Swedish company Meqon, the firm behind the physics for 3D Realms' Duke Nukem Forever, have rekindled interest in the long-delayed game with a stunning demonstration of its latest physics technology.

In a short but hugely impressive real-time demo, a room is almost completely demolished using a weapon that fires tennis-ball sized projectiles. In the first section of the demo, glass panels shatter realistically and fragile boxes full of objects suspended from the ceiling are smashed, leaving jagged corners hanging on ropes while the contents smash to the floor.

Well, the new version uses Windows Update Agent (WUA) 2.0 in conjunction with its scan results and scanning. If it finds a product which needs a newer version or a new update, it will provide the necessary information about the update and a direct download link. It also will check operating systems and service packs. Windows NT will show up with a red X if it is the operating system used, this is because of the end of support for that operating system. Reports now list the most current updates that are installed and not yet replaced by newer updates.

Baseline Security Analyzer adds support for many new products, with widens the range of support it can give you for your programs and services that need updating. The new version also supports Windows 64-Bit edition and Windows XP Embedded Edition.

Updates with MSBA 2.0 Reporting:

  • Provide a "not yet approved" score for WSUS server administrators
  • Current Update Compliance (history) appears in the report
  • ‘Restart Required’ now shown in report
  • Now offers XML output for all update scanning
    • MBSA 1.2.x had XML only for MBSA-style scans, not /HF scans
  • Elimination of the blue asterisk ‘Note’ message for security updates
  • Locate update packages, KB and bulletin directly
  • Maximum bulletin severity and 3rd party related IDs

Error Messages are now handled in an easier fashion:

  • Many error messages made easily actionable
  • ‘How to correct this’ link in report
    • Opens new guidance in main help file
  • Main help and FAQ work in conjunction with error messages
  • Web site FAQ topic enhanced over time

This new version of Baseline Security Analyzer looks a very strong release. The integration with Windows Update Services is promising and something that I am pleased to think will ease the process of patching a system that needs it.

Another comparison will be with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

Don't forget Unreal3, which aswell as STALKER and misc other games which will be released before or at the same time as duke nukem.

Comparing it to HL2 which is getting on to half a year old is a bit over the top.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #7 Posted by lunamonkey on 27 Apr 2005 - 14:04
why compare DNF with a game that will a year old or more by it's release?

My NEW PC will be better than your old one! Therefore you suck!

There is a reason it's called "Forever" you know...

I love headlines like this.

But heres a notion for the developers of DNF and its physics engine.. HALF LIFE 2 IS OUT. People are playing it and loving it. Stop bigging yourself up and get your bloody product out and let us decide which is better.
Quote this comment #9.1 Posted by shao on 27 Apr 2005 - 15:41
yeah, that's right. because valve weren't "bigging" themselves up the fookin ages before hl2 came out, where they?! not only was the game rubbish, it was overhyped, came with poor multiplayer and an overly obtrusive DRM system which pissed off 10's of 1000's of users.

yeah, valve are perfect!

the only thing which people remember about halflife2, apart from the steam debacle, is the physics, which of course is a third party api, in much the same way a third party api will be used in DNF - understandable then that the companies involved would want to "big up" the technological enhancements the physics would have over an already best selling game.

The majority seems to think HL2 is brilliant.

Valve didn't big themselves up - they missed their projected release date and kept quiet until the actual release (all the hype was generated by the media and websites). Also, the game is far from "rubbish", the multiplayer is far from "poor" and Steam is not an "obtrusive DRM system" but a useful update/management client (although activating games is incredibly annoying).

Still, some people like to just slam everything that is popular to try and be "kewl". Perhaps if you made some interesting observations and backed them up people would take you seriously - just shouting rubbish, jumping up and down and using the term "big up" just results in people people ignoring you.

not neccercerily... can never spell that word. its been recoded from scratch about 8 times now, many years ago it was based on the q2 engine.
and yea comparing it to a game like hl2 is stupid they need to compare it to hl3 or 4 by the time it comes out... if ever.

The thing is that Duke Nukem Forever isn't going to actually ever be released. So they can just continue talking about how their game is going to do everything better than every other best game, ever.

In other words: Duke Nukem Forever is most likely to be a release title for the Phantom, PS8, and XBox 1080(squared).
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #15 Posted by nic on 27 Apr 2005 - 16:28
will you please stop posting news about duke nukem forever.

Until [if] this title is released, I think any news stories on it is just a waist of time.

Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by quick on 27 Apr 2005 - 18:21
It was just a concept demo which was performed live with actual real people in a real room, breaking glass and stuff... It was very realistic.

They still don't have anything yet in computers on the game, in the next 4-50 years they hope they can do it...

DNF was suppose to use the Doom3 engine then the Unreal engine and then some other engine... been like this for years.... No one is looking forward to the nukem game
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by EugeneE3RD on 28 Apr 2005 - 08:46
DNF was originally going to use the Quake 2 engine then 3D Realms switched to the Unreal Engine. Then several months ago, Take-Two said DNF was going to use the Doom3 engine but 3D Realms said that what Take-Two said was false. Now, 3D Realms is claiming that they are using an in-house engine for DNF.

I hate when people post "old news" all the time.

But this news are dated 09/03/2005. they have being posted on the forum over a months ago. and they are about the game which was supposed to come out many many years ago. they keep switching engines every few years.

when i saw this new i was at the least expected a newer article or a video demo.
THIS SHOULD NOT BE IN GAMERS NEWS.
Quote this comment #19.1 Posted by Acid on 27 Apr 2005 - 19:37
Where should it be then? Software news? General? Its about a game, thus it gets put in "Gamer News," genius.
Quote this comment #19.2 Posted by panacea on 27 Apr 2005 - 20:27
Are you really that stupid or just pretending? wow talk about genius.

What I meant was a 2 month old new about a game which is most likely vapourware should not be posted here now. its by far the least newsworthy article i have seeing posted here.

as for the game being vapourware - it has being so far - and there where many news on in during last 6 years. everytime people expected it to be finally done soon - guess what, everytime it just dissapeared until more news surface in a years time.

there is not even a screenshot from the game. the onlu ones are from 6 years ago and do not show anything.

Hey Broussard & 3D Realms, 1997 called and it wants its sequel back! Seriously now, the whole idea of DNF has become cliche. Claiming that the game will have better <insert feature> than <competitor> is more support added to their reputation as vapourware. Maybe they'll suggest Duke will be your beootch - ala Romero?

Just a question for you users, why the hell do you idiots have to argue with each other? At the end of the day, does anyone really care how Duke Nukem Forever is taking "Forever" (HAHA! That's the one trillionth time I've read that! Steal a new pun) or how much Half Life 2 pwnz Doom 3? You know what? I purchased Doom 3 AND Half Life 2. Not only that, I purchased the silver package directly from Valve, not retail through Vivendi. Is Duke 4 taking forever? Yes. However, when or if it does come out, I'm going to buy it, even if it doesn't kill Half Life 3 (thousand) 's graphics. The thing that set Duke 3D apart from graphically revolutionary games like Quake ( Revolutionary as in developed after Mech 2. . ) is that it was fun to play, just like Doom 2 and the original Half Life.

My point is, you're not going to get your fanboi point across to an opposing fanboi, you're only going to end up proving your mutual stupidity.

One thing that I really like about iD, Valve, and Epic is that they don't go around boasting and comparing their technologies against anyone else. They show their product and let the public decide. Yeah, they are in competition with each other, but they don't make stupid comments like this.

I'm so sick of hearing about this ****ing Duke Nukem "game".

Quote this comment Reply to this comment #30 Posted by TripleH on 28 Apr 2005 - 14:22
Why are we arguing about DNF... I remember reading an article back in 99 about top vaporware... and DNF was there because of it being in development for almost 3 years.... that was 99... Just one funny note, with all this hubub about the release date... the response has been because of engine changes and short staffing... How about you guys turn it over to open source community? They'll get it done quicker and pack it full of features, and they'll definetly beat out Quake 4... Well I'm off to start my own game, Return Of Christ... it'll be interesting to see if they can Get DNF out before ROC... Considering my programming skills equate to those of a jelly donut.

OUT!
