I wasnt talking about WOW VS Eq2 in gameplay, I was talking about content updates. If you go over to EQ2players.com and check out their lates big update you would be shocked that all this was done in THREE WEEKS. Why is it that WOW has not had one content update, for a game that has that many players? It is just sad, and the people who are playing WOW should be furious.

Quote this comment #10.6 Posted by Lexcyn on 08 Mar 2005 - 17:03
Like someone had said earlier, I think they're trying to balance the load created by the hundreds of thousands of people who have been signing up and flooding the servers. Remember that keeping the game online is their top priority, while contect upgrades and patches are second. In time I bet we will see vast improvements and add-ons to this game.
Quote this comment #10.7 Posted by quintesse on 08 Mar 2005 - 17:39
Why should I be furious? Maybe the people who are somehow able to run through every quest in the game in record time but there's still enough of the WoW world I haven't seen :-)
Quote this comment #10.8 Posted by HawkMan on 08 Mar 2005 - 20:26
You know Lexcyn, I did play WoW. and if Wow had had a simultanius Euro and US release like EQ, I would be playing WoW today and not EQ2.

and EQ2 is in NO way behind WoW in gameplay, in fact the games have almost exactly the same gameplay, both very quest driven, and everythgin done basically the same btu in different enviroments, BEing that EQ2 has a prettier enviroment, more classes with MUCH more character customizations so I can barely see 2 characters thatlook alike.

and while WoW is Easy from lvl1 to lvl60. EQ2 actually becomes more advanced and more difficult as you level and gives you a challenge unlike WoW.

The only reason to buy WoW is if you're desperate for PvP, but I'm more interested in the Roleplay Servers than PVP servers(btw I didn't see any Roleplay servers when i played WoW....
So if you're desperate for PvP, then get PvP, if you want a fantasy enfiroment you can truly live in, with pther peopel that actually roleplay and don't just "play", then EQ2 is the better choice.

Neither game can compare to the monthly updates for Asheron's Call.
Quote this comment #10.10 Posted by Dirtie on 08 Mar 2005 - 21:32
It's the quality of the new/upgraded content, not the quantity.
Quote this comment #10.11 Posted by icdover on 08 Mar 2005 - 21:55
Dirtie, it would seem that your suggesting that EQ2's updates are of bad quality... which they arn't at all. Im deffinatly not pushing aside the issues that WoW has with their servers (which by god they need to resolve), but its just sad that they still have the level of problems they did when i started playing at christmas. I have an active account with both EQ2 and WoW so im not just making stuff up.
Quote this comment #10.12 Posted by threedaysdwn on 09 Mar 2005 - 02:01
Yeah... this doesn't come close to what a "major update" would be in AC or AC2 terms. Not to rag on WoW, I think it's a fine game. Although I've yet to find a game I like as much as the AC games. Can't wait for the expansions coming in early May.

I'm an EQ2 player and I have to say I am very impressed with the quality of the EQ2 development team and the platform they have come up with.

I remember playing EQ1 and changes came in like a snail on valium because the technical design was so obviously slapped together- the success of EQ1 took them by surprise and it just wasn't built to accomodate the ever increasing numbers of users or changes demanded by them. EQ2 seems to be reaping the rewards of having a very modular design that is demonstrably expandable with new content and features.

Like this week a new function went up allowing you to "mentor" younger players, effectively eliminating the barrier of not being able to group with friends just joining up to EQ2. I only first read they were working on this 2 WEEKS AGO, and now it is already in!

AMAZING!

I'd like to try this game, but aside from my fundamental objection to paying both to acquire software and then again to play it (one or the other only seems reasonable), I just don't get enough gaming time to get value from a subscription - I doubt that at $5 per hour after purchasing the game, I'd ever feel that i was worthwhile. It's a shame that those of us who have work, families and such are neglected in this genre of games. If there were a reasonable hourly rate offered, then I'd probably pick up this game, but as it is, I have something of a stereotyped image of the people that could get value out of this - does anyone else remember the episode of Ren & Stimpy on the Galapagos Islands? The Albino Cave Ren somewhat first the picture in my mind, add junk food and one of those plastic "internet toilet" things so that you can pee yourself without fear of staining your pants, because you can't possibly tear yourself away from the computer for 60 seconds (no offense meant to any players of this game, I already acknowledged that it's a stereotype )
Quote this comment #12.1 Posted by nic on 08 Mar 2005 - 18:03
I know what you mean. I don't have a family but between school and work my game time is limited (and it usually cuts into my homework time). For the most part, I just play on the weekends and it really is just cutting into my other recreational activities (for instance I don't think I've even seen a movie since I got the game back in January).

Still, the amount of game time I've put in (it tells you, how scary is that!) makes the subscription worth while. At my current play time I'm spending about $2.67 an hour (it will probably be quite a bit less because I'm factoring in that I've already been charged for this month but haven't had any time to play this month). So if you play half as much as I do, it would be about $5 an hour.

My sister and her family are really into EQ2. Like, the entire family plays! Kinda spooky to go over there and hear them talking back and forth on head sets. I guess you can call that family time... better then ignoring each other with glossy eyes staring at the tube all evening I suppose.

If $5/hour is too high for you, I supposed you don't go to see movies, concert or play... which all cost $5 per hour or more !!!

lmao... you're comparing playing a game for an hour to going to a concert or a movie? A game doesn't even come close to offering the level of entertainment offered by them.

Quote this comment #14.2 Posted by clonk on 09 Mar 2005 - 09:40
If you think the change really qualifies as a 'second life' like Lay on Hands can be for a Paladin, then you do not understand Reincarnation. If you did you would understand why it would have little impact on PVP.

I've played well over 20 days of the game.. not crashed once....
