The Nintendo DS got off to a flying start last weekend in the UK, becoming the fastest-selling console ever with sales topping some 87,000 units in the first two days at retail, according to Chart-Track data released this morning.

Compared to previous console sales over the years, the DS was well ahead of the original GBA's launch statistics, which managed 67,000 back in June 2001, while the remodelled GBA SP debuted with 47,000 in March 2003.

The cheap and cheerful DS even smashed sales of fully-fledged consoles, beating the Cube's record debut week of 69,000 back in May 2002, with the likes of Xbox (52,000) and PS2 (46,000) selling decent numbers despite £299 price points.

Software wise, the DS launched with an impressive 16 titles, 12 of which made this week's Top 40 All Formats - although with PS2 titles such as Gran Turismo 4 and Metal Gear Solid 3 ruling the roost at the top of the listings, the best the DS could muster was a No.4 entry with Super Mario 64 DS, closely followed in the Top 10 by Wario Ware Touched! At No.6 and Rayman DS at No.10.

Oooh, Interesting, I think its great Nintendo sold the DS at such a low price, I just wished the PSP would follow suit when it is finally released

Good stuff. I have a feeling PSP is going to destroy those records. Its shipping 1 million for the first shipment... Thats alot of consoles. Most being sold out.

might have the record in uk but still. big deal. the sony psp sold 200,000 in its first day out in japan.
Sony PSP all but sold out in 1st day
#3.1 vetcashman on 15 Mar 2005 - 23:31
There is no competition in first day sales dude, its over a year that it counts, of course, you want any unit to sell as well as possible on the first day
#3.2 shao on 17 Mar 2005 - 13:36
the psp sold out in japan because of poor understanding of the need which massively understocked shops, possibly due to the rumoured manufacturing difficulties sony have been having with the device (high proportion of faulty units?). The sales figures weren't excessively high, and haven't been since then either. Sony needs to get the manufacturing problems and supply network problems sorted quickly before launching over here in europe, probably one of the main reasons the launch was pushed back.

Also Japan has a larg population.

Typo in the title!

I'd just like to make a point that it said the respective consoles sold less, this would seem right but those consoles also sold out on the day and were in very short supply thereafter, so it could be said that selling the most on the first day is dependant on how many of the consoles you ship out, I'm sure both PS2 and Gamecube could have sold even more than that when they came out if they had shipped more.

The Xbox was a later starter if i remember correctly, I'm sure more records will be broken this year and the next if the supply is right

Stop saying that the PSP is gonna smash those records. I don't think you can fairly compare the two. They are two totally different systems, and the focus of the NDS us different from the PSP.
#6.1 Liquid on 16 Mar 2005 - 06:57
Thats not comparing the two, they are both consoles right? So if it beats the records it is "smashing" those records...

Hardly. They are both portable video game console systems. Just because they have different features doesn't mean that you can't compare the two. Can you not compare a PC with a Mac as well?

I don't really have much desire for these things. Give me Pocket Nesticle on my pocket pc and I will be occupied while I sit on the crapper.

PSP will die soon, especially with a new CEO at Sony. They will kill the product and try something new.
#8 Stef Nighthawk on 16 Mar 2005 - 07:11
And then one wonders why Europe is always the last to receive new consoles.
Probably because if we got it first the USA or Japan won't be able to "smash" our record (we always beat theirs)

So not to disappoint the USA or Japan they probable put us at the end of the waiting line and give them a head start.

ABC and a half!

Nintendo DS sold 500 000 in four days in Japan.
Nintendo DS sold 500 000 in a week in USA.
Nintendo DS sold 600 000 in Europe in 3 days.
Nintendo DS sold 87 000 in UK in 2 days.

PSP was not able to beat sales in Japan since it only sold 200 000 in first week.
#10.1 Oneill on 16 Mar 2005 - 15:55
Because they only had 200,000 consoles ready for launch..
#10.2 Danrarbc641 on 16 Mar 2005 - 16:05
They had 250,000 or 300,000 on launch. Not 200,000.
#10.3 velocity3k on 16 Mar 2005 - 16:27
They only had 200,000 units, maybe you should look at the facts before pulling numbers out of the air;

http://psp.ign.com/articles/572/572696p1.html

You must also remember that the PSP is outselling the DS in Japan right now;

Double owned! It didn't sell 200,000 the first week, and the shipment wasn't 250,000
#10.5 Oneill on 16 Mar 2005 - 17:18
Grow up you sad act.
#10.6 shao on 17 Mar 2005 - 13:45
it may be outselling other consoles atm, but primarily because there were not enough units to meet the initial demand. lots of hints online about faulty units, manufacturing problems, lack of units at retail, poor battery life, pushed back release dates, poor launch day software, bad os, and costly movie titles... it can't get much worse for psp imho..

here in europe we'll be salivating over gba2 news long before psp even reaches here. bad luck for the big S

Ok seriously, no one cares about what goes on in the UK! Who cares that DS smashed sales?? This stuff is totally irrelevant!

People should shot up. Customer buys what they like for the reason they want. Higher numbers doesn't mean better product or better profit.

Myself, I got a DS for Mario64 DS. Also for Castlevania DS, Mr Driller, Meteos and other.

ABC and a half!

#16 Tikimotel on 18 Mar 2005 - 16:43
I Like my new DS a lot.
I commute by train and the minigames are quick and fun.
(there should be more puzzle games like tetris, zoo keeper, polarium, mario64 mini-games, "lumines"{ for PSP, i know that})

Wireless chatting in the train is fun too and quiet you won't disturb the other passengers unlike some people using their cellphones.

I'm glad I got me DS. I reviewed it at my site

http://www.mark-buxton.co.uk/nuke/modules....ile=nintendo_ds

Hope you enjoy the review. I got my DS because the battery life is a lot longer than the PSP and it's cheap to.
